The contents of this volume represent most of the papers presented either orally or as posters at the international conference held in Les rd th Arcs, Savoie, from June 29 to July 3 1987. The declared objective of the conference was to bring together specialists working in various fields, both academic and applied, to examine the state of our under standing of the physics of amorphous sioz from the point of view of its structure, defects (both intrinsic and extrinsic), its ability to trans port current and to trap charges, its sensitivity to irradiation, etc. For this reason, the proceedings is divided, as was the conference schedule, into a number of sections starting from a rather academic viewpoint of the internal structure of idealized Si0 and progressing 2 towards subjects of increasing technological importance such as charge transport and trapping and breakdown in thin films. The proceedings terminates with a section on novel applications of amorphous SiOz and in particular, buried oxide layers formed by ion implantation. Although every effort was made at the conference to ensure that each presentation occured in its most obvious session, in editing the proceedings we have taken the liberty of changing the order where it seems that a paper was in fact more appropriate to an alternative section. In any event, because of the natural overlap of subjects, many papers could have been suitably placed in several different sections.

This thesis investigates the behavior of two candidate materials (a-SiO2 and MgO) for applications in fusion (e.g., the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor ITER) and Generation IV fission reactors. Both parts of the thesis – the development of the ionoluminescence technique and the study of the ion-irradiation effects on both materials – are highly relevant for the fields of the ion-beam analysis techniques and irradiation damage in materials. The research presented determines the microstructural changes at different length scales in these materials under ion irradiation. In particular, it studies the effect of the irradiation temperature using several advanced characterization techniques. It also provides much-needed insights into the use of these materials at elevated temperatures. Further, it discusses the development of the ion-beam-induced luminescence technique in different research facilities around the globe, a powerful in situ spectroscopic characterization method that until now was little known. Thanks to its relevance, rigorosity and quality, this thesis has received twoprestigious awards in Spain and France.

This proceedings volume contains the contributions of the speakers who attended the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on "Perspectives, Science and Technologies for Novel Silicon on Insulator Devices" held at the Sanatorium Pushcha OLema, Kyiv, th Ukraine from It" to 15 October 1998. This meeting was the second NATO Silicon on Insulator (SOl) Workshop to be held in st the Ukraine where the first meeting (Gurzuf, Crimea, 1 to 4th November 1994) focussed upon the physical and technical problems to be addressed in order to exploit the advantages of incorporating SOl materials in device and sensor technologies. On this occasion emphasis was placed upon firstly, promoting the use of SOl substrates for a range of novel device and circuit applications and secondly, addressing the economic issues of incorporating SOl processing technologies and device technologies within the framework of the resources available within the laboratories and factories of the Newly Independent States (NIS). The primary goal of both workshops has been the breaking of the barriers that inhibit closer collaboration between scientists and engineers in the NATO countries and the NIS. Indeed, it was a pleasure for attendees at the first meeting to renew acquaintances and for the first time attendees to make new contacts and enjoy the warm hospitality offered by our hosts in Kyiv. An outcome was the forging of new links and concrete proposals for future collaborations.

A laboratory-scale reactor and a novel method for the atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition (APCVD) of SiO2-x films are developed. The deposited films are investigated to synthesize heterogeneously upon the substrate surface with the elimination of the so-called gas-phase reaction, hence preventing parasitic oxide particles upon the substrate surface and the reactor inner walls. The films are extensively inspected in terms of chemical and optical properties and utilized for crystalline silicon solar cell applications. Simple reactor design with low safety measures, a wide range of deposition rates, high film resilience, and stability for the intended applications are successfully achieved. The newly developed APCVD SiO2-x is proven to protect the Si wafer surface against texturing in alkaline and acidic solutions. Electroplated metallization schemes of heterojunction and passivated emitter rear contact solar cells are examined with the use of the SiO2-x as a masking layer in the grid electrode-free area.

In Physical and Technical Problems of SOI Structures and Devices, specialists in silicon-on-insulator technology from both East and West meet for the first time, giving the reader the chance to become acquainted with work from the former Soviet Union, hitherto only available in Russian and barely available to western scientists. Keynote lectures and state-of-the-art presentations give a wide-ranging panorama of the challenges posed by SOI materials and devices, material fabrication techniques, characterisation, device and circuit issues.

Volume 29 of Reviews in Mineralogy provides an updated silica review which focuses on the most recent developments. This book describes the crystal structures and phase transitions of silica and its stuffed derivatives; bridges the relationship between the microstructural character of real silica minerals and the behavior of silica in the geological environment; covers Quantum mechanical considerations of the Si-O bond; shows how calculations based upon first-principles theory can explain and predict silica transitions at high temperatures and pressures; covers spectroscopic analyses of silica and how they reveal vibrational behaviors in response to variations in temperature, pressure, and composition and finally details the uses of silica for industrial purposes.

Volume 32 of Reviews in Mineralogy introduces the basic concepts of melt physics and relaxation theory as applied to silicate melts, then to describe the current state of experimental and computer simulation techniques for exploring the detailed atomic structure and dynamic processes which occur at high temperature, and finally to consider the relationships between melt structure, thermodynamic properties and rheology within these liquids. These fundamental relations serve to bridge the extrapolation from often highly simplified melt compositions studied in the laboratory to the multicomponent systems found in nature. This volume focuses on the properties of simple model silicate systems, which are usually volatile-free. The behavior of natural magmas has been summarized in a previous Short Course volume (Nicholls and Russell, editors, 1990: Reviews in Mineralogy, Vol. 24), and the effect of volatiles on magmatic properties in yet another (Carroll and Holloway, editors, 1994: Vol. 30). The Mineralogical Society of America sponsored a short course for which this was the text at Stanford University December 9 and 10, 1995, preceding the Fall Meeting of the American Geophysical Union and MSA in San Fransisco, with about 100 professionals and graduate students in attendance.
