Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. The idea of this book was first conceived over ten years ago and shortly after my retirement from academic circles ,a brief framework was put together while holidaying in Thailand. On my return from Thailand I put some "meat on the bones". A year or so later I was very fortunate to become the piking partner for a number of years of Phil Wakeford, one of the most respected and successful pike anglers in England who initially collaborated on the project but who went on to bigger and better solo ventures such as Pike Here and There (2012),co-editing PAC30 (2007) and making contributions to Ultimate Pike (2000).The original title of this book was "1001 Pike Fishing Facts and Tips" and was in no way, shape or form plagueurised from John Wilson's excellent book 1001 Top Angling Tips as my idea was borne many years before the publication his book. There is a rich plethora of old and new pike books out there but the more modern books contain up-to-date, state of the art information and techniques compared to many of the earlier works of the fifties, sixties and seventies which mention barbarous practices such as using gaffs and gags.It was perhaps Neville Fickling's book which set the British piking scene alive with his much revered book Piking in the 80's.I remember buying this book and thinking how modern and trendy it was. Since then there have been a couple of excellent books which have undoubtedly helped to teach the craft of pike fishing such as the Fox Guide to Modern Pike Fishing and the spectacular Pike Fishing beyond 2000 produced by the Pike Angler's Club of Great Britain. From all of the pike books which I have read, the couple of novice books still remain amongst my favourites are An Introduction to Pike Fishing by David Batten and The Pike Anglers Manual written by the late Barrie Rickards and these very much influenced the writing of this book.Well what does this book actually contain you may well ask yourself? And surely it can add nothing new to the existent pike fishing arena?Primarily this book is a cross between a large number of books and has the feel of a textbook and a piking encyclopedia, modesty of course prevented me from calling it The Pike Angler's Bible but at the same time, I hope that it contains something of interest to both the novice and expert alike: and your prayers are answered with the capture of a lifetime! There will no doubt be attempts by experienced pike anglers to critisise this work and disagree with some of the points made in this book. Well so what ?If an author was frightened of passing on any information that would be open to question and in severe cases ridicule, well nothing would ever be written and nothing would be passed on to future generations. If the contents of this book help to save the life of one specimen pike or encourage one person to pursue the rewarding hobby of pike fishing or has been instrumental in the development of one fishing friendship with a fellow pike angler ,then it is a job well done. The book is set out in 23 chapters each of which has been fully integrated into a Table of Contents found out at the front of the book and so finding information should be a relatively quick process and painless process. Each of these chapters has been broken down into a logical, stepwise series of facts and tips which were designed with a text book type of format. Speaking of which, this book is not plastered with pictures of pike captures but it does contain a series of diagrams used to illustrate all of the rigs and some of the tips described in the text.A fully illustrated version of this book containing over 300 photographs, The Illustrated Pike Text Book, is in preparation.

William Pike, a 22-year-old school teacher from Auckland, came to the attention of the nation on 25 September 2007 when, while tramping on Mt Ruapehu, he was critically injured during a volcanic eruption. William was trapped inside the hut, surrounded by mud and rocks and in freezing temperatures, while his friend went for help. When the rescue team arrived he was suffering from such severe hypothermia he was not expected to survive. Defying the odds, William then spent two months in Waikato Hospital, at first fighting for his life as his kidneys and liver shut down, and then in slow, steady recovery. But, despite having had his lower right leg amputated, just barely keeping his left leg and facing yet more reconstruction surgery, William is philosophical about his life-altering injuries. He is determined to return to Mt Ruapehu within the next year to complete the six-day tramp that was cut short by the eruption. William Pike's inspirational story begins with his trip to Nepal at the age of 12, which awakened his interest in outdoor pursuits of all kinds, and continues through his teens and early twenties as a mad-keen trampler, climber, surf-lifesaver and diver. William then retells his miraculous survival tale and reveals his plans for the future with infectious optimism and an approach to life that has remained intact - Every Day's A Good Day. ITS FIRST VICTIMS A screeching swan... A fisherman overboard... A drunken woman... One by one, the mysterious killer in Lake Windermere claims its terrified victims. Tearing off limbs with its monstrous teeth, horribly mutilating bodies. Fear sweeps the peaceful holiday resort when experts identify the creature as a giant pike.... A hellish creature with the strength to rupture boats, and the anger to attack them. But for some, the terror becomes a bonanza-the traders who cater to the gathering crowds of ghouls on the shore. And, they will do anything to stop divers finding the creature. Meanwhile the ripples of bloodshed widen.... The Pike The above, is the original text from the rear cover of Cliff's book. I remember this book going into pre-production as a major movie in the early 1980's starring Joan Collins. Sadly, the financiers ran into personal difficulties and it was never made. Today, there is now renewed interest in this book as a screenplay and movie. In my own book, 'Tuxedo Warriors, ' I tell the behind the scenes story of myself, my close friend Cliff Twemlow, and The Pike.

Excerpt from The Book of the Pike There is the so-called great northern pike, the gray muskellunge Of a few Wisconsin and Minnesota lakes. Now he is no more the true lungs, as some assert, than is his close relative, the Ohio or Great Lakes fish, some writers and fishermen to the contrary not withstanding. Call him northern pike if you want to, but Oh, I beg of you, never call the wall-eye a pike! I have enjoyed the gathering together Of these chapters even as I enjoyed their first preparation for the pages Of Outdoor Life, and I may as well here as any where make my bow to that good magazine for the privilege of republication in book form. Also I desire to thank Forest and Stream for permission to publish in the appendix the'chapter on hybrid ism of pike and pickerel, for it first appeared under my name in that magazine and brought me many letters from all over the country; therefore it seemed wise to me that it should appear in this, the first American book treating exclusively Of the pike family. Godfather to Mussolini, national hero of Italy and the WWI irredentist movement, literary icon of Joyce and Pound, lover of actress Eleonora Duse: here is Lucy Hughes-Hallett’s extraordinary biography of Gabriele d’Annunzio, poet, bon vivant, harbinger of Italian fascism. Gabriele d’Annunzio was Italy’s premier poet at a time when poetry mattered enough to trigger riots. A brilliant self-publicist in the first age of mass media, he used his fame to sell his work, seduce women, and promote his extreme nationalism. In 1915 d’Annunzio’s incendiary oratory helped drive Italy to enter the First World War, in which he achieved heroic status as an aviator. In 1919 he led a troop of mutineers into the Croatian port of Fiume and there a delinquent city-state. Futurists, anarchists, communists, and proto-fascists descended on the city. So did literati and thrill seekers, drug dealers, and prostitutes. After fifteen months an Italian gunship brought the regime to an end, but the adventure had its sequel: three years later, the fascists marched on Rome, belting out anthems they’d learned in Fiume, as Mussolini consciously modeled himself after the great poet. At once an aesthete and a militarist, d’Annunzio wrote with equal enthusiasm about Fortuny gowns and torpedoes, and enjoyed making love on beds strewn with rose petals as much as risking death as an aviator. Lucy Hughes-Hallett’s stunning biography vividly re-creates his flamboyant life and dramatic times, tracing the early twentieth century’s trajectory from Romantic idealism to world war and fascist aggression.
