While urban settlements are the drivers of the global economy and centres of learning, culture, and innovation and nations rely on competitive dynamic regions for their economic, social, and environmental objectives, urban centres and regions face a myriad of challenges that impact the ways in which people live and work, create wealth, and interact and connect with places. Rapid urbanisation is resulting in urban sprawl, rising emissions, urban poverty and high unemployment rates, housing affordability issues, lack of urban investment, low urban financial and governance capacities, rising inequality and urban crimes, environmental degradation, increasing vulnerability to natural disasters and so forth. At the regional level, low employment, low wage growth, scarce financial resources, climate change, waste and pollution, and rising urban peri-urban competition etc. are impacting the ability of regions to meet socio-economic development goals while protecting biodiversity. The response to these challenges has typically been the application of inadequate or piecemeal solutions, often as a result of fragmented decision-making and competing priorities, with numerous economic, environmental, and social consequences. In response, there is a growing movement towards viewing cities and regions as complex and sociotechnical in nature with people and communities interacting with one another and with objects, such as roads, buildings, transport links etc., within a range of urban and regional settings or contexts. This comprehensive MRW will provide readers with expert interdisciplinary knowledge on how urban centres and regions in locations of varying climates, lifestyles, income levels, and stages development are creating synergies and reducing trade-offs in the development of resilient, resource-efficient, environmentally friendly, liveable, socially equitable, integrated, and technology-enabled centres and regions.

As we navigate an era defined by a pressing need for sustainable resource management, Circular Economy: Navigating the Water-Food Nexus for Sustainable Futures serves as a much-needed guide. The book dives deep into the intertwined relationship between food and water systems in the context of a circular economy, a model that aims for the elimination of waste and the continual use of resources. It starts by defining the landscape of the water-food nexus and the circular economy, painting a comprehensive picture of these two critical concepts and their symbiotic relationship. Further, it delves into the pillars of the water-food nexus, offering insights into sustainable agriculture practices, water conservation, and recycling methods within a circular economy framework. The narrative doesn't stop there; it broadens the scope to embrace emerging technologies and innovations, emphasizing their role in shaping the future of the circular water-food economy. Urban agriculture, a trend gaining momentum in metropolitan landscapes, is discussed as a key player in adopting circular practices. Alongside, it sheds light on investment strategies and partnerships crucial for driving the transition towards a circular economy in the water-food nexus. The book also discusses the policy and regulatory landscape, highlighting the need for sound governance and inclusive policies. Circular Economy: Navigating the Water-Food Nexus for Sustainable Futures concludes with a selection of best practices and forecasts of future trends, outlining possible paths towards a sustainable, circular water-food future. With its exhaustive exploration of the water-food nexus, the book stands as an essential resource for researchers, policymakers, and sustainability advocates seeking to contribute to this critical transition.

Integrating Blue Green Infrastructure Into Urban Development written by Gupta, Shashi Kant and has been published by IGI Global this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-12-05 with Business & Economics categories.
The necessity for innovative solutions is critical in the pursuit of a sustainable future, as the rapidly urbanizing world confronts climate change, biodiversity loss, and public health concerns. The concept of blue and green infrastructure is a game-changing innovation. Blue and green infrastructure provides a solution to urban planning by strategically incorporating natural and engineered aquatic features – blue infrastructure – with vegetation and green spaces – green infrastructure. This approach addresses environmental, social, and economic challenges, and improves water quality, reduces urban heat islands, and mitigates flood risks, enhancing urban resilience. It also fosters biodiversity by establishing habitats for a variety of species and establishing green spaces for human recreation and well-being. Further exploration may help establish blue-green infrastructure as a standard in urban development practices. Integrating Blue-Green Infrastructure Into Urban Development investigates the numerous opportunities that integrated infrastructure offers, including increased biodiversity, improved air and water quality, and enhanced climate resilience. It also addresses obstacles, such as stakeholder coordination, funding constraints, and equitable access to green and aquatic spaces. This book covers topics such as smart technology, energy engineering, and cybersecurity, and is a useful resource for architects, civil engineers, business owners, policymakers, environmentalists, scientists, researchers, and academicians.

Availability of water for domestic and agricultural activities have become crucial due to rapid urbanization, growing population, and climate change. It is essential to develop effective strategies for managing water resources sustainably. These stressors complicate water resources management and pose a major bottleneck in achieving many United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The affected SDGs that relate to these issues are 1) SDG2: zero hunger, 2) SDG6: clean water and sanitation and 3) SDG 13: climate action. To achieve these SDGs, recent advancement in hydrological modelling and water resources management offer promising solutions, including access to safe and affordable drinking water, sanitation, and the protection and restoration of freshwater ecosystems. Thus, the collective goal of this Research Topic is to showcase the latest research and developments in the field of hydrological modelling as well as water resources monitoring and management. It will provide specific focus to how these advances can contribute to the achievement of the UN SDGs related to water resources. In particular, the individual goals of this Research Topic are to contribute knowledge towards: 1) Integrated water resource management. 2) Climate change adaptation. 3) Water quality management. 4) Data driven decision-making through hydrological modelling. 5) Advancement in technologies/tools for water resource management. 6) Engaging stakeholders to promote a holistic approach to water resources management.
