One of the most widely used alphabets in the world today, Chinese characters, or Hanzi, have been in use continuously for thousands of years. Originally inspired by the natural world and using symbols to represent objects as well as concepts, this ideographic writing system has evolved over time to encompass a variety of styles or scripts. The Pictograms presents an in-depth study of the evolution of over 200 individual characters alongside a showcase of outstanding contemporary graphic design projects featuring Chinese characters. The result is an exploration of Hanzis incredible pliability and continued relevance as a graphic design element.

Since 1964, each edition of the Games has produced its own set of pictograms and redefines the genre. In that respect, the Games have played a major role in disseminating these "picture signs", which have become omnipresent in our lives. For teachers, and devised by The Olympic Museum, this sheet is made up of five sections: "Did you know?", which gives pupils the key elements to learn about the Olympic pictograms ; "Olympic object", which presents an item from the Olympic patrimony ; activities to develop observational skills, knowledge and creativity for 6-10 years olds ; pupils can work on these tailor-made activities in class, alone or in small groups ; activities on the same principle, for ages 11-15 ; "Resources" with additional documents for teachers (books, articles, educational support, etc.).

The ?Pictograms, Signs of Life, Emojis: The Society of Signs? catalogue explores the questions: What objectives, and hopes are linked to the development of the modern language of images, including emojis? To which issues of their time are they each reacting to? Do they expand our possibilities of expression or do they limit them by defining stereotypes? The focus of this catalogue is on lexicons and systems of pictorial signs devised by designers and artists like Gerd Arntz, Marie and Otto Neurath, Otl Aicher,0Yukio ?ta or Wolfgang Schmidt and others. How functional or engaging do the designers consider their pictorial signs to be? Are they interested in universal forms of communication or personal spaces of retreat, rapid transmission of information or complex or poetic forms of language, abstraction or individualisation?00Exhibition: Leopold-Hoesch-Museum, Düren, Germany (24.09.2020 - 11.04.2021) / Museum für Neue Kunst, Freiburg, Germany (07.05. - 12.09.2021).

A copiously illustrated and practical guide to informational graphics. Pictograms and icons are a keystone of nonverbal and multicultural communication. But what precisely are pictograms, and when is it appropriate to use them? What are their advantages? What rules must be followed, and what are the pitfalls that designers of pictograms and icons must take care to avoid? Drawing on a multitude of examples from around the world, the authors outline the history of the pictogram and show how it has been used in commercial and creative fields over the past century, as well as offering invaluable hints and advice to designers. The book features: over 2,000 illustrations organized by theme, including pictograms from all the Olympic Games from 1964 to 2004; tips from successful pictogram designers, with real- life examples to instruct and inspire; a detailed discussion of icons, the "silent servants" of online communities; a chapter by designer Jochen Gros on his quest to create a visual language that crosses all grammatical, semantic, and semiotic boundaries—in effect, to create a "language without words," and more.

This book presents a complete human-centered design process (ISO 9241:210) that had two goals: to design universal, intuitive, and permanent pictograms and to develop a process for designing suitable pictograms. The book analyzes characteristics of visual representations, grounded in semiotics. It develops requirements for pictogram contents, relying on embodied cognition, and it derives content candidates in empirical studies on four continents. The book suggests that visual perception is universal, intuitive, and permanent. Consequently, it derives guidelines for content design from visual perception. Subsequently, pictogram prototypes are produced in a research through design process, using the guidelines and the content candidates. Evaluation studies suggest that the prototypes are a success. They are more suitable than established pictograms and they should be considered universal, intuitive, and permanent. In conclusion, a technical design process is proposed.
