We live in an age in which expressive, informational, and technological subject matter are becoming increasingly important. Intellectual property is the primary means by which the law seeks to regulate such subject matter. It aims to promote innovation and creativity, and in doing so to support solutions to global environmental and health problems, as well as freedom of expression and democracy. It also seeks to stimulate economic growth and competition, accounting for its centrality to EU Internal Market and international trade and development policies. Additionally, it is of enormous and increasing importance to business. As a result there is a substantial and ever-growing interest in intellectual property law across all spheres of industry and social policy, including an interest in its legal principles, its social and normative foundations, and its place and operation in the political economy. This handbook written by leading academics and practitioners from the field of intellectual property law, and suitable for both a specialist legal readership and an intelligent but non-specialist legal and non-legal readership, provides a comprehensive account of the following areas: - The foundations of IP law, including its emergence and development in different jurisdictions and regions; - The substantive rules and principles of IP; and - Important issues arising from the existence and operation of IP in the political economy.

Edgar Holden, M.D., of Newark: Provincial Physician on a National Stage is a study of medicine and health in Essex County, New Jersey, and its largest city, Newark, in the decades following the Civil War. Th e book is structured around the multifaceted career of Edgar Holden, a Newark physician who transcended the provinciality that characterized Essex County?s medical community and institutions. Th e author demonstrates how institution building and new paradigms of medical authority funneled from burgeoning urban medical centers into the provincial and sluggish medical landscape of northern New Jersey. Th e lack of a medical school within the state stymied the intellectual and professional ferment that the best nineteenth-century American medical schools attracted and fostered. New York City, with its medical institutions and elite practitioners cast a giant shadow over northern New Jersey, which consequently has been somewhat neglected by historians of medicine. An exploration of this lively community of welltrained practitioners, fl edgling institutions, and ailing citizens sheds light on similar medical communities that found themselves importing?but rarely exporting?medical knowledge and expertise.

Scholars working at the intersection of African-American history and the history of technology are redefining the idea of technology to include the work of the skilled artisan and the ingenuity of the self-taught inventor. Although denied access through most of American history to many new technologies and to the privileged education of the engineer, African-Americans have been engaged with a range of technologies, as makers and as users, since the colonial era. A Hammer in Their Hands (the title comes from the famous song about John Henry, "the steel-driving man" who beat the steam drill) collects newspaper and magazine articles, advertisements for runaway slaves, letters, folklore, excerpts from biography and fiction, legal patents, protest pamphlets, and other primary sources to document the technological achievements of African-Americans. Included in this rich and varied collection are a letter from Cotton Mather describing an early method of smallpox inoculation brought from Africa by a slave; selections from Frederick Douglass's autobiography and Uncle Tom's Cabin; the Confederate Patent Act, which barred slaves from holding patents; articles from 1904 by Booker T. Washington and W. E. B. DuBois, debating the issue of industrial education for African-Americans; a 1924 article from Negro World, "Automobiles and Jim Crow Regulations"; a photograph of an all-black World War II combat squadron; and a 1998 presidential executive order on environmental justice. A Hammer in Their Hands and its companion volume of essays, Technology and the African-American Experience (MIT Press, 2004) will be essential references in an emerging area of study.

To the extent that particular medical specialists in distinct institutions and cultures saw different populations of such infants, they were bound to interpret the incubator's purpose differently. The factors of institutional, professional, and national context - along with that of gender - were of special importance in shaping physicians' attitudes.

Axioms For The Inventor written by Charles C. Rayburn and has been published by Xlibris Corporation this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-08-04 with Technology & Engineering categories.

What is an invention? Are all inventions patented? Is an inventor someone who has patents issued? How are potential inventors identified? Industrial managers are constantly wondering how their company can build a better product and upstage their competition. They seek inventions. They wonder if there are fledgling inventors in their midst just waiting to receive that flash, that lightning bolt which will forever alter the future of mankind. During the past thirty-five years, Ive worked as an industrial manager and inventor averaging just over two US patents per year. My failures outnumber my successes. Fortunately, my successes have far more than subsidized my failures. My bosses have been tops, always supportive, willing to carry me through the lean times, hoping that I will hit a home run. The purpose of this writing is to assure the reader that we are all inventors. There are no proven scales for measuring the potential for invention. Is there a test for babies to indicate who will accumulate wealth over their lifetime? Probably not. The same is true for inventing. Wealth accumulation and successful inventing are each directed by interest, effort, and opportunity. My interests and efforts were about average, but my opportunities were abundant. For easy reading, I have condensed various points, printing them in bold type and underlining. Some commentary accompanies each to explain the inclusion of the bold statement. Finally, let me assure you that inventing is a game. It is show biz, technology, law, marketing, manufacturing, internationalism, and science rolled into one. If one has a streak of luck, it can be financially rewarding and personally satisfying.
