This book is a succinct guide to Søren Kierkegaard’s contribution to educational thought. Kierkegaard is not usually known as an educational thinker, but the book shows how his key notions and ideas are nevertheless highly relevant to educational theory and practice. It places them within the context of Kierkegaard’s philosophy and the philosophy of his time, while also exploring their significance to issues of contemporary concern, like the question of how far education should aim at fostering useful skills or support more ambitious goals. The central topics are Kierkegaard’s diagnosis of the limitations of objective knowledge and his corresponding emphasis on know-how, personal appropriation and subjective attitude; his analysis of more or less successful forms of self-realization; his ideas about fostering personal development through “indirect communication” and dialogue; and the elements, strengths and shortcomings of the ideal of self-cultivation (German Bildung).

Kierkegaard on Dialogical Education: Vulnerable Freedom examines a unique conception of freedom that underscores the productive role of human vulnerability, as found in the work of Søren Kierkegaard. Anna Strelis Söderquist uncovers Kierkegaard’s method of “indirect communication” as a formative and dialogical approach to education that guides a person in becoming not only free and independent, but also receptive and empathetic. This approach bestows upon a human being the dignity that comes from being both capable and humble. It emphasizes the need for trust and courage alike in our dialogical relations, freeing us to receive and respond to the other both in our need and through our own choosing. Freedom’s secret is that it is at the same time self-empowered and vulnerable, self-giving and receptive, independent and dependent. Kierkegaard’s method, in both form and content, hinges upon the narrativity of human experience. No human being is immune to the seductive force of stories. Kierkegaard recognizes the power of a story to captivate and to change us, to empower and to humble us, and he makes use of them as formative teachers with whom we enter into dialogue. Through its examination of indirect formation in Kierkegaard through poetry and storytelling, Kierkegaard on Dialogical Education explores the reaches and limits of narrative imagination and inquires into the dialogical and narrative struggle inherent in the formation of identity. This book will be of interest to philosophers and educators, as well as those who meet at the crossroads of philosophy, education, and art.

Existentialism represents a protest against the rationalism of traditional philosophy, against misleading notions of the bourgeois culture, and the dehumanizing values of industrial civilization. Since alienation, loneliness and self-estrangement constitute threats to human personality in the modern world, existential thought has viewed as its cardinal concerns a quest for subjective truth, a reaction against the ‘negation of Being’ and a perennial search for freedom. From the ancient Greek philosopher, Socrates, to the twentieth century French philosopher, Jean Paul Sartre, and other thinkers have dealt with this tragic sense of ontological reality - the human situation within a comic context The book put forward is the beginning of an attempt to revive existentialism by addressing these issues. The idea is eventually to present a conception of personhood that is recognizably existentialist, or similar to that presented by writers like Kierkegaard, Heidegger, Jaspers, and Sartre in certain fundamental ways, but that takes into account the last twenty years of developments in the many different areas of philosophy that directly affect our understanding of what it is to be a person. The result will hopefully be a more ‘sophisticated’ existentialist theory of personhood that can be presented in contemporary terms as a serious challenge to current dogmas in metaphysics and moral theory, and be defended against the ascendant naturalistic, rationalistic, or pragmatist alternatives.

With education and work being two chief and influential elements in modern society, it is important to understand and explore their purpose, contributions and how they are impacted by other factors such as gender. It is the task of Philosophy to investigate these all-important questions, as it is a field of study in which people question and create theories about the nature of reality. Philosophers concern themselves with more than just the fundamental and mysterious topics as whether or not God(s) exist. The fundamental method of western philosophy is the use of reasoning to evaluate arguments. As such, this book takes a philosophical approach to examining these areas by including arguments from philosophers such as Plato, Aristotle, Augustine, Thomas Aquinas, John Dewey, Soren Aabye Kierkegaard and Jean-Paul Sartre; who have all explored the topic of education and work.

The School of Life offers radical ways to help us raid the treasure trove of human knowledge' Independent on Sunday Soren Kierkegaard was a Danish philosopher, theologian, literary stylist and social critic. A famously fierce critic of the idealist thinkers of his time, he is regarded as the first existentialist philosopher. Here you will find insights from his greatest works. The Life Lessons series from The School of Life takes a great thinker and highlights those ideas most relevant to ordinary, everyday dilemmas. These books emphasize ways in which wise voices from the past have urgently important and inspiring things to tell us. 'thoroughly welcoming and approachable ... [Robert Ferguson] communicates strongly his enthusiams, indeed his love, for this Manichean of the north, and writes of him beautifully ... If the six books in the Life Lessons series can teach even a few readers to pay passionate heed to the world - to notice things - they will have been an unquestionable success' John Banville, Prospect 'there is a good deal to be learned from these little primers' Observer
