More than 50 years have passed since the invention of the transistor in De cember 1947. The study of semiconductors was initiated in the 1930s but we had to wait for 30 years (till the 1960s) to understand the physics of semi conductors. When the transistor was invented, it was still unclear whether germanium had a direct gap or indirect gap. The author started to study semiconductor physics in 1960 and the physics was very difficult for a begin ner to understand. The best textbook of semiconductors at that time was "Electmns and Holes in Semiconductors" by W. Shockley, but it required a detailed knowledge of solid state physics to understand the detail of the book. In that period, junction transistors and Si bipolar transistors were be ing produced on a commercial basis, and industrialization of semiconductor technology was progressing very rapidly. Later, semiconductor devices were integrated and applied to computers successfully, resulting in a remarkable demand for semiconductor memories in addition to processors in the late 1970s to 1980s. Now we know that semiconductors play the most important role in information technology as the key devices and we cannot talk about the age of information technology without semiconductor devices. On the other hand, the physical properties of semiconductors such as the electrical and optical properties wcre investigated in detail in the 1950s, lead ing to the understanding of the energy band structures.

Recent studies on two-dimensional systems have led to new insights into the fascinating interplay between physical properties and dimensionality. Many of these ideas have emerged from work on electrons bound to the surface of a weakly polarizable substrate such as liquid helium or solid hydrogen. The research on this subject continues to be at the forefront of modern condensed matter physics because of its fundamental simplicity as well as its connection to technologically useful devices. This book is the first comprehensive overview of experimental and theoretical research in this exciting field. It is intended to provide a coherent introduction for graduate students and non-experts, while at the same time serving as a reference source for active researchers in the field. The chapters are written by individuals who made significant contributions and cover a variety of specialized topics. These include the origin of the surface states, tunneling and magneto-tunneling out of these states, the phase diagram, collective excitations, transport and magneto-transport.

Research on electronic transport in ultra small dimensions has been highly stimulated by the sensational developments in silicon technology and very large scale integration. The papers in this volume, however, have been influenced to no lesser extent by the advent of molecular beam epitaxy and metal/organic chemical vapor deposition which has made possible the control of semiconductor boundaries on a quantum level. This new control of boundary condi tions in ultra small electronic research is the mathematical reason for a whole set of innovative ideas. For the first time in the history of semiconductors, it is possible to design device functions from physical considerations involving ~ngstom scale dimensions. At the time the meeting was held, July 1982, it was one of the first strong signals of the powerful developments in this area. During the meeting, important questions have been answered concerning ballistic transport, Monte Carlo simulations of high field transport and other developments pertinent to new device concepts and the understanding of small devices from physics to function. The committee members want to express their deep appreciation to the speakers who have made the meeting a success. The USER pro ject of DOD has been a vital stimulous and thanks go to the Army Research Office and the Office of Naval Research for financial sup port. Urbana, January 1984 K. This book is the third of a three-volume series written by the same author. It aims to deliver a comprehensive and self-contained account of the fundamentals of the physics of solids. In the presentation of the properties and experimentally observed phenomena together with the basic concepts and theoretical methods, it goes far beyond most classic texts. The essential features of various experimental techniques are also explained. This volume is devoted mostly to the discussion of the effects of electron—electron interaction beyond the one-electron approximation. The density-functional theory is introduced to account for correlation effects. The response to external perturbations is discussed in the framework of linear response theory. Landau’s Fermi-liquid theory is followed by the theory of Luttinger liquids. The subsequent chapters are devoted to electronic phases with broken symmetry: to itinerant magnetism, to spin- and charge-density waves and their realizations in quasi-one-dimensional materials, as well as to the microscopic theory of superconductivity. An overview is given of the physics of strongly correlated systems. The last chapter covers selected problems in the physics of disordered systems.

Semiconductors are at the heart of modern living. Almost everything we do, be it work, travel, communication, or entertainment, all depend on some feature of semiconductor technology. Comprehensive Semiconductor Science and Technology, Second Edition, Three Volume Set captures the breadth of this important field and presents it in a single source to the large audience who study, make, and use semiconductor devices. Written and edited by a truly international team of experts and newly updated to capture key advancements in the field, this work delivers an objective yet cohesive review of the semiconductor world. The work is divided into three sections, fully updated and expanded from the first edition. The first section is concerned with the fundamental physics of semiconductors, showing how the electronic features and the lattice dynamics change drastically when systems vary from bulk to a low-dimensional structure and further to a nanometer size. Throughout this section there is an emphasis on the full understanding of the underlying physics, especially quantum phenomena. The second section deals largely with the transformation of the conceptual framework of solid-state physics into devices and systems, which require the growth of high-purity or doped, bulk and epitaxial materials with low defect density and well-controlled electrical and optical properties. The third section is devoted to design, fabrication and assessment of discrete and integrated semiconductor devices. It will cover the entire spectrum of devices we see all around us, for telecommunications, computing, automation, displays, illumination and consumer electronics. - Provides a comprehensive global picture of the semiconductor world - Written and Edited by an international team of experts - Compiles the most important semiconductor knowledge into one comprehensive resource - Moves from fundamentals and theory to more advanced knowledge, such as applications, allowing readers to gain a deeper understanding of the field

This volume contains contributions presented at the 12th International Conference on High Magnetic Fields in Semiconductor Physics. In order to give an overview, 37 lecturers not only reviewed the latest results in their field, but also gave a general introduction. The rapid development of semiconductor physics and technology during the last few years has resulted in an extensive application of high magnetic fields in both fundamental and applied research; more than 160 contributed papers were presented as posters.Sixteen years after its discovery, the quantum Hall effect (QHE) is still a subject of high activity. Many new results on the fractional QHE were presented; in addition to 6 invited papers, there were 43 contributions. Another field of high activity is magneto-optics, and 49 posters were presented. Magnetotransport also turned out to be of high interest, and magnetic semiconductors played a prominent role at the conference, too.Without doubt, the availability of superconducting magnets in most laboratories contributed to the growth of semiconductor physics in high magnetic fields. Because not all experiments can be performed in fields up to 10 or 15 teslas, high magnetic field laboratories offering larger fields are indispensable. There were reports from four laboratories on present work going on at these installations.

Mesoscopic Quantum Hall Effect written by Ivan Levkivskyi and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-08-18 with Science categories.

In recent years, remarkable progress in the fabrication of novel mesoscopic devices has produced a revival of interest in quantum Hall physics. New types of measurements, more precise and efficient than ever, have made it possible to focus closely on the electronic properties of quantum Hall edge states. This is achieved by applying charge and heat currents at mesoscopic length scales, attaching metallic gates and Ohmic contacts, and splitting edge channels with the help of quantum point contacts. The experiments reveal fascinating new phenomena, such as the interference, statistics, and topological phase shifts of fractionally charged quasi-particles, strong interaction and correlation effects, and phase transitions induced by non-Gaussian fluctuations. The thesis discusses some puzzling results of these experiments and presents a coherent picture of mesoscopic effects in quantum Hall systems, which accounts for integer and fractional filling factors and ranges from microscopic theory to effective models, and covers both equilibrium and non-equilibrium phenomena.
