Edmund Burke (1730–1797) was a friend and advocate of America during the political crisis of the 1760s and the 1770s, and he spoke out eloquently and forcefully in defense of the rights of the colonial subjects of the British empire – in America, Ireland and India alike. However, he is often best remembered for his extremely critical Reflections on the Revolution in France. The present volume is based on classic Burke, including his most famous writings and speeches on the American Crisis. Though his efforts at conciliation with the American colonies ultimately failed, Burke is widely remembered, studied and venerated by liberal and conservative thinkers alike, for his elucidation and criticism of the excesses of empire and political excesses generally. Irish-born, Burke made his career as a British Whig statesman and Member of Parliament, but he was also a powerful writer of philosophical works in high literary style. In the present volume, Burke’s ideas, ideals and arguments are explored and set in their original historical and political context. The volume places the reader in a position to understand the similarities and contrasts between the political philosophy of the Whig ascendancy in British politics and the republican political philosophy of the American founders. What comes to the fore is Burke’s twin emphasis on continuity and justice, the anti-rationalism of his opposition to directly applying abstract political theory to policy decisions, the pluralism of peoples and public mores within the empire, the crucial roles of political representation in good government, and the fundamental importance of the consent of the governed. Was Burke a friend or a foe of revolution? Was he a “liberal” or a “conservative”? To what degree did he accept the political ideals of the American founders? How could he both defend the American protests and reject the claims of the French Revolution? Thomas Jefferson’s “Summary View of the Rights of British America” is included in the volume for comparison and contrast. This book presents a deeper understanding of Burke’s political thought by exploring the similarities and contrasts with founding ideals of America’s republican tradition.

In the American colonies the origin of political power structures and government were thought to be in contractual arrangements. Therefore, the idea of John Locke that it’s the people’s decision to enter into a society by a social contract was estimated by many colonists to be also the concept of government their ancestors had chosen to settle down in the New World. Even some historians saw the “intellectual roots of resistance in the “country” [...] as part and parcel of the Lockean Enlightenment”. So, one can conclude that Locke did have a great influence. Furthermore, the adaptation of Locke’s ideas in the revolutionary documents showed that his philosophy served as justification for the colonists and with that the independence was justified, too.

America's Revolutionary Mind is the first major reinterpretation of the American Revolution since the publication of Bernard Bailyn's The Ideological Origins of the American Revolution and Gordon S. Wood's The Creation of the American Republic. The purpose of this book is twofold: first, to elucidate the logic, principles, and significance of the Declaration of Independence as the embodiment of the American mind; and, second, to shed light on what John Adams once called the "real American Revolution"; that is, the moral revolution that occurred in the minds of the people in the fifteen years before 1776. The Declaration is used here as an ideological road map by which to chart the intellectual and moral terrain traveled by American Revolutionaries as they searched for new moral principles to deal with the changed political circumstances of the 1760s and early 1770s. This volume identifies and analyzes the modes of reasoning, the patterns of thought, and the new moral and political principles that served American Revolutionaries first in their intellectual battle with Great Britain before 1776 and then in their attempt to create new Revolutionary societies after 1776. The book reconstructs what amounts to a near-unified system of thought—what Thomas Jefferson called an “American mind” or what I call “America’s Revolutionary mind.” This American mind was, I argue, united in its fealty to a common philosophy that was expressed in the Declaration and launched with the words, “We hold these truths to be self-evident.”

In the Cause of Humanity is a thorough philosophical analysis of the American Revolution. The fusion of these two markets into a coherent whole provides the secure foundation for America's political economy in the twenty-first century. Festival America: A yearly festival in which American values and culture are portrayed in ritual, song, dance, and drama, all chosen by the people. This art would also be presented to jurors in courts of common reason during the time they are making their fateful political decisions. Based on the Athenian model, Festival America would instill the powerful and humane effect of the arts directly into the heart of the democratic process. Juried democracies: Governments in which the laws have the continuing, informed consent of the people, as determined by courts of common reason. Moving from the rule of persons to the rule of law was a radical improvement in the organization of societies, moving on to the rule of juried law will be a no less revolutionary change. Perfectionist aspirations: Today, perfectionist aspirations, comparable to those expressed by Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Madison, Wilson, and other eighteenth-century figures, are almost completely unknown. Yet they are indispensable to inspire and sustain the deep political reforms that America so desperately needs. In the Cause of Humanity offers a practical program to attain the transcendent goal of the American Revolution: a perpetually improving union of material and moral prosperity.
