Excerpt from The Lincoln Ideals, His Personality and Principles as Reflected in His Own Words I was born Feb. 12, 1809, in Hardin County, Kentucky. My parents were both born in Virginia, of undistinguished families second families, perhaps I should say. My mother, who died in my tenth year, was of a family of the name of Hanks, some of whom now reside in Adams, and others in Macon counties, Illi nois. My paternal grandfather, Abraham Lincoln, emigrated from Rockingham County, Virginia, to Kentucky, about 1781 or 2, where, a year or two later, he was killed by indians, not in battle, but by stealth, when he was laboring to open a farm in the forest. His ancestors, who were quakers, went to Virginia from Berks County, Pennsylvania. An effort to identify them with the New England family of the same name ended in nothing more definite, than a similarity of Christian names in both families, such as Enoch, Levi, Mordecai, Solomon, Abraham, and the like. Excerpt from Lincoln's Own Stories For many years the editor has collected and studied the literature relating to Abraham Lincoln, and his interest has led to the preparation of a book which he has endeavored to make both authentic and significant. His purpose has been to select stories which embody truth and point, and to arrange them, as far as possible, consecutively, so that they may furnish continuous illustrations of the various stages of Lincoln's wonderful career. Various dubious and often maudlin tales which have been attributed to Lincoln have been omitted. While it would be impossible to claim that any collection is absolutely comprehensive, yet it is believed that the best and the essential Lincoln stories are assembled here in a manner which will serve as an outline biography in story form. In connection with this plan the bare facts of Lincoln's life may be restated helpfully. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln: His Words and Deeds The author has interviewed many persons who remember that saddest of all events in our nation's history. Without exception they all testify to the truthfulness Of the statement, and are able to tell exactly where they were at the time as well as to give in the minutest detail all the attendant circum stances. This is of itself a most impressive tribute to the memory Of the martyred President. It con elusively proves the large place which he occupied in the hearts of the common people of his day. People who knew Lincoln personally are now few in number. Even those who can remember that fateful fourteenth of April, 1865, when the whole world mourned, form a relatively small portion of the living. And it is feared that the younger gen cration are not as familiar with his life and char acter as they should be. Excerpt from What Lincoln Read The writer has been from youth to age a diligent and reverent student of any printed or written word throw ing light on the processes of slow yet steady growth through which Abraham Lincoln in his last years reached full mental and spiritual stature, and became the supreme American of his period. These processes are reflected in the present work which deals with what Lincoln read and pondered in a youth of few books and little schooling, and in his after years as lawyer and politician turned statesman. The record here set down cannot claim to be an exhaustive one, but it is as complete and accurate as long and careful searching of the sources now available to the student can make it. Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln To compress between the covers of a little book like this the whole story of Abraham Lincoln, to present within such limitations a life so epical, a character so original and yet so universal, is obviously impossible. It would be impossible, indeed, in a work of a score of volumes. The fascinating subject has already yielded a whole literature. In the List of Lincolniana in the Library of Congress, compiled by Mr. George Thomas Ritchie, there are already a thousand titles. Almost any phase of Lincoln's remarkable personality is worth a volume by itself. Mr. Hill, for instance, has written a charming book on "Lincoln the Lawyer," devoted in the main to what, in many respects, is the most interesting period of his life; namely, those years when he was on the old Eighth Circuit. Excerpt from The Education of Abraham Lincoln Mr. Lincoln himself made many political speeches; and he essayed several times, with varying success, to deliver popular lectures. Herndon says that on one occasion, when Lincoln was advertised to speak at Springfield, there were but two persons in his audience.42 Angle has shown this story to be apocryphal; but we can forgive Herndon his error, because it serves to recall a similar in eident in the career of Eli Perkins. On one occasion, as that humorist relates, he ploughed through a raging blizzard to a hall where he was to lecture, only to find that but one other man had ventured out. He said: My friend, to show my appreciation for your coming to hear me on such a night, I'm going to give my lecture in full, word for word, just as I would have given it if the hall had been filled with people. Well, all right, said his lone auditor; but I wish you would speak as rapidly as possible; I'm the janitor, and I'm anxious to get home. Excerpt from Life and Principles of Abraham Lincoln Over two centuries and a half have passed away since the ruler of any great Nation of the world has fallen by the murderous attack of an assassin; and for the first time in our history there is blood on the Presidential chair of our Republic. Death is almost always saddening. The passing away of some dear friend from our earthly sight for ever, fills the heart with sorrow. When it strikes down one who fills honorably a position of influence and power, as in the case of our two Presidents who died of disease in the White House, the sincerest grief is felt throughout the land. But when this affliction is aggravated by death coming through the hand of a murderer, it is not strange that the wave of we sweeps gloomily over a nation, which sits down to mourn in sackcloth, its pulses of business stilled, feeling in every individual heart as if there was one dead at our own hearth-stones.
