Excerpt from The Solar System: A Study of Recent Observations His work grew out of a series of lectures de livered at Columbia University. Intended for the general student, these were mainly historical and were used to supplement standard text-books and to guide the students in their reading. An at tempt was made to present the subject in untechnical language and without the use of mathematics; to show by what steps the precise knowledge of to-day has been reached, and to explain the marvellous results of modern methods and modern observations. The subject of the present volume, the Solar Sys tem, covers such a wide field that, in order to keep within reasonable bounds, many interesting subjects had to be omitted. To this may be attributed the rather scant mention of many important matters and the entire elimination of others. Eclipses of the sun, the most impressive of astronomical phenomena, have been passed over with but brief mention in con nection with the study of solar physics. On the other hand considerable space has been devoted to the Tides and to Tidal Evolution, subjects but briefly treated in most astronomical works. Excerpt from The Tides and Kindred Phenomena in the Solar System: The Substance of Lectures Delivered in at the Lowell Institute, Boston, Massachusetts In 1897 I delivered a course of lectures on the Tides at the Lowell Institute in Boston Massachusetts and this book contains the substance of what I then said. The personal form of address appropriate to a lecture is I think, apt to be rather tiresome in a book, and I have therefore taken pains to eliminate all traces of the lecture from what I have written. A mathematical argument is, after all, only organized common sense, and it is well that men of science should not always expound their work to the few behind a veil of technical language, but should from time to time explain to a larger public the reasoning which lies behind their mathematical notation. To a man unversed in popular exposition it needs a great effort to shell away the apparatus of investigation and the technical mode of speech from the thing behind it, and I owe a debt of gratitude to Mr. Lowell, trustee of the Institute, for having afforded me the occasion for making that effort. Excerpt from The Sun: Its Constitution; Its Phenomena; Its Condition Here we have discrepancies ranging Over a difference of miles in the diameter of the Sun. What con elusions may be reached from the many careful Observations made dur ing the transit of Venus on the 6th of December, 1882, cannot now be anticipated. In the mean time, how ever, let the diameter of the Sun be regarded as miles. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Solar System, Illustrated by the Geoselenean The object of this arrangement is to give the true position of the earth's axis and to show not only day, night, the seasons, etc; but also the recession of the equinoxes and its effects. The number of the teeth of the wheel P is proportioned relatively to those of the wheels which ao tuate it, and for instruments of moderate size the wheels L and M may have one-fourth as many teeth as H has, while P has one tooth less than H, to obtain a slow rotation of the wheel P relatively to the sun. The small wheel S aids in obtaining this result by reversing the direction of the rotation of the wheel P. At the outer end of the sleeve J beyond the wheel M formerly men tinned are two wheels N and O, the former of which gears into the spur wheel Q, which rotates upon and independently of the inner sleeve to which the moon-carrier is attached. On the outer sleeve there is an oh lique circular plane forming a track for the roller of the moon-carrier. The revolution of the wheel Q with the oblique plane preserves the moon's orbit in its true position in reference to the orbit of the earth. The pro portion of the number of teeth in the wheels N and Q is such that Q makes about one-eighteenth of a revolution in the period of a year and thus shows the recession of the moon's nodes and regulates the phenomena of solar and lunar eclipses. The crown-wheel R is attached to the upper end of an inner sleeve and is revolved with it by means of the gear-wheel O, on the end of the sleeve J which wheel meshes into a horizontal wheel and this again into a pinion on the inner sleeve. These two wheels are under the wheel Q and are concealed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
