Modernism is commonly perceived as a response to the cataclysmic events of the early twentieth century. To what extent then can we explain its continued persistence? Madelyn Detloff argues for modernism's relevance to our own age, a time of escalating loss, retribution and desire. Some of the social formations that inspired modernist cultural production - xenophobic nationalism and imperial hubris - are still with us. Collage and Literature analyzes how and why the history of literature and art changed irrevocably beginning in the early years of the twentieth century, and what that change has meant for late modernism and postmodernism. Starting from Pablo Picasso’s 1912 gesture, breaking the fundamental logic of representation, of pasting a piece of oilcloth onto a canvas, and moving up to Kenneth Goldsmith’s 2015 reading of an autopsy report of an unarmed young black man shot by police (which he framed as a poem entitled Michael Brown’s Body) this volume moves through a series of case studies encapsulating issues of juxtaposition and framing, the central ways identify collage. Its thesis is that collage—and, in fact, only collage—meaningfully overcomes formal and generic boundaries between the literary and the non-literary. The overwriting of these traditional boundaries happens in the service of collage’s anti-narrative drive, a drive that may be, in turn, interruptive or destructive. The expansion of collage’s horizons— broadly, to include the use of radical juxtaposition in the arts—reveals a surprisingly wide range of American artists and writers using the logic of juxtaposition as they imagine new worlds, disrupt accepted narratives about society and art, and create meaning through form as much as through paraphrasable content. In addressing a wide range of contested issues, recent artists realize the shocking force of collage. By recovering this shock, Collage and Literature restores collage to its multimedia origins in order to reveal its powerful and political affects.

The purpose of art, the Paris-trained artist Amrita Sher-Gil wrote in 1936, is to "create the forms of the future” by “draw[ing] its inspiration from the present.” Through art, new worlds can be imagined into existence as artists cultivate forms of belonging and networks of association that oppose colonialist and nationalist norms. Drawing on Edward Said’s notion of “affiliation” as a critical and cultural imperative against empire and nation-state, Worldly Affiliations traces the emergence of a national art world in twentieth-century India and emphasizes its cosmopolitan ambitions and orientations. Sonal Khullar focuses on four major Indian artists—Sher-Gil, Maqbool Fida Husain, K. G. Subramanyan, and Bhupen Khakhar—situating their careers within national and global histories of modernism and modernity. Through a close analysis of original artwork, archival materials, artists’ writing, and period criticism, Khullar provides a vivid historical account of the state and stakes of artistic practice in India from the late colonial through postcolonial periods. She discusses the shifting terms of Indian artists’ engagement with the West—an urgent yet fraught project in the wake of British colonialism—and to a lesser extent with African and Latin American cultural movements such as Négritude and Mexican muralism. Written in a lucid and engaging style, this book links artistic developments in India to newly emerging histories of modern art in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Drawing on original research in the twenty-first-century art world, Khullar shows the persistence of modernism in contemporary art from India and compares its function to Walter Benjamin’s ruin. The Persistence of Subjectivity examines several approaches to, and critiques of, the core notion in the self-understanding and legitimation of the modern, 'bourgeois' form of life: the free, reflective, self-determining subject.
