School can be a special sort of nightmare for LGBTQ youth, who are sometimes targets of verbal or physical harassment with nowhere to turn for support.ÊNo Sanctuary tells the inspiring story of a mostly unseen rescue attempt by a small group of teachers who led the push to make schools safer for these at-risk students. Their efforts became the blueprint for Massachusetts's education policy and a nationwide movement, resulting in one of the most successful and far-reaching school reform efforts in recent times. Stephen Lane sheds light on this largely overlooked but critical series of reforms, placing the Safe Schools movement within the context of the larger gay rights movement and highlighting its key role in fostering greater acceptance of LGBTQ individuals throughout society.

This book is about his journey as a political refugee from Cuba to the United States. It's about the challenges, disappointments, and victories that destiny threw in his path. To bring in American poet Robert Frost, Jorge had two paths to choose to follow: one leading to an honorable life and the other taking him to a disreputable future. Looking back on the strong Judeo-Christian values that his family had given him, and with no support system to fall back on, he chose the path that led him to the man that he is today--a proud American who is eternally thankful for the opportunities that our country gave him, a proud husband with a forty-five-year marriage, a proud father of a wonderful son, and an ardent patriot who wants to keep the best that America has to offer for future generations. He saw how communism destroyed a once prosperous Cuba. He recognizes Communist China as the greatest threat to the survival of the United States. He was a Democrat for the majority of his life, as he considered himself to be a fiscal conservative with a social conscience. But he switched his political affiliation to the Republican Party after former President Obama extended an olive branch to the Government in Communist Cuba without demanding any concessions for human and civil rights. When some political gurus ask themselves the reasons for the recent exodus of Hispanics to the Republican Party, this book will provide a few answers. The book is divided into five parts: his life experiences in Cuba BC (before Castro), his life in Cuba AC (after Castro took control of the Cuban Government), life growing up in the United States, retirement, and an appendix of his articles on a myriad of topics that have touched his soul

After a speech at UMass Amherst on February 28, 1984, James Baldwin was asked by a student: "You said that the liberal facade and being a liberal is not enough. Well, what is? What is necessary?" Baldwin responded, "Commitment. That is what is necessary. You mean it or you don't." Taking up that challenge and drawing from Baldwin's fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and interviews, You Mean It or You Don't will spur today's progressives from conviction to action. It is not enough, authors Hollowell and McGhee urge us, to hold progressive views on racial justice, LGBTQ+ identity, and economic inequality. True and lasting change demands a response to Baldwin's radical challenge for moral commitment. Called to move from dreams of justice to living it out in communities, churches, and neighborhoods, we can show that we truly mean it. Welcome to life with James Baldwin. It is raw and challenging, inspired and embodied, passionate and fully awake.

Ink of Melancholy re-examines and re-evaluates William Faulkner's work from the late 1920s to the early 1940s, one of his most creative periods. Rather than approach Faulkner's fiction through a prefabricated grid, André Bleikasten concentrates on the texts themselves—on the motivations and circumstances of their composition, on the rich array of their themes, structures, textures, points of emphasis and repetition, as well as their rifts and gaps—while drawing on the resources of philosophy, psychoanalysis, anthropology. Brilliant in its thought and argument, Ink of Melancholy is one of the most insightful and stimulating studies of Faulkner's work.

The Past as Prologue ("Over There" in American History) By: John Tierney The Past as Prologue ("Over There" in American History) is a collection of essays (162) written between 2015 and 2021. The central theme, from the main title, is an attempt to tie history to the present and future on the subject, bearing in mind the recent domestic turmoil to "erase" aspects of "Americana" or to alter the past in order to build a different future. In this sense the book is "traditional" insofar as it respects the past as a "prologue" to what comes next. But the hope ("aspiration") is that the best elements of American history in world politics will serve as guides to what the country can do to provide a secure and free global future. The essays herein try to remember when Americans won world wars and the Cold War, when they made efforts to both "isolate" themselves from war and conflict and when they, reluctantly, had to "intervene" to establish peace and prosperity where disaster had destroyed both. In this sense the book looks "forward" to a better future, where the best elements of history carry forth and where the "other" elements are allowed to develop amidst stability and progress. Finally, the essays try to resurrect America's history in world politics, against a background where it has been forgotten, which in history has been called "normalcy." The reader may judge if the term applies.

This book is a study of the beginnings of law and the 'primitive' stages of its development, from the first rudimentary rules of conduct to the codes of the legal systems. Its scope extends to both cultures and legal systems from the ancient and medieval past: those of the Babylonians and Assyrians, Hittites, Hebrews, Romans, Hindus, English and other German peoples, and those of Africa, Australia and America. Correlating early economic and legal development, the book illustrates how laws change with the development of material culture. Originally published in 1971.
