Excerpt from The Past, Present and Future of the Society of Friends In a measure of that love which would gather all from their outward wanderings in search of the living among the dead, to the inward life and saving power of Truth, I would affectionately call our attention to that living way wherein our worthy forefathers were led to blessedness and peace, as well as to some of the causes which have operated in producing our lapsed condition, as a religious people professing, above all others, a quiet waiting, and humble dependence upon the enlivening, enlightening power of divine grace; which, it is testified, hath appeared to all men, as their in* ward, spiritual teacher, monitor, and guide. It was their faithfulness to this essential duty of humble, dependent waiting upon God, that Christ his dear Son might be made unto them wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption, that made our worthy forefathers that mighty power for good, in turning men from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, which characterized them, as they truly were, the friends of truth; for they were united in the one faith, which works by love to the purifying of the heart, unto, and in co-operation with, the great and holy Head of the living church, who wrought m and through them, both to will and to do of his own good pleasure. Excerpt from The Faith of a Quaker There arise also the insistent questions which beset all mystics, and which in Quakerism demanded a corporate, instead of an individual, answer. Was the light infallible? Was the claim to it an assumption of spiritual exaltation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The History of the Society of Friends in America, Vol. 1: Part 3 We have used the term murder, and used it advisedly; for the martyrdom of the three Friends on Boston Common had been perpetrated contrary to the laws of the realm. The charter of Massachusetts in no degree empowered the local authorities to enact laws contrary to the fundamental principles of English jurisprudence and English liberty. In pursuing their despotic course, they did so likewise with the consciousness that it was repulsive to the feelings of the community. Towards the close of 1660, this was so intelligibly manifested, that for a time they deemed it prudent to suspend the operation of the law for execut ing Friends, and thus the life of Joseph Nicholson was saved. Excerpt from The History of the Society of Friends in America, Vol. 1 To investigate the rise and to trace the progress of a particular section of the religious community is an interesting object, and when it has reference to a people such as the Society of Friends, whose principles and practices so prominently distinguish them among others of the Christian name, the interest of such a pursuit becomes greatly enhanced. The design of the following sheets is to record the history of this people in America, - a country in which they experienced the extremes of entire freedom of conscience on the one hand, and cruel religious persecution on the other. There exist at the present time on the North American continent nearly six hundred distinct religious assemblies of the Society of Friends, scattered over the region extending from Canada and Maine in the north, to the Carolinas and Tennessee in the South, and from its cities and ports on the Atlantic to the countries lying west of the Mississippi. These compose in all seven separate and independent Yearly Meetings, and form in the aggregate four-fifths of the whole number of this people in the world. The consideration of this fact is calculated therefore to excite an inquiry such as that to which this work is devoted. Excerpt from The Sure Foundation: Or Past and Future of the Society of Friends With a Supplemental Chapter on Some of the Essays Already Published It is an unusual circumstance for an admirer of any sect to offer a public prize for discovering its failings without reference to its excellencies; and still more so, to select as judges three eminent writers, none of whom agree with its fundamental views. If the soundness of the main doctrines of Friends had. Been the required postulate upon which all essays should be based, the result would have been less singular. By the present mode, not only has full scope been given to those who (like the author of the second prize essay) condemn e'ier'y thing which is opposed to Anglo-catholicism; but, on the other hand, those who would uphold Quakerism, have, from the nature of the advertisement, been dis couraged from making allusion to its merits, and been specially occupied in setting forth its faults. The impulse, thus unintentionally given by the prize donor, to write down the principle as well as the prac tices of this Society, has brought to light eight or ten printed essays, all of which are of necessity more or less fault-finding, and one or two directly antagonistic Such an one-sided contemplation of its tenets by one hundred and fifty essayists would be an extremely severe ordeal for any sect, but it is especially so for the Friends, whose practices differ in many respects from other Christian communities. N 0 fair exposition can be arrived at by looking only upon the dark side; and the present essay is published at the request of several fi'iends, who think it embraces a fuller and more just view of Quakerism.
