Excerpt from The Personality of American Cities This book has been in preparation for nearly four years. In that time the author has been in each of the cities that he has set forth to describe herein. With the exception of Charleston, New Orleans and the three cities of the North Pacific, he has been in each city two or three or even four or five times. The task that he has essayed - placing in a single chapter even something of the flavor and personality of a typical American town - has not been an easy one, but he hopes that he has given it a measure of fidelity and accuracy if nothing more. Of course, he does not believe that he has included within these covers all of the American cities of distinctive personality. Such a list would include necessarily such clear-cut New England towns as Portland, Worcester, Springfield, Hartford and New Haven; it would give heed to the solid Dutch manors of Albany; the wonderful development of Detroit, builded into a great city by the development of the motor car; the distinctive features of Milwaukee; the southern charm of Indianapolis and Cincinnati and Louisville; the breezy western atmosphere of Omaha and of Kansas City. And in Canada, Winnipeg, already proclaiming herself as the "Chicago of the Dominion," Vancouver and Victoria demand attention. The author regrets that the lack of personal acquaintance with the charms of some of these cities, as well as the pressure of space, serves to prevent their being included within the pages of his book. It is quite possible, however, that some or all of them may be included within subsequent editions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Evolution and the Need of Atonement As the title indicates, the main object of this book is not to offer a new theory of the Atonement. Rather it is intended to Show that when the origin and history of man are studied from the scientific, and especially the biological side, the spiritual life, its partial failure, and the need for Atonement, far from receding into vagueness and unreality, are thrown into strong relief. These lessons are designed for use at the beginning of the second year's study of Greek, thereby serving as a partial review of the first year's work and as an introduction to the composition work in connection with the reading of Xenophon's Anabasis. Part II contains short, simple English sentences, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. These should be used daily in connection with the reading of the text. Part III contains connected English prose, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. This is carefully graded, so that the stu dent who performs faithfully the work outlined here will be able to pass the entrance examination of any of the American colleges. The method of writing Greek at sight used in this book needs a word of explanation. Excerpt from City Values: An Analysis of the Social Status and Possibilities of American City Life Rapid transition is the spirit of the present age. All about are evidences of the certain decay of dogma and convention - in science, religion, politics, and business. No longer does the old order please: no longer can the ancient superstitions hold the mind and heart. In contrast, we find a more thorough and intelligent inventory-taking of the social stock, a more rigorous and satisfactory disposal of an obsolete and worn-out civilization. The narrow emphasis on creed is giving way to a broader and more pragmatic concept of ethical life. In the business world there is an unrest that denotes a keener insight into industrial values and a better appreciation of large national issues. We feel stirrings of new life in those parts of the body social that we thought dead or sleeping. Fresh incentives revitalize old institutions. New associations form for new needs and works. The younger generation is playing an increasing part in this movement, not only in the furnishing of raw material for a more electric race, but also in the active impetus imparted to the older generation by its insistent demands for a more efficient and satisfying life. To an increasing degree are we becoming more intensely alive - physically, intellectually, and socially. And the tendency is in the direction of a collective appreciation of the sacrifices and pleasures of life - of those things that spell comfort, culture, and citizenship for the community as a whole. The most interesting phase of this epoch is the undeniable and insatiable desire to "know things as they really exist." Sex psychology and sex hygiene are rapidly becoming common property as topics of serious conversation and thought. We are finding out why our cities are corrupt, and why vice, crime, and adulterated foods exist. The magazines and newspapers, quick to give the public what it wants, open their columns as forums of discussion on live contemporary topics. Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war.
