Because the Christian faith stands and falls with Jesus Christ, Christology is at the heart of its theology. Answering the question of Jesus Christ's identity is therefore urgent. Petr Gallus attempts to do so by critically reflecting on tradition and articulating it for today.

Death, Resurrection, and Human Destiny: Christian and Muslim Perspectives is a record of the 2012 Building Bridges seminar for leading Christian and Muslim scholars, convened by Rowan Williams, then Archbishop of Canterbury. The essays in this volume explore what the Bible and Qurʾān—and the Christian and Islamic theological traditions—have to say about death, resurrection, and human destiny. Special attention is given to the writings of al-Ghazali and Dante. Other essays explore the notion of the good death. Funeral practices of each tradition are explained. Relevant texts are included with commentary, as are personal reflections on death by several of the seminar participants. An account of the informal conversations at the seminar conveys a vivid sense of the lively, penetrating, but respectful dialogue which took place. Three short pieces by Rowan Williams provide his opening comments at the seminar and his reflections on its proceedings. The volume also contains an analysis of the Building Bridges Seminar after a decade of his leadership.

Christian faith depends upon the resurrection of Jesus, but the claim about Jesus' resurrection is, nevertheless, disputed. This book, written by a New Testament scholar and a systematic theologian in conjunction, develops the conditions for the claim. It carefully analyzes the relevant texts and their possible interpretations and engages with New Testament scholarship in order to show nuances and different trajectories in the material. The picture emerging is that the New Testament authors themselves tried to come to terms with how to understand the claim that Jesus had been resurrected from the dead. But the book does not stop there: by also asking for the experiential content that gave rise to the belief in the resurrection. Sandnes and Henriksen argue that there is no such thing as an experience of the resurrection reported in the New Testament--only experiences of an empty tomb and appearance of Jesus, interpreted as Jesus resurrected. Hence, resurrection emerges as an interpretative category for post-Easter experiences, and is only understandable in light of the full content of Jesus' ministry and its context.

What Really Happened To Jesus written by Gerd Lüdemann and has been published by Westminster John Knox Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995-01-01 with Religion categories.

Were the resurrection appearances real physical events - or nothing more than grief-induced hallucinations? What does it mean to say, Jesus rose from the dead? Dissatisfied with what he regarded as evasive answers given by theologians and scholars about the nature of the resurrection of Jesus, Gerd Ludemann here subjects the New Testament traditions to a thorough investigation. In particular, Ludemann is concerned with the story of the empty tomb and the subsequent appearance stories first related by Peter. Ludemann's startling and somewhat radical conclusions have created a stir in Europe. This book, written for nonspecialists, presents Ludemann's provocative conclusions. Readers will find a positive, albeit a revolutionary, new way of viewing the resurrection.

Christians today go directly to Heaven once they are finished with their earthly existence. This is a great comfort to all believers. But that wasn't the belief of the Old Testament people of God. How is it that Christians today see it differently? What changed? When did it change? Understanding the general resurrection of the dead from the Preterist standpoint - and the fact that it has already been fulfilled - actually serves to shed light on the mindset of the modern Christian. Eternal life in Heaven, surrounded by the overwhelming love of God, is distinctly and intensely preferable to any existence on earth. This book looks at the general resurrection of the dead as the culmination of the work of Christ in the first century and provides great comfort for what it means in our understanding of the afterlife, while at the same time countering the idea that the resurrection of the dead, in Preterist thought, is relegated merely to a concept of passing from the Old Covenant to the New Covenant. The resurrection of the dead also results in a great promise for us today, since we don't have to face any intermediate state to await some future resurrection, but instead go directly to be in our eternal home with our Creator, in a new body provided for us in Heaven - a body, unlike the physical body, which is suitable for existence in Heaven.Beginning in Genesis and working clear through to Revelation, relevant passages that have been attributed to the idea of the resurrection of the dead are examined, with a critical eye on what such passages meant to the original audience in their cosmic mindset, and how we should understand them today.

Investigating The Resurrection Of Jesus Christ written by Andrew Loke and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-04-30 with Religion categories.

This book provides an original and comprehensive assessment of the hypotheses concerning the origin of resurrection Christology. It fills a gap in the literature by addressing these issues using a transdisciplinary approach involving historical-critical study of the New Testament, theology, analytic philosophy, psychology and comparative religion. Using a novel analytic framework, this book demonstrates that a logically exhaustive list of hypotheses concerning the claims of Jesus’ post-mortem appearances and the outcome of Jesus’ body can be formulated. It addresses these hypotheses in detail, including sophisticated combinations of hallucination hypothesis with cognitive dissonance; memory distortion; and confirmation bias. Addressing writings from both within and outside of Christianity, it also demonstrates how a comparative religion approach might further illuminate the origins of Christianity. This is a thorough study of arguably the key event in the formation of the Christian faith. As such, it will be of keen interest to theologians, New Testament scholars, philosophers, and scholars of religious studies.
