Post Independence India India gained independence from Great Britain in 1947, but the British provinces, under the crown, were partitioned into two dominions of India and Pakistan and all princely states acceded to either of the two dominions. After Independence, a new era began. Pt. Nehru took the reins of the newly independent nation. Nehru era made a new history. Later, came on the scene, Indira Gandhi. Her eventful period was followed by Janata Party rule and thus, the story went on. There are a lot of books on Indian History, already published and stacks in libraries are packed with them. But, it is always felt that a seriously composed, compact and not so lengthy book on the subject could always create a niche for itself. Hence, this endeavor. Contents: Introduction • India before Independence • Dawn of Freedom • Significant Developments after Independence • Prime Ministers • Indo-Pakistan Conflicts and Wars • System of Governance in India • National Symbols of India

The primary mission of this text is clarifying many of the misconceptions about Paulo Freire’s theories, concepts and his implications for education. It revisits his ideas and explains more fully the philosophical influences that shaped concepts such as problem posing, conscientization and praxis. The fundamental thesis, then, is that the present absence of in-depth philosophical analysis leaves an unacceptable void in the literature addressing Freire’s work, while also promoting frequent misconceptions and superficial understandings about his relationship to contemporary education. Indeed, the philosophical assumptions contributing to Freire’s critical pedagogy require identification, unravelling and ultimately evaluation on the basis of their epistemic and moral tenability. Most existing applications of Freire’s pedagogy are unfortunately superficial because they simply sloganize terms such as banking education, conscientization, praxis, and humanization. A slogan in education popularizes a concept or idea in a positive way, but offers very little in terms of critical reflection or analysis. In order to understand these terms and their origin and apply them as Freire intended, a far richer and more in depth examination of Freire is desperately needed. This text will provide precisely that type of examination.

“Is democracy in crisis?” Against the background of a visible loss of trust in political, economic, religious and other institutions in Japan and Germany, this question is being posed with increasing urgency. This volume brings together contributions from political sciences, sociology, economics, psychology, history, law, and educational science to shed light on the future of our democracies, economies, educational systems, party politics, national policies, and social-structural changes, as well as socialization in the family and school, and related value changes. By focusing on Japan and Germany, and including examples from Western Europe and East Asia, this publication will determine transnational tendencies and provide an understanding of the different consequences of development from country to country against the background of different historical-cultural traditions and institutional realities.
