The ancient counties surrounding the Weald in the SE corner of England have a strongly marked character of their own that has survived remarkably well in the face of ever-increasing population pressure. The area is, however, comparatively neglected in discussion of Roman Britain, where it is often subsumed into a generalised treatment of the ‘civilian’ part of Britannia that is based largely on other parts of the country. This book aims to redress the balance. The focus is particularly on Kent, Surrey and Sussex account is taken of information from neighbouring counties, particularly when the difficult subsoils affect the availability of evidence. An overview of the environment and a consideration of themes relevant to the South-East as a whole accompany 14 papers covering the topics of rural settlement in each county, crops, querns and millstones, animal exploitation, salt production, leatherworking, the working of bone and similar materials, the production of iron and iron objects, non-ferrous metalworking, pottery production and the supply of tile to Roman London. Agriculture and industry provides an up-to-date assessment of our knowledge of the southern hinterland of Roman London and an area that was particularly open to influences from the Continent.

In the second half of the twentieth century, significant changes were occurring within the agricultural industry, including an increase in efficiency and government intervention, as well as expanded and more complicated patterns of trade. This comprehensive volume, first published in 1986, reflects how these developments challenged the field of agricultural geography. Considering agricultural innovations, farming systems, government policy and land ownership, this title provides an essential background to students with an interest in agricultural methods, distribution and reform.

First published in 1967, this book explores the theme of geographical generalization, or model building. It is composed of eight of the chapters from the original Models in Geography, published in 1967. The first chapter broadly outlines geographical generalization and examines the nature and function of generalized statements, ranging from conceptual models to scale models, in a geographical context. The following chapter deals with model theory in a wider scientific framework and the rest of the book discusses models of physical systems and information models. The book considers model-type generalizations that are applied in the three fields of geomorphology, meteorology and climatology, and hydrology before focusing on the transference of information and ideas in geography. This text represents a robustly anti-idiographic statement of modern work in one of the major branches of geography.

An Agricultural Geography of Great Britain is a comprehensive account of Great Britain's agricultural geography. The relationship between agriculture and geography is highlighted, with emphasis on the points of contact between them, including soils, geology, climate, and systems of farming. The farming systems of Great Britain are described, along with the agriculture of Scotland and the border country as well as the agricultural regions of England and Wales. This book is divided into four sections and begins with an overview of the factors affecting the choice of a farming system, including economic circumstances, soil, climate, topography, disease, and the personal preference and individual skills of the farmer. The next section is devoted to Great Britain's farming systems, which include hill sheep farming and hill sheep with cattle; stock rearing and fattening; dairy farming; horticulture and market gardening, often with some livestock; and pigs and poultry. The agriculture of Scotland and the border country is then considered, followed by a discussion on the agricultural regions of England and Wales. This monograph is intended primarily for agriculturists and geographers as well as students of agricultural geography.
