Essay from the year 2018 in the subject Philosophy - Miscellaneous, grade: 60, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, course: BA Politics, language: English, abstract: The enlightenment period otherwise known as the age of reason was an era or rather an academic movement where political thinkers started to question traditional authority. The era of enlightenment dominated European countries from the 18th century. The primary idea of the enlightenment period was human reasoning as the source of authority and legitimacy. This led to the state of individuals being free from oppressive restrictions imposed by the state, the separation of the state from the church as well as the idea of individual freedom and ethical behaviour. The period of enlightenment was about questioning human rationality and the general belief in human progress, as a result the French and American revolution were born of the enlightenment period. This essay is aimed at looking into the ideas of one of the early enlightenment philosophers Immanuel Kant.

The Critique of Practical Reason is the second of Immanuel Kant's three critiques. It follows on from Kant's Critique of Pure Reason and deals with his moral philosophy. The second Critique exercised a decisive influence over the subsequent development of the field of ethics and moral philosophy, beginning with Johann Gottlieb Fichte's Doctrine of Science and becoming, during the 20th century, the principal reference point for deontological moral philosophy. Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) was a German philosopher, who, according to the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy is "the central figure of modern philosophy." Kant argued that fundamental concepts of the human mind structure human experience, that reason is the source of morality, that aesthetics arises from a faculty of disinterested judgment, that space and time are forms of our understanding, and that the world as it is "in-itself" is unknowable. Kant took himself to have effected a Copernican revolution in philosophy, akin to Copernicus' reversal of the age-old belief that the sun revolved around the earth.

Critique of Judgement Immanuel Kant - In the Critique of Judgement (1790) Kant offers a penetrating analysis of our experience of the beautiful and the sublime, discussing the objectivity of taste, aesthetic disinterestedness, the relation of art and nature, the role of imagination, genius and originality, the limits of representation and the connection between morality and the aesthetic. He also investigates the validity of our judgements concerning the apparent purposiveness of nature with respect to the highest interests of reason and enlightenment. The work profoundly influenced the artists and writers of the classical and romantic period and the philosophy of Hegel and Schelling. It has remained a central point of reference from Schopenhauer and Nietzsche through to phenomenology, hermeneutics, the Frankfurt School, analytical aesthetics and contemporary critical theory.

Many contemporaries criticized him for smashing the Age of Reason. Goethe, however, remarked that reading a page of Immanuel Kant was like entering a bright and well-lighted room: The great eighteenth-century philosopher illuminated everything he ever pondered. The twelve essays in this volume reveal Kant's towering importance as an ethical and social thinker as well as his enduring influence on the shape of philosophy. Included are excerpts fromDreams of a Visionary, Prolegomena to Every Future Metaphysics, Metaphysical Foundations of Morals, Critique of Judgement, andEternal Peace. As Professor Friedrich writes in his introduction to this volume: "The problem of freedom, the freedom of the human personality to unfold and fulfill its higher destiny, is the central issue of all of Kant's philosophizing."

18th century Prussia was steeped in tradition. Religion was the prime means by which people derived what it meant to live a good life. Just then, a man arose who advocated the use of human reason to discern right from wrong. He coined the term "Categorical Imperative" to denote the concept of developing one's own faculty of reason to devise universal moral codes of conduct. With this, he essentially and inextricably bound morality with reason. This book expounds upon the life and works of Immanuel Kant. The influences of Kant's early years profoundly impacted him to deviate from the confines of dogma and challenge a mechanistic and deterministic view of existence. Yet, his aspiration to substantiate a non-deterministic causality (amid other areas) led him to delve within the deepest recesses of the world as we know it. He is further credited with unifying the concepts of a priori (reasoned) knowledge and a posteriori (experiential) knowledge thus forming a consilience between empiricism and moral conduct. Come and meet the man who profoundly influenced the intellectual destiny of mankind. Here's a preview of what you'll discover in this book: Immanuel Kant's early childhood, family life, and education The young man as a passionate philosopher The genius thinker and the people who influenced him The beginning of his study in the nature of reason His exposition and treatise governing moral code using reason Development of the social contract and governance of the political state Kant's final years and the legacy that he left behind ..... And much more! The Age of Enlightenment was a critical evolutionary period in human history. Kant stipulated that free will lead humans to formulate social and political systems that simultaneously rely on and propagate universal law. This constituted nothing short of humanity's intellectual rebirth and defines man as we currently know him. This fascinating book will leave you inspired with a sense of awe at the grandeur of what Immanuel Kant has contributed to our progress as a species. The Critique of Pure Reason is one of the most influential works in the history of philosophy and marks a turning point and the beginning of modern philosophy. Also referred to as Kant's "first critique," it was followed by the Critique of Practical Reason and by the Critique of Judgment. In the preface to the first edition, Kant explains what he means by a critique of pure reason: "I do not mean by this a critique of books and systems, but of the faculty of reason in general, in respect of all knowledge after which it may strive independently of all experience." Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) was a German philosopher, who, according to the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy is "the central figure of modern philosophy." Kant argued that fundamental concepts of the human mind structure human experience, that reason is the source of morality, that aesthetics arises from a faculty of disinterested judgment, that space and time are forms of our understanding, and that the world as it is "in-itself" is unknowable.
