This book presents new research on the crucial role that imagination plays in contemporary philosophy of fiction. The first part of the book challenges the main paradigm set by Kendall Walton and Gregory Currie, according to which there is a necessary connection between fiction and a prescription that we engage imaginatively with its content. The contributors address the fundamental questions of how we can define fiction, and especially whether we can define fiction in terms of imagination. The second part focuses on a distinct but related question: can we point to some distinctive experiential features of our engagement with fiction? In the third part, the focus lies on the cognitive value of fiction and on the role that imagination plays in that respect. The chapters in this part discuss the cognitive value of fiction with respect to issues such as the training of the faculty of imagination, phenomenal experience, empathy, and the emotions. The Philosophy of Fiction will be of interest to scholars and advanced students working in aesthetics, philosophy of mind, epistemology, and literary studies. Chapter 13 of this book is available for free in PDF format as Open Access from the individual product page at www.routledge.com. It has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives 4.0 license.

Philosophy as Fiction seeks to account for the peculiar power of philosophical literature by taking as its case study the paradigmatic generic hybrid of the twentieth century, Marcel Proust's In Search of Lost Time. At once philosophical--in that it presents claims, and even deploys arguments concerning such traditionally philosophical issues as knowledge, self-deception, selfhood, love, friendship, and art--and literary, in that its situations are imaginary and its stylization inescapably prominent, Proust's novel presents us with a conundrum. How should it be read? Can the two discursive structures co-exist, or must philosophy inevitably undermine literature (by sapping the narrative of its vitality) and literature undermine philosophy (by placing its claims in the mouth of an often unreliable narrator)? In the case of Proust at least, the result is greater than the sum of its parts. Not only can a coherent, distinctive philosophical system be extracted from the Recherche, once the narrator's periodic waywardness is taken into account; not only does a powerfully original style pervade its every nook, overtly reinforcing some theories and covertly exemplifying others; but aspects of the philosophy also serve literary ends, contributing more to character than to conceptual framework. What is more, aspects of the aesthetics serve philosophical ends, enabling a reader to engage in an active manner with an alternative art of living. Unlike the "essay" Proust might have written, his novel grants us the opportunity to use it as a practice ground for cooperation among our faculties, for the careful sifting of memories, for the complex procedures involved in self-fashioning, and for the related art of self-deception. It is only because the narrator's insights do not always add up--a weakness, so long as one treats the novel as a straightforward treatise--that it can produce its training effect, a feature that turns out to be its ultimate strength.

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1890 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XIII. ART, MORALS, AND SCIENCE. It is indispensable to a clear comprehension of the theory of art that we keep before us the truth, already fully developed in earlier pages, that essentially all art is creation. This is as true of what is termed reproductive or imitative art as it is of any other. A work of art is a product of the constructive power of the human mind, introduced as a new thing into the objective world. As such it is something done in realization of an ideal. In appreciating the work it is necessary for the observer to understand to some degree the ideal. He must be able to see what the artist had in mind in order to judge of the resultant product. If, then, it be well done, according to an ideal apprehended by the criticising mind, there is certainly aroused an aesthetic pleasure, greater or less according to the degree of excellence. This last may depend upon a variety of causes, in all of which, however, the difficulty of the achievement is an important element. That which the most of men cannot do elicits admiration; much more that which artists generally are unable to achieve. The reader will remember the remark of Arreat, before quoted, to the effect that the true aesthetic idea in work is that of difficulty conquered, and which seems to have been conquered freely, or for the sake of the conquest. Wherever this appears an aesthetic emotion is produced, independently of the subject-matter of the work itself. We say: Here is a fine thing, showing great power and genius. It is quite true, therefore, that an artistic creation may give pleasure in itself, because it is aesthetic, irrespective of any scientific or moral value. In order, however, to get at the bottom of the matter, the question must be asked: What...

With the intrigue of a psychological thriller, Camus's masterpiece gives us the story of an ordinary man unwittingly drawn into a senseless murder on an Algerian beach. Behind the intrigue, Camus explores what he termed "the nakedness of man faced with the absurd" and describes the condition of reckless alienation and spiritual exhaustion that characterized so much of twentieth-century life. First published in 1946; now in translation by Matthew Ward.

"In this thesis I explore a style of fiction called metafiction and what it contributes to philosophical debates surrounding the question of truth in fiction. Metafiction is a piece of literature, play, or film which reflects on the nature of fiction from within the fictional form. Metafiction gained popularity in the 1960s with the rise of postmodernism and has had a substantial amount of literature dedicated to it from literary critics. It generally remains outside of philosophical discourse, aside from a recent conference which was held in April 2011 at the University of Cambridge. This conference shows that metafiction and philosophy do have important links which I hope to explore. I argue that metafiction is not as disconnected from truth and reality as many theorists claim. Metafiction not only reveals truths about the nature of fiction and postmodern reality but it also contributes to debates in the philosophy of art. Metafiction provides insights into the paradox of fiction and the nature of propositional truth in fiction, revealing that it is possible to be emotionally engaged in fiction whilst being aware of its fictionality, and that a theory of truth in fiction needs to account for paradoxical truths. I conclude with a discussion of how fiction can be philosophical and the way in which metafiction embodies philosophical ideas in the philosophy of literature through its self-reflexive form".

Excerpt from The Philosophy of Fiction in Literature: An Essay When I have finished "Romola," by George Eliot, the first and most obvious thing to be noted upon reflection is that the book has interested me sufficiently to cause me to read it through. If, then, encouraged by this experience, and believing a novel to be a novel, I take up "Sir Charles Grandison," I may find, after reading a portion, that I grow tired, lay the book down, and refuse to recur to it. I am bored, and the thought of continuing is irksome. Clearly, then, all tales are not interesting. Again, I am led to the perusal of M.Zola's "La Terre." My attention is held; I am presently shocked, then disgusted. I throw the pamphlet into the fire and open the windows to air the room. Thinking About Stories written by Samuel Lebens and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-10-31 with Philosophy categories.

Thinking About Stories is a fun and thought-provoking introduction to philosophical questions about narrative fiction in its many forms, from highbrow literature to pulp fiction to the latest shows on Netflix. Written by philosophers Samuel Lebens and Tatjana von Solodkoff, it engages with fundamental questions about fiction, such as: What is it? What does it give us? Does a story need a narrator? And why do sad stories make us cry if we know they aren’t real? The format of the book emulates a lively, verbal exchange: each chapter has only one author while the other appears spontaneously in dialogues in the text along the way, raising questions and voicing criticisms, and inviting responses from their co-author. This unique format allows readers to feel like they are a part of the conversation about the philosophical foundations of some of the fictions in their own lives. Key Features Draws on a wide range of types of narrative fiction, from Harry Potter to Breakfast of Champions to Parks and Recreation. Explores how fiction, despite its detachment from truth, is often best able to teach us important things about the world in which we live. Concludes by asking in the final chapter whether we all might be fictions. Includes bibliographies and suggested reading lists in each chapter.
