This Classic Edition published by Virtual University Press contains the full text of Oscar Wilde's gothic masterpiece, "The Picture of Dorian Gray." It is part of a literary series designed for enjoyment by contemporary readers and for classroom use by English, literature, and writing students. The book includes a study guide, discussion topics, and links to interactive online quizzes, which students can use to assess their grasp of key concepts and events in the story. In this tale of gothic horror, Dorian Gray is a remarkably handsome young man who views a painting of himself and wishes that he could retain his youth and beauty, while the painting ages. His wish is granted, and he embarks on a life of pleasure-seeking and debauchery that has dire consequences."The Picture of Dorian Gray" is Oscar Wilde's only novel, and in some respects, it was a harbinger of his own descent into a life of self-indulgence. He once said that the three main characters of the story were reflections of himself: "Basil Hallward (the artist) is what I think I am: Lord Henry (the hedonist) is what the world thinks of me: Dorian is what I would like to be--in other ages, perhaps." The book's daring embrace of decadence and sexuality sparked a furor in Victorian-era England. Today, the work is regarded as a great classic, a suspenseful and thought-provoking masterpiece that is as disturbing as it is intriguing.

"This revised Norton Critical Edition, like its predecessor, is the only edition available that includes both the 1890 Lippincott's and the 1891 book version of The Picture of Dorian Gray. Under the editorial guidance of Wilde scholar Michael Patrick Gillespie, students have the opportunity to read comparatively both published versions of this controversial novel." ""Backgrounds" and "Reviews and Reactions" allow readers to gauge The Picture of Dorian Gray's sensational reception when the 1890 version appeared and to consider the heated public debate over art and morality that followed its publication. Joris-Karl Huysmans, Walter Pater, and Oscar Wilde offer a sense of the diverse opinions on these topics. Eight contemporary reviews and comments on the novel are reprinted, among them four opinions from the St. James's Gazette immediately after publication in 1890, each followed by Oscar Wilde's vehement reply." ""Criticism" includes seven new essays on the novel that reflect key changes in interpretive theory in recent years and reveal the broad range of perspectives associated with Wilde and The Picture of Dorian Gray. Simon Joyce, Donald L. Lawler, Sheldon W. Liebman, Maureen O'Connor, Ellie Ragland-Sullivan, John Paul Riquelme, and Michael Patrick Gillespie provide their varied assessments. A Chronology and a Selected Bibliography are also included."--BOOK JACKET.

Wrapped in controversy, the publication of "The Picture of Dorian Gray" in 1891 was a milestone in world literature. The work was censored by publishers, who were afraid of shocking British morale with the publication, then scandalized and turned into evidence against the author himself in a lawsuit of moral aggression. But the qualities of the novel – the only one written by Oscar Wilde, famous for his plays – spoke louder and it is still fascinating to meet Dorian Gray, a character who lives a double life. He shows himself to society as an elegant and virtuous man, while secretly indulges in the most extreme hedonism, a result of selling his soul to ensure that he remains as handsome and youthful as his portrait, painted by his friend Basil Hallward, a young painter. Mixing the philosophical and the fantastical, this is Oscar Wilde's sagacity at its best. The ns_english collection features literary classics in their original language, putting the reader in direct contact with the words – and the legacy – of the greatest names of the world literature. Here you will find the integral text in English, enabling new interpretations, insights, and studies of works that have helped weave the history of the world – and that will be forever in our memories.

“Now, for the first time, we can read the version that Wilde intended...Both the text and Nicholas Frankel’s introduction make for fascinating reading.” —Paris Review More than 120 years after Oscar Wilde submitted The Picture of Dorian Gray for publication in Lippincott’s Monthly Magazine, the uncensored version of his novel appears here for the first time in a paperback edition. This volume restores all of the material removed by the novel’s first editor. Upon receipt of the typescript, Wilde’s editor panicked at what he saw. Contained within its pages was material he feared readers would find “offensive”—especially instances of graphic homosexual content. He proceeded to go through the typescript with his pencil, cleaning it up until he made it “acceptable to the most fastidious taste.” Wilde did not see these changes until his novel appeared in print. Wilde’s editor’s concern was well placed. Even in its redacted form, the novel caused public outcry. The British press condemned it as “vulgar,” “unclean,” “poisonous,” “discreditable,” and “a sham.” When Wilde later enlarged the novel for publication in book form, he responded to his critics by further toning down its “immoral” elements. Wilde famously said that The Picture of Dorian Gray “contains much of me”: Basil Hallward is “what I think I am,” Lord Henry “what the world thinks me,” and “Dorian what I would like to be—in other ages, perhaps.” Wilde’s comment suggests a backward glance to a Greek or Dorian Age, but also a forward-looking view to a more permissive time than his own repressive Victorian era. By implication, Wilde would have preferred we read today the uncensored version of his novel.
