Originally published in 1922, this work details the history and society of the Upper Thames. The following passage is an extract from its preface: 'The scope of the book is principally nature and life, speech, story, tradition, and humorous incident. Whatever of this is contained in the chapters was gleaned on the ground, and is, I believe, for the most part original. In traversing the circle of villages in the area I have attempted to avoid historical references, which are often tedious, though it was obviously impossible to eliminate them altogether. The question always is whether a particular locality is in itself sufficiently interesting to merit attention. This I leave for the reader to decide; his judgment and not mine must determine the issue. Since my object was to portray as much life as possible - not its sufferings and tragedy - I have made free use of persons, and these not fictitious, but real, who inhabited the villages within the memory of those yet living, believing that such records can never become stale or valueless, and that here, as elsewhere, a little fact is more convincing than a goodly array of fiction.' The River Thames takes its name from the Middle English Temese, which is derived from the Celtic name for river. Originating at the Thames Head in Gloucestershire, it is the longest river in England, flowing a total length of 236 miles, out through the Thames Estuary and in to the North Sea. On its journey to open water it passes through the country's capital, London, where it is deep enough to be navigable for ships, thus allowing the city to become a major international trade port.

'From Battersea to the Tower' provides the reader with an interesting and artistic picture of the history, beauty and occasion that is associated with an area of the Thames Path on both the North and South banks of the river. This book is a perfect accompaniment for both the walker and armchair reader, and focuses on the passage between Battersea Bridge and Tower Bridge, identifying numerous buildings of historical significance as well as the bridges themselves that cross the Thames. Each chapter includes a brief, but detailed history, of the relevant boroughs and districts which border the path, identifying the origins of many street names together with plenty of ghostly tales from the past.

It may not be the longest, deepest or widest river in the world but few bodies of water reveal as much about a nation's past and present, or as suggestive of its future, as England's River Thames. Tales of legendary lock-keepers and long-vanished weirs evoke the distant past of a river which evolved into a prime commercial artery linking the heart of England with the ports of Europe. In Victorian times, the Thames hosted regattas galore, its new bridges and tunnels were celebrated as marvels of their time, and London’s river was transformed from sewer to centrepiece of the British Empire. Talk of the Thames Gateway and the effectiveness of the Thames Barrier keeps the river in the news today, while the lengthening Thames Path makes the waterway more accessible than ever before. Through quiet meadows, rolling hills, leafy suburbia, industrial sites and a changing London riverside, Mick Sinclair tracks the Thames from source to sea, documenting internationally-known landmarks such as Tower Bridge and Windsor Castle and revealing lesser known features such as Godstow Abbey, Canvey Island, the Sandford Lasher, and George Orwell’s tranquil grave.

Described as the `anchor' of the Runnymede Research series, this volume forms a report on the Holocene environment and changes in the riverscape around the Runnymede site. The build-up of alluvial sediments, molluscan and palynological evidence, and the physical changes to the river and floodplain are all described and related to human activities at the site, such as clearance and agricultural schemes. The volume concludes with a history of the changing riverscape from the 8th millennium BC to the 2nd millennium AD and broader conclusions regarding the physical and biological setting are made.

The third edition retains all the popular features describing and illustrating each sector of each route, with waypoints and ‘rolling road’ diagrams, providing information and advice about potential or permanent hazards, the implications for the tide and guidance about shipping routes and anchorages. New simplified passage planning tables It includes new and unique passage planning tables which are simple, accurate and quick to use.
