Excerpt from Orchard Insects of the Pacific Northwest and Their Control The larva or worm is the only injurious stage of the codling moth, and the only injury of consequence is to the fruit. The young worms, upon hatching from the eggs, crawl to the nearest fruit and burrow into it, producing the familiar wormy apple or pear. Many worms enter through the calyx end, Where the calyx affords them protection and they can easily obtain a foothold. Many others enter at the pomt Where two fruits touch, or Where a leaf is ih' contact with a fruit. Still others are able to burrow into the exposed side of the fruit. The worm penetrates the skin and excavates a small cavity beneath it in an hour or so. It remains near the surface for a few days and then burrows to the center of the fruit, usually feeding chiefly on the seeds and Core. When full grown the worm makes a large tunnel to the surface through which it leaves the fruit. Wormy fruit is of small commercial value, since it will not keep long, and the laws of some States forbid its being shipped, except to byproducts p ants. Excerpt from The Insects Destructive to Fruits Insects are among the most formidable enemies to success ful fruit-culture. The losses occasioned by the plum curculio alone amount to more than a million of dollars annually. Orchardists are sometimes deterred, by the attacks of this in sect, from attempts to raise the apricot, nectarine, peach, and plum; and the market supply of apples and pears is often much disfigured by it. The apple-worm, or codling-moth, is even a more formidable insect pest. New York fruit-growers alone yearly furnish $2, worth of apples and worth of pears to feed this insect; and other similar apple-growing States report nearly as large an annual loss from its ravages. The depredations of many other insect pests, like the apple tree and the peach-tree borers, the canker-worms, the tent caterpillars, the apple maggot, and the pear psylla, each causes annual losses amounting to several hundred thousand dollars. As a general rule those remedial measures are of little value, which attempt merely to repel insects without destroy ing them. Excerpt from The Pear Thrips (Euthrips Pyri) We believe that if the ground be thoroughly plowed and cultivated during November, December, and January, or before the insects leave the ground, which they begin to do by the first of February, many of these young thrips would be killed or injured or so disturbed that but few would ever reach maturity. Our present manner of cultivation is well adapted to give the thrips a long, undisturbed period of rest. During the late spring and early summer, when thrips are in the ground, we give the soil nothing but light cultivation, and as the insects are still in an active larval stage they seek another place of hiding, if disturbed. After this no cultivation is usually done until the last of February or March of the following year, by which time the insects have left the ground. While the plowing and cultivating method of control has not been thoroughly tried, we believe it gives more promise than any other yet suggested. On this hypothesis it would seem that the reappearance of the species in years after its destruction is to be accounted for by migrations of the moths from the South northward.
