From earthquakes to the northern lights and tsunamis to glacier movement, the author explains thousands of phenomena in the world around us. All of this is done using language that is simple and understandable, and at the same time this book does not try to deceive the reader, as materials of this nature often do, but uses exact physical formulas where they are needed. This book serves as an invaluable reference for physics teachers and should inspire high school students to study physics. Many of them will very likely be able to understand that riveting events and phenomena lie behind those very same formulas that just yesterday seemed so boring. This is an excellent and unique way of easily submerging oneself into the world of science and a non-stop intellectual challenge that lures the reader in much more than any game of chess. Sir Andre Geim, 2010 Nobel Prize Laureate in Physics There are plenty of high school students who continue to find science interesting today. Dmitry Livanov’s book, which is both useful and held in high regard, is written precisely with these young people in mind. This book can be used by teachers who want to expand the narrow scope of subject material in their classes and enable students to broaden their perspective about how to apply the laws of physics in order to understand such a complex natural object as planet Earth. This book will be of interest to high school students and graduates of high schools, specialized high schools and preparatory schools who want to test their understanding of physics, astronomy and geography. This book strengthens the foundation of scientific knowledge in today’s world, which repeatedly tests the strength of the collective body of science. Evgeniy Yamburg, Member of the Russian Academy of Education Principal, School #109, Moscow Dmitry Livanov was able to write a book that is interesting both for those who are just beginning to become familiar with physics, and for those who for various reasons have forgotten much of what they knew at one time. He succeeded in doing this because he himself knows and loves physics and because physics—as the most important part of human culture—is interesting to him. I hope that readers of this book will not only recognize the usefulness and importance of physics, but also appreciate its beauty and allure. Andrey Furchenko, Doctor of Physics and Mathematics, Aide to the President of the Russian Federation

In arid and semi-arid regions, where water demand exceeds water availability, water security is becoming a significant concern not only related to water availability but also to rigorous and costly requirements to remove conventional and emerging contaminants from effluents discharging into drinking water sources or as water reuse becomes an alternate water supply for communities in these regions. Water and wastewater treatment demands a great amount of energy and resources, highlighting the need for novel applications of the circular economy concept. Circular Economy Applications for Water Security examines knowledge gaps, avenues of future research, and challenges related to the potential of enhanced underutilized/waste materials as a transition to circular economy applications for ensuring the proper quality of water. This book includes fundamental information and practical examples that helps to better understand the concepts included. The circular economy concept is helpful to incept sustainability in the water treatment processes. Every chapter includes the identification of knowledge gaps, avenues for further research, and challenges that guide readers towards real state-of-the-art analysis. Contributors are experts in their areas and will commit to explaining concepts in a user-friendly way without missing scientific rigor.

On the Path of Good Luck and Bad Luck There are either of two paths, one can take in life: the path of good luck, or the path of bad luck. Whether making small decisions, big decisions, random choices, or short or long term plans, it is important to remember, that each decision, choice, or plan can lead one on either a path of good luck, or a path of bad luck. The path of good luck is, sometimes, referred to, as the path of milk and honey, where the road is wide open, and free of obstacles and hardships. The path of bad luck is, sometimes, referred to, as the path of darkness and thorns, where the road is narrow and twisted, and full of obstacles and hardships. The most important thing in traveling on any path is to make the right decision, choice, or plan to begin with, as to what path one should travel on, or the gate, or entrance way of which path to enter through, first. We must keep in mind, that once we go through the entrance gate, or once we have established ourselves on one path, it is hard, and, sometimes, even impossible, to leave that path to enter into, and travel on another path. This is, especially, true if the path, we are traveling on, or we have just entered, is the path of bad luck. Once we have entered through the entrance gate of the path of bad luck, we know, there is no turning back, or, at least, little reward, or repenting of our sins. The path of good luck is the easiest path from which to enter onto other paths, or from which to enter through the entrance gate of almost any other path. This is because the path of good luck is the path from which all other paths lead. Once we are on the path of good luck, it is possible to turn right or left onto any path, or go straight ahead on the same path if we have already set a final goal, and have met no obstacles. It is even possible to go backwards on the path of good luck, because the road is open, and wide, and there are no obstacles. That is, one can go backwards on 2 the path of good luck within consecutive times, and travel the same path, or through the same decision making process, and with the same goals as before. The most important thing when traveling on the path of good luck is to remember, that there are always side paths, or traps, that one can fall into, that will only lead to minor or major paths of bad luck, that are hard to get out of. The more the path is a path of bad luck, the harder it is to get out of, because the more the road will be dimmer, narrower, and full of thorns, ruts, twisted ways, and bogs, that can become very entrapping, and hard to get out of. Once on the path of good luck, it can be hard to stay on the path of good luck. One must be aware of side paths and traps, that will lead to obstacles. One must have made a final plan, that leads to a final goal, while traveling on the path of good luck, the whole time. One can make a worthwhile and valuable goal, but without establishing a worthwhile and valuable plan to reach the goal, the individual will fall from the path of good luck, and not reach his or her goal. Also, even if one has established a worthwhile goal, and a worthwhile plan to reach that goal, the individual must remember and keep it, constantly, on his mind, that the goal has not yet been reached, and never will be, unless the individual sticks to the original plan, the original goal, and the path of good luck. At any moment, the individual can be attacked from the sides, the front, or the back by unwanted visitors, strangers, or even thieves, that will try to lure the individual from the path of good luck. They will convince the individual to follow them, and lead him on a path of bad luck. Then, they will betray him, and leave him, and, possibly, even hurt or kill him, or rob him of all his money, and/or clothing. Sometimes, one will be traveling on a path, whether it be a path of good luck or bad luck, or somewhere in between without a definite purpose or plan. One will be mak

This book provides an in-depth analysis of the history and evolution of the major disciplines of science, which include the basic sciences, bioscience, natural sciences and medical science, with special emphasis on the Indian perspective. While academic interest shown in the history and philosophy of science dates back to several centuries, serious scholarship on how the sciences and the society interact and influence each other can only be dated back to the twentieth century. This volume explores the ethical and moral issues related to social values, along with the controversies that arise in relation to the discourse of science from the philosophical perspectives. The book sheds light on themes that have proved to have a significant and overwhelming influence on present-day civilisation. It takes the reader through a journey, on how the sciences have developed and have been discussed, to explore key themes like the colonial influences on science; how key scientific ideas have developed from Aristotle to Newton; history of ancient Indian mathematics; agency, representation, deviance with regard to the human body in science; bioethics; mental health, psychology and the sciences; setting up of the first teaching departments for subjects such as medicine, ecology and physiology in India; recent research in chemical technology; and even the legacy of ancient Indian scientific discoveries. A part of the Contemporary Issues in Social Science Research series, this interdisciplinary work will be of immense interest to scholars and researchers of philosophy, modern history, sociology of medicine, physical sciences, bioscience, chemistry and medical sciences. It will be of interest to the general reader also.
