Excerpt from The Peril of the Republic of the United States of America In 1891 my friend and fellow worker, Alonzo T. Jones, wrote his Two Republics, or Rome and the United States of America. It was my privilege to read this remarkable work in the proof; and, from the general field of the annals of mankind, my attention was specifically turned to the prophetical and philosophical history of the Republic of Rome and the Republic of the United States. During the past nine years, having occupied the chair of history in the College at this place, my duties have accorded me abundant opportunity to pursue my cherished theme. With me the study of the great events of the present has been with the one desire that, guided by the Word of God, I might, through the things transpiring around me, read correctly the events which are yet to take place. The matters touched upon in this little book were long ago recorded in sacred, prophetic Writ. They vitally concern the welfare and peace of the United States, and are inti mately connected with the deeds which will ultimately bring to a close the' long and tragic history of the world. We are apt to believe that we live in better times than those with which others have been favored; but those wonderful words of James Russell Lowell apply just as much to the present time as to any time in past history. Democracy in the world is backsliding in many countries around the globe at the present time due to various reasons. Different nations may have their own particular reasons such as socioeconomic inequality, poverty, failure of checks and balances that may result in an abrupt military coup d'etat to change from democracy to tyranny. In nations where democracy failed, there were no tanks on the street. Constitution of the land remained, but elected leaders became autocrats, maintaining a veneer of democracy. America, being a nation with nearly 80 percent of Christians, has been the strongest democracy in the world who championed it as the model for the rest of the world. However, democracy in America appears to be in peril because of political bickering, partisan gridlock, and promulgation of falsities, misinformation, and faux faith by one political party. By introducing the foundational principles of democracy from the philosophical arguments of Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, the author shows how and why the cornerstone of democracy in America shows signs of crumbling. The book vividly explains: Politics without God will shatter the foundation of democracy. Present political system rejects the checks and balances laid by the founding fathers. The right wing has cultivated a spirit of untruth that spreads like a wildfire. Rejecting truth by political parties and leadership is a sign of strong delusion. There is a clear moral bankruptcy in the present political sphere of our nation. The brightness of democracy in America which Tocqueville praised has been tarnished. Hypocritic and dishonest leaders should not reign, lest the people be ensnared. American politicians must register their solemn oath in heaven to act in truth. No nation can be established in one day but can shatter in one day by a despot. America must realign with God to lead the nation in truth, justice, and freedom for all. Democracy turns to tyranny when a moral man becomes amoral. With biblical prophecies and instructions, the author shows that America faces a real threat to its democracy unless it resists tyrants with all their mind, soul, and strength, which is obedience to God who can anchor the nation on its solid foundation set by the Founding Fathers. Every citizen, political and judicial leaders of the nation, are the cupbearers and the watchmen of the nation.

In 1899, after having ousted the Spanish from their oppressive colonial rule over the Philippine Islands, as well as Cuba, the United States annexed the Philippines and began military suppression of the independence movement led by Emilio Aguinaldo. The U.S. replicated the very brutalities that had been cited as reason for war against Spain, including forcible removal of Filipino civilians into re-concentration camps, and use of torture in interrogations. The combat took the lives of over 4,000 Americans,16,000 Filipino combatants and at least 20,000 civilians. Against this background, the prominent educator Percy T. Magan wrote “The Peril of the Republic of the United States of America.” A remarkable piece of Adventist anti-imperialist literature, Magan's book decried the forcible annexation of the Philippines as “national apostasy.” In this embrace of imperial¬ism, America was abandoning the “new order of things” and reverting to the milita¬rism and oppression characteristic of the old world. In his book, Magan addressed the repressive impact of imperialism on American liberty, the incompatibility of a military establishment with republican government, and the influence of prophetic belief over political action. Magan did not foresee an aroused citizenry effecting a lasting transformation of the American political order. The demise of liberty was inevitable as a turbulent prelude to Christ himself returning to sweep aside all earthly powers and establish his own eternal kingdom of love and justice. Magan saw his work as similar to that of biblical prophets sent to warn kings and nations about the consequences of departure from the divine intention. He believed, “ambassadors of Jesus Christ” should make their voices heard “in the courts and congresses of human powers of earthly governments,” and called upon citizens of the coming kingdom of God to be true to principles “in things national as well as personal” and to “work for right principles while it is day.” Like other Adventists of his era, Magan did not hesitate to apply his apocalyptic world view to government foreign policy, and, in so doing, held the government to its own highest standards of benevolence and human rights.

Excerpt from Causes of the Civil War in America The Continental Congress, which was the central ad ministrative board during this epoch, was a diet of envoys from sovereign states. It had no power to act on individuals. It could not command the states. It could move only by requisitions and recommendations. Its functions were essentially diplomatic, like those of the states-general of the old Dutch republic, like those of the modern Germanic confederation. Excerpt from England and America After Independence a Short Examination of Their International Intercourse, 1783-1872 Amid the joy and congratulations with which the young confederacy stood alone, prepared for a glorious future, there remained the anxious thought in the minds of far seeing Americans that one important matter required early attention. The United States wanted, first of all, a stable form of government, which should give cohesion to the elements of the new republic, and enable it to present a dignified front to the older countries of Europe. Credit with Europe was of supreme importance to them. Escape from faction at home was a matter of no less serious con cern. The struggle for Independence had made them a Union. But it seemed that, peace having relieved them from the pressing need of coalition, the want of dignity and sound authority in the government would sooner or later end in anarchy and disruption. It was the greatest peril to the confederacy that the several States were often nu willing to concur in measures of public utility - could not make the needful sacrifices for securing national stability. Congress was powerless to enforce the provisions of the treaty of peace. More than twelve months had elapsed between the signing of the preliminary treaty and its final ratification in January, 1784. Such was the apathy (per haps mingled with distrust) which was shown by some of the States, that many weeks elapsed before the attendance of the required number could be procured, and then only twenty-three members were present at the ratification.
