The Army of the Guardians of the Islamic Revolution (Sepah-e Pasdaran-e Enqelab-e Eslami) is more commonly known as Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), or the Pasadran. Sworn by an oath of loyalty to Iran's Supreme Leader, the IRGC is the regime's Praetorian Guard, the custodian of its nuclear program, and now a juggernaut in Iran's economy. Since 1979, the Guards have played a key role in protecting the Revolution internally against domestic opposition while actively seeking to export it abroad. The IRGC has been at the forefront of repression every time ordinary Iranians have protested their lack of freedoms, including after the fraudulent presidential elections of June 2009. Iran's sponsorship of terrorism abroad is also executed through the IRGC's overseas operations' branch, the Qods Forces. In The Pasdaran: Inside Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Emanuele Ottolenghi offers a detailed overview of how the IRGC came into being, how the Guards rose to a position of prominence in Iran's current power structure, how they have penetrated Iran's economy, how they are working to help Iran attain nuclear weapons, and why they will likely play a key role in Iran for decades to come.

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) has evolved well beyond its origins as an ideological guard for the regime. Today, in addition to wielding military force, its influence extends into virtually every corner of Iranian political life and society. Wehrey et al. assess the IRGC less as a traditional military entity and more as a domestic actor, emphasizing the variety of roles it plays in Iran's economy and political culture.

Kian Pourzand is a student at the Technical University of Munich, with clear ideas about his life. His goal is to complete his studies successfully, find a well-paid job, marry his fiancee, and live a good life. Like most students, Kian has to work along with his studies, in order to finance his living. When he finds a job, in which he can not only use his expertise but also work with his countrymen, he feels it is a stroke of luck. He is supposed to supply technical support to his compatriots, who earn their money in different cities of Germany as self-employed merchants. He has to install new PCs, configure their systems, and support them whenever he is called for help. In the first year, it doesn't bother him that he has to travel frequently. But he gets a slap in the face when he realizes that his clients are not just normal merchants, but agents of the Iranian secret service. They are responsible for purchasing military equipment and materials for the nuclear program of the Islamic Republic of Iran. It makes him nearly insane, as he comes to realize that without being aware, he has been a part of the network of the Pasdaran secret service. Can he quit the job and run far away from these false merchants? And where will he go? As he tries to obtain a visa for the United States, his situation gets even worse because the CIA has become aware of him, while they have been observing these Iranian merchants. The CIA offers Kian a deal; he should travel to Iran, as he has already been ordered to do by his Iranian employer, and gather some information for the CIA. When he comes back to Germany, he will be rewarded with a green card for US residency. The novel "Under Pressure from the CIA and the Pasdaran" is an authentic and exciting story set in the empire of a powerful, but corrupt regime; the Islamic Republic of Iran."

Since the turn of the century Iran has experienced three major political upheavals in the struggle to democratize her political systems. The last revolution inaugurated an era of unprecedented turmoil and instead of fulfilling its democratic aim, paved the way for an even more despotic theocracy. To put the revolution in a proper perspective, some attempt is made to explain the reasons for Khomeini’s success in acquiring first, the symbolic leadership of the anti-Shah revolution, and then, the monopolistic control of power in Iran. How and why the other claimants to power were shunted aside and later brutally repressed is a further theme for discussion. The domestic and external ramifications of the revolution are examined in detail; in particular the rise of the anti-American feeling which culminated in the hostage crisis. In conclusion, an analysis is offered of the instrumentalities of power available to the Islamic Republic, and several scenarios are explored in which Iran’s competing forces may converge to determine whether this third revolution will finally succeed in subordinating political authority to popular democratic consent.

Iran is currently experiencing the most important change in its history since the revolution of 1979 and the establishment of the Islamic Republic: The regime in Tehran, traditionally ruled by the Shia clergy, is transforming into a military dictatorship dominated by the officers of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC; Sepah-e Pasdaran-e Enqelab-e Eslami). This transformation is changing not only the economy and society in Iran, but also the Islamic Republic’s relations with the United States and its allies.

This book is a comprehensive analysis of the domestic and foreign politics of Iran, focusing on its complex nature from political, social and cultural perspectives. It has adopted a multidisciplinary approach, combining comparative politics and intellectual and modern history with international relations. It analyses the institutional structure of the Islamic Republic, the main political and social actors and alliances, as well as Iranian opposition forces both inside and outside the country. The book tries to simplify the seemingly intractable complexity of the Islamic Republic by demystifying it and using political science methods to prove that it is a peculiar hybrid regime.
