Political parties as organizations are networks of relations defined by interactions among actors based on power, patronage, ideology, and money. In this study, Schwartz (sociology and political science, U. of Illinois at Chicago) uses the Illinois Republicans as a critical case for explaining the complex workings of an American political party. You can go from making a new acquaintance to having a conversation to getting insights to landing a new client, all in the span of one party. But the first rule of networking? Don’t treat it like networking. Not all parties are networking events. As a guest, you’re expected to bring good cheer and a pleasant outlook to the table, while as a host, you’re expected to bring all of the above and some more. How do we navigate the tricky waters of professional and personal? Can you really let your hair down in front of your boss? And how do you authentically connect with people who you will be seeing at work? Luckily, Suhel Seth, professional thrower and goer of parties, has it all figured out and lays it down in simple, easy to follow rules.

The Bell System dominated telecommunications in the United States and Canada for most of the twentieth century, but its monopoly was not inevitable. In the decades around 1900, ordinary citizens—farmers, doctors, small-town entrepreneurs—established tens of thousands of independent telephone systems, stringing their own wires to bring this new technology to the people. Managed by opportunists and idealists alike, these small businesses were motivated not only by profit but also by the promise of open communication as a weapon against monopoly capital and for protection of regional autonomy. As the Bell empire grew, independents fought fiercely to retain control of their local networks and companies—a struggle with an emerging corporate giant that has been almost entirely forgotten. The People's Network reconstructs the story of the telephone's contentious beginnings, exploring the interplay of political economy, business strategy, and social practice in the creation of modern North American telecommunications. Drawing from government documents in the United States and Canada, independent telephone journals and publications, and the archives of regional Bell operating companies and their rivals, Robert MacDougall locates the national debates over the meaning, use, and organization of the telephone industry as a turning point in the history of information networks. The competing businesses represented dueling political philosophies: regional versus national identity and local versus centralized power. Although independent telephone companies did not win their fight with big business, they fundamentally changed the way telecommunications were conceived.

Japanese Telecommunications written by Ruth Taplin and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-02-01 with Social Science categories.

Presenting a comprehensive survey of the telecommunications industry in Japan, Taplin and Wakui cover the different sectors of the industry – including mobile, broadband and satellite, whilst considering key questions such as the structure and economics of the industry, government policy, and international relations issues connected to the industry. The volume brings together unique analysis by renowned experts in the telecommunications field. One major overall problem is that, unlike many other industries, Japan has lagged behind other countries in telecommunications. Japanese Telecommunications considers why this should be so, showing how far this is attributable to an unmodernized industry structure, and assessing the measures being taken to address the problem. After over a decade of struggle, Japan has recorded rapid uptake of broadband, and Japanese advanced mobile services have become increasingly successful on a global scale. Japan has also undergone regulatory reform, and competition policy is now given top priority by government. Taplin and Wakui examine the most recent developments and provide signposts for the future.
