The history of ancient times abounds in accounts of prodigies and manifestations of supernatural power, which the almost unanimous judgment of the modern world has stamped as pure fiction. The question, however, how such accounts found their way into records purporting to be authentic, received as such by the age that produced them, and preserve and handed down as such to our own times, has, perhaps, never been quite satisfactorily answered. These records are all we have to depend on for our knowledge of the times from which they date, or of which they treat. If their authority be disallowed, past ages become a blank to us. It is a point of some interest, therefore, to account for the presence, in them, of so much that seems incredible, and to show how that into which the apparently fabulous enters in so large a proportion, can yet be received, in the main, as true history. It is no solution of this difficulty to say, that antiquity was credulous, that it exercised no judgment upon the stories to which it gave currency, and believed, without inquiry, things the most improbable and absurd. If this be so, of what value is ancient history at all? Who would give anything for the testimony of those who are incapable of discriminating between what is rational and what is absurd, to whom the impossibility of a matter forms no ground for doubting its truth? In our courts of justice, what credit would a witness meet with, half of whose evidence was essentially incredible? Would not the other half go for nothing, merely on the score of its suspicious association, however credible in itself? lf we are to flatter ourselves that we know anything about the early past, we cannot be indifferent to the character of its historians, whether for veracity or for judgment, and if we find in their recitals many things to which we feel that we cannot yield credence, we are the more interested in the inquiry how these things won credence from them. In this inquiry, M. Salverte comes to our aid, and, with much ingenuity, endeavours to show that the great bulk of what ancient writers hand down to us as prodigy or miracle, instead of being mere fable, is capable of explanation on grounds intelligible to the present age, and thus that history, as far as these things are concerned, may be received as true in its narrative of facts, though it be often in error in the view it takes of the nature of the facts narrated. M. Salverte believes that a great mass of scientific knowledge was treasured up from a very early period in the temples of the heathen world, and even ventures on the bold conjecture, that many of the most illustrious discoveries in the domain of physics....-The University Magazine: A Literary and Philosophic Review

The author, Mr. Salverte, was an avocat du roi under the old régime, a civil engineer under the empire, and a consistent friend of the people; a member of the Chambers from the 5th district of Paris, and one of the few who have resisted the corrupting influence of the most corrupt government of Europe In the volumes before us, he has produced a work of great erudition and boundless research, in which he develops a theory which maintains that the prodigies and miracles related by the ancients, are to be ascribed to the results of a state of science far more advanced than has in modern times been admitted; that this science was in the hands of the priesthood, and by them used in the perpetuation of their hierarchy. The translator, in the profundity of his wisdom, has omitted the portions tending to elucidate the miracles of the Bible. For what reason we do not see. If the truth of the revelations cannot vindicate itself against the theories of Mr. Salverte, then it may be well to suppress the latter. Dr. Thompson seems to have greater faith in Mr. Salverte than in the Scriptures, however. The great work of Mr. Salverte establishes many points in the history of the sciences that have been heretofore surrounded with mists, and is full of intense interest. He avows the theory which guided him to be as follows: -- "1st. When the improbability of a fact is the chief objection to the belief in its reality, the evidence which attests it regains all its value, if the improbability be proved to be only apparent. Can a similar test be applied with success to the greater part of the prodigies and miracles related by the ancients It is more reasonable to admit the truth of the facts, and the accuracy of their explanation -- than to condemn as impostures those recitals of which modern discoveries have frequently demonstrated the truth. "2d. It is an incontestable fact, that anciently science -- and more especially that science which was confined to the temples -- was enveloped in a thick veil to conceal it from the eyes of the vulgar; and that it was employed to produce wonderful works, fitted to subdue the obstinacy and credulity of the people, is a supposition so natural, that it will be difficult to oppose it -- at least by any sound reasons. In the marvelous recitals which have been handed down to our times, some of this mystical learning may be discovered; and in prosecuting the research we endeavor to complete the history of the science of mankind. --The U.S. Democratic Review, Volume 20

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1847 edition. Excerpt: ... "The seven vowels glorify me, the great and immortal God, the unwearied Father of all things." Is it necessary to call to mind that, in divination, Serapis stood as one of the emblems of the solar system, and that Pliny assigns to Serapis the temple with which the statue of Memnon was consecrated? The mystery attached to this mode of adoration explains the application to the invocations of the epithet ineffable, as well as the silence which Eucrates observes respecting the substance of the oracle in seven lines which he pretends to have heard. Thus, in the religion of the Hindoos, of the Parsees, and even of Islam, certain syllables are consecrated, the pronunciation of which is equivalent to a prayer, and whose sacred efficacy must not be revealed. Whatever weight we may attach or refuse to these conjectures with regard to particular occasions, it may be readily admitted that, Where the operations of the thaumaturgists were unrestrained by enlightened curiosity, the machinery employed for animating an automaton, or perhaps mere ventriloquism, would suffice to produce the words and the oracles attributed to Memnon. It is not so easy to explain the repetition of the apparent miracle every morning. The idea of an artifice that might lend its aid to the colossus appears to have struck Strabo. His language is that of a man who is on his guard respecting any deception that might be practiced on him, rather than to admit that the sound could really issue from the stone. Otherwise, he adduces no fact in support of his conjecture. The term of which Juvenal makes use appears to indicate that, in his opinion, the miracle was the result of magical art, that is to say, of an ingenious and concealed mechanism. Eustathiust positively affirms it, as...
