In this volume, I have given attention to what I consider to be some of the central problems and topics in the philosophical thought of SjiSren Kierkegaard. Some of the chapters have been previously publish ed but were revised for their appearance here. Others were written expressly for this book. I have tried to focus on issues which have not been customarily dealt with or emphasized in the scholarship on Kierkegaard with the exception of the writings of David Swenson and Paul L. Holmer to which (and to whom) I am greatly indebted. Some of the positions for which I have argued in this volume (especially in Chapters IV and V) may be controversial. I am grateful to all those who enabled me to carry out or influenced me in my studies of Kierkegaard or who assisted with regard to the research for or preparation of this volume. Among these are: Professors Paul L. Holmer, F. Arthur Jacobson, and Dennis A. Rohatyn; Dean Wallace A. Russell and Vice President Daniel J. Zaffarano of Iowa State University.

Monographs on philosophers multiply daily but on occasion the question of why a particular philosopher matters. If we stop thinking about them by asking why, then will they cease to exist? When Mercer University Press opened its doors more than thirty years ago, it committed itself to religious studies in general, and to several thinkers. One of those was Soslash;ren Kierkegaard. Now, as the Press concludes a major publishing event with the completion of the International Kierkegaard Commentary, it seeks to honor the only series editor it has known: Robert Perkins. The method of this honor is by asking Why Kierkegaard Matters. The leading Kierkegaard scholars have contributed essays that range from the very personal and memoir-esque to the academic and analytical. As a result, this festshcrift is not only a book to honor an extraordinary editor, but is in it's own right a major contribution to the assessment of the importance of Kierkegaard. Written with the general reader in mind, this collection will prove useful by both scholar and student, and will lead the general reader to encounter one of the most original Christian philosophers in the history of the world.

Subjectivity And Religious Truth In The Philosophy Of S Ren Kierkegaard written by Merigala Gabriel and has been published by Mercer University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010 with Philosophy categories.

Merigala Gabriel's main objective is to thoroughly examine subjective truth, which is the core concept in Kierkegaard's philosophy. Here Gabriel contrast subjective truth with objective truth in order to highlight the significance of subjective truth in its religious context and to bring out the inadequacy of objective truth. The principle of absolute paradox connected with the subjective truth is also discussed. The study also aims to present a detailed analysis of the aesthetic, ethical, and religious stages that represent existential dialectic, to examine their interrelationship and to show how the religious mode of existence is the key to genuineness in real existence. Care is taken to examine the disjunction between reason and faith: to bring out the importance of "faith" in Christianity and to show the limitations of science as far as Christianity is concerned. Gabriel also addresses the relation between God and Man. Finally, the importance of Kierkegaard's thought and his contribution to the development of "subjectivity and religious truth" are outlined.

This volume focuses on Søren Kierkegaard as a theologian of the gospel of God's grace, rather than as the “Father of Existentialism.” In so doing, it illuminates his vision of humans as relational beings who find fulfillment in the loving embrace of God with us (thus making him a would-be critic of later secular forms of “Existentialism”).

Søren Kierkegaard is simultaneously one of the most obscure philosophers of the Western world and one of the most influential. His writings have influenced atheists and faithful alike. Yet there is still widespread disagreement on many of the most important aspects of his thought. Kierkegaard was deliberately obscure in his writings, forcing the reader to interpret and reflect as Socrates did with incessant questioning. But at the same time that Kierkegaard was producing his esoteric, pseudonymous philosophical writings, he was also producing simpler, direct religious writings. Kierkegaard always claimed that he was, despite appearances, a religious writer. This important book accepts that claim and tests it. By using Kierkegaard's direct writings as he suggests, as the key to understanding the more obscure, indirect works, W. Glenn Kirkconnell aims to develop a coherent understanding of Kierkegaard's authorship and his theories.
