"The Path Beyond Historicism" is a groundbreaking work that challenges the limitations of historicist thought and offers a fresh perspective on the complexities of human history. In an era of rapid change and profound uncertainty, this book invites readers to embark on an intellectual journey that transcends the confines of traditional historical narratives and opens up new horizons of understanding. Historicism, with its emphasis on the inexorable march of progress and the inevitability of certain historical outcomes, has dominated our intellectual landscape for centuries. However, as we navigate the challenges of the 21st century, it is becoming increasingly clear that the historicist worldview is inadequate and even counterproductive. "The Path Beyond Historicism" argues that historicism's rigid determinism stifles creativity, innovation, and the possibility of genuine social transformation. It encourages complacency and resignation in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles. By perpetuating the illusion of a preordained destiny, historicism undermines our sense of agency and responsibility, leading to a diminished capacity for critical engagement with the world. In contrast, this book embraces a more open-ended and dynamic understanding of history. It recognizes the fluidity and interconnectedness of historical processes, the significance of contingency and uncertainty, and the profound impact of human choices and actions. This fresh perspective allows us to break free from the constraints of historicist determinism and explore the myriad possibilities that lie ahead. "The Path Beyond Historicism" is a call to action, inviting readers to question conventional wisdom and to envision a future that is not bound by the limitations of historicism. It is an essential read for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the past, the present, and the possibilities for the future. If you like this book, write a review!

Moving beyond a self-indulgent attitude about Africa’s historical victimhood, the book seeks to capture how African states individually and Africa’s collective institutions (the AU) are providing agency in Africa’s international relations. While African states have been trailblazers in such ideas as ‘The Responsibility to Protect’, as conceived in the African Union Constitutive Act (2001) which preceded the United Nations (UN) Secretary General’s report “In Larger Freedom” (2005) in which the UN adopted the concept, African agency in international relations has not always been captured proactively. This volume seeks to document Africa (and African states) in a state of proactivity as opposed to a reactionary mode of international relations which has long been the case due to the discipline’s heavy concentration on the West. The main themes explored are: African agency in international relations and commerce, agency in Africa’s balancing of big and regional powers, reshaping Africa-EU relations beyond the Cotonou Agreements, Africa and international human rights institutions, African efforts in elections and conflicts in Africa and relationship building among African leaders.

Religion Within The Limits Of History Alone written by Demian Wheeler and has been published by State University of New York Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-09-01 with Religion categories.
Among the greatest challenges facing religious thinkers today is that created by historicism, the notion that human beings and their myriad understandings of reality are utterly historical, conditioned by contingent circumstances and tied to particular contexts. In this book, Demian Wheeler confronts the historicist challenge by delineating and defending a particular trajectory of historicist thought known as pragmatic historicism. Rooted in the German Enlightenment and fully developed within the early Chicago school of theology, pragmatic historicism is a predominantly American tradition that was philosophically nurtured by classical pragmatism and its intellectual siblings, naturalism and radical empiricism. Religion within the Limits of History Alone not only undertakes a detailed genealogy of this pragmatic historicist lineage but also sets forth a constructive program for contemporary theology by charting a path for its future development. Wheeler shows that pragmatic historicism is an underdeveloped resource for contemporary theology since it offers a model for normative religious thought that is theologically compelling yet wholly nonsupernaturalistic, deeply pluralistic, unflinchingly liberal, and radically historicist.

Historicism And Fascism In Modern Italy written by David D. Roberts and has been published by University of Toronto Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-10-27 with Political Science categories.
During the early decades of the twentieth century, Italy produced distinctive innovations in both the intellectual and political realms. On the one hand, Benedetto Croce (1866-1952) and Giovanni Gentile (1875-1944) spearheaded a radical rethinking of historicism and philosophical idealism that significantly reoriented Italian culture. On the other hand, the period witnessed the first rumblings of fascism. Assuming opposite sides, Gentile became the semi-official philosopher of fascism while Croce argued for a renewed liberalism based on 'absolute' historicism. In Historicism and Fascism in Modern Italy, David D. Roberts uses the ideological conflict between Croce and Gentile as a basis for a wider discussion of the interplay between politics and ideas in Italy during the early-twentieth century. Roberts examines the connection between fascism and the modern Italian intellectual tradition, arguing that the relationship not only deepens our understanding of fascism and liberalism but also illuminates ongoing dangers and possibilities in the wider Western world. This set of twelve essays by one of the leading scholars in the field represents an authoritative view of the modern Italian intellectual tradition, its relationship with fascism, and its enduring implications for history, politics, and culture in Italy and beyond.

Nineteenth-century European thought, especially in Germany, was increasingly dominated by a new historicist impulse to situate every event, person, or text in its particular context. At odds with the transcendent claims of philosophy and--more significantly--theology, historicism came to be attacked by its critics for reducing human experience to a series of disconnected moments, each of which was the product of decidedly mundane, rather than sacred, origins. By the late nineteenth century and into the Weimar period, historicism was seen by many as a grinding force that corroded social values and was emblematic of modern society's gravest ills. Resisting History examines the backlash against historicism, focusing on four major Jewish thinkers. David Myers situates these thinkers in proximity to leading Protestant thinkers of the time, but argues that German Jews and Christians shared a complex cultural and discursive world best understood in terms of exchange and adaptation rather than influence. After examining the growing dominance of the new historicist thinking in the nineteenth century, the book analyzes the critical responses of Hermann Cohen, Franz Rosenzweig, Leo Strauss, and Isaac Breuer. For this fascinating and diverse quartet of thinkers, historicism posed a stark challenge to the ongoing vitality of Judaism in the modern world. And yet, as they set out to dilute or eliminate its destructive tendencies, these thinkers often made recourse to the very tools and methods of historicism. In doing so, they demonstrated the utter inescapability of historicism in modern culture, whether approached from a Christian or Jewish perspective.

Spain Beyond Spain: Modernity, Literary History, and National Identity is a collection of essays in modern Spanish literary and cultural studies by sixteen specialists from Spain, the United States, and Great Britain. The essays have a common point of origin: a major conference, entitled Espana fuera de Espana: Los espacios de la historia literaria, held in the spring of 2001 at Harvard University. The essays also have a common focus: the fate of literary history in the wake of theory and its attendant programs of inquiry, most notably cultural studies, post colonial studies, new historicism, women's studies, and transatlantic studies. Their points of arrival, however, vary significantly. What constitutes Spain and what counts as Spanish are primary concerns, subtending related questions of history, literature, nationality, and cultural production. Brad Epps is Professor of Romance Languages and Literatures and of the Committee on Degrees in Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Harvard University. Luis Fernandez Cifuentes is Robert S. and Ilse Friend Professor of Romance Languages and Literatures at Harvard University.
