Excerpt from Napoleon a Sketch of His Life, Character, Struggles, and Achievements IN this volume the author has made the effort to portray Napoleon as he appears to an' average man. Archives have not been rummaged, new sources of information have not been discovered; the author merely claims to have used such authorities, old and new, as are accessible to any diligent student. No attempt has been made to give a full and detailed account of Napoleon's life or work. To do so would have required the labor of a decade, and the result would be almost a library. The author has tried to give to the great Corsican his proper historical position, his true rating as a man and a ruler, - together with a just estimate of his achievements. Excerpt from A Continuation of Remarks on the Character of Napoleon Bonaparte, Occasioned by the Publication of Scott's Life of Napoleon The passion for power is one Of the most universal, nor is it to be regarded as a crime in all its forms. Sweeping censures on a natural sentiment cast blame On the Creator. This prin ciple shows itself in the very dawn of our existence. -the child never exults and rejoices more, than when it becomes conscious of power by overcoming difficulties, or compassing new. Ends. All our desires and appetites lend aid and energy to this passion, for all find increase of gratification, in proportion to our in crease Of power. We ought to add, that this principle is fed from nobler sources. Power is a chief element of all the com manding qualities of our nature. It enters into all the higher virtues; such as magnanimity, fortitude, constancy. It enters into intellectual eminence. It is power of thought and utterance which immortalizes the products of genius. Is it strange that an attribute, through whichall our passions reach their objects, and which characterises whatever is great or admirable in man, should awaken intense desire, and be sought as one of the'chief goods of life? Excerpt from Fall of Napoleon Duced so far as they are necessary for clearness. A vast amount of Napoleonic literature has been published during the last ten or fifteen years, and with the greater part of that literature the present writer claims to be acquainted. The result of this has been not only to bring to light many facts which were previously unknown, but to modify in many respects the judgments passed upon N apoleon's actions by competent historians. For instance, no action of Napoleon has been more universally con demmed than his refusal to accept terms of peace during the armistice of 1813, but the analysis of the policy of Metternich made by M. Albert Sorel in his last published volume has shown that it would have been impossible for Napoleon to have acted otherwise. It is believed that the result of these researches now finds place for the first time in an English book, and the View of Napoleon's character and conduct, which is rather indicated in these pages than positively stated, is different to that generally held by English historians. For reasons which have been thought sufficient, the pages of this book have not been burdened. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Life of Napoleon Bonaparte Napoleon, when about ten years of age, was sent to the military school of Brienne, his parents having destined him for the profession of arms - a profession at that time, in conse quence of a prejudice still too prevalent, viewed as peculiarly the pursuit of a noble and gene rous mind. Forty years afterwards he spoke of his parting from his mother, upon the occasion referred to, ' as having been particularly bitter and painful to his feelings. Brienne school, although of a military character, was somewhat inconsistently placed under the superintend ence of a few monks, and regulated, in many respects, upon monastic principles. Each pupil was locked up at night in a solitary cell, the whole furniture of which consisted of a bed, an iron water-pitcher, and a basin. Napoleon became much attached to this school. I was happy at Brienne, was an expression which frequently dropped from his lips, when seated on the throne of empire.
