In this poignant and hysterical memoir, The Pilgrim's Stone evokes a raw tumult of emotions through one woman's unpredictable and authentic journey to self. At 34, Heather Gauthier lost everything but her sense of humor. Stripped of her home, job, hair and divorcing during chemotherapy; she meets a pilgrim who pulls her out of darkness with the gift of a stone. For years, the stone continues to reappear until she heeds its call and vows to walk the 800 km trail of the Compostela de Santiago, in search of balance for her body mind and soul. Without a map or a compass to guide her, she endures countless misadventures including dinner with her pseudo ex-husband, haunting dreams, and a plane collision with a flock of Canadian Geese. Despite each disaster that occurs, valuable lessons about life are inadvertently learned; while deep spiritual experiences motivate her to continue walking. Step by step, she begins to heal her past with a gritty sense of humor, moving steadily towards Santiago with only the humble purpose of gratitude for the divine forces that have spared her life.

A Pilgrim S Journey written by Lady Evelyn Cobbold and has been published by Claritas Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on with Religion categories.

After spending her childhood holidays in North Africa (specifically, Libya) Lady Evelyn became fascinated with the Muslim way of life and eventually converted to Islam. This book recounts her travels to Medina to visit the Prophet’s mosque and then to Mecca to perform Hajj on 26 March 1933 at the age of 65. Lady Evelyn was a Scottish aristocrat, a Mayfair socialite, an accomplished angler and renowned deerstalker. She was the first British Muslim woman to make the pilgrimage to Mecca. Her pilgrimage account, first published in 1934, received favourable reviews in most British newspapers and periodicals. Unlike other authors of Hajj accounts, she was able to describe the lives of women residing in the holy cities. "It is a valuable record of the hajj ... We do not forget that the author is a Lady - she stays with the distinguished St John Philbys in Jeddah and travels to Mecca in a large limousine with chilled chicken and soda-water in a hamper at the back - but the picture she gives of the experience is unelaborate and revealing, and detailed enough to serve as a guidebook as well as a travel account." (p.41, Robinson, Wayward Women, Oxford University Press, 1990). Lady Evelyn (then, Zainab Cobbold) died in 1963 and was buried on a hillside on her estate in Wester Ross. 'Her splendidly Islamo-Caledonian interment symbolised her two worlds: a piper played MacCrimmon's Lament, while the Surah "Light" from the Quran was recited in Arabic.' (Facey, From Mayfair to Mecca, Guardian, 19 May 2008).

Pilgrimage in the Western world is enjoying a growing popularity, perhaps more so now than at any time since the Middle Ages. The Pilgrim Journey tells the fascinating story of how pilgrimage was born and grew in antiquity, how it blossomed in the Middle Ages and faltered in subsequent centuries, only to re-emerge stronger than before in modern times. James Harpur describes the pilgrim routes and sacred destinations past and present, the men and women making the journey, the many challenges of travel, and the spiritual motivations and rewards. He also explores the traditional stages of pilgrimage, from preparation, departure, and the time on the road, to the arrival at the shrine and the return home. At the heart of pilgrimage is a spiritual longing that has existed from time immemorial. The Pilgrim Journey is both the colourful chronicle of numerous pilgrims of centuries past searching for heaven on earth, and an illuminating guide for today's spiritual traveller.

Stone written by Jeffrey Jerome Cohen and has been published by U of Minnesota Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-05-06 with Philosophy categories.

Stone maps the force, vivacity, and stories within our most mundane matter, stone. For too long stone has served as an unexamined metaphor for the “really real”: blunt factuality, nature’s curt rebuke. Yet, medieval writers knew that stones drop with fire from the sky, emerge through the subterranean lovemaking of the elements, tumble along riverbeds from Eden, partner with the masons who build worlds with them. Such motion suggests an ecological enmeshment and an almost creaturely mineral life. Although geological time can leave us reeling, Jeffrey Jerome Cohen argues that stone’s endurance is also an invitation to apprehend the world in other than human terms. Never truly inert, stone poses a profound challenge to modernity’s disenchantments. Its agency undermines the human desire to be separate from the environment, a bifurcation that renders nature “out there,” a mere resource for recreation, consumption, and exploitation. Written with great verve and elegance, this pioneering work is notable not only for interweaving the medieval and the modern but also as a major contribution to ecotheory. Comprising chapters organized by concept —“Geophilia,” “Time,” “Force,” and “Soul”—Cohen seamlessly brings together a wide range of topics including stone’s potential to transport humans into nonanthropocentric scales of place and time, the “petrification” of certain cultures, the messages fossils bear, the architecture of Bordeaux and Montparnasse, Yucca Mountain and nuclear waste disposal, the ability of stone to communicate across millennia in structures like Stonehenge, and debates over whether stones reproduce and have souls. Showing that what is often assumed to be the most lifeless of substances is, in its own time, restless and forever in motion, Stone fittingly concludes by taking us to Iceland⎯a land that, writes the author, “reminds us that stone like water is alive, that stone like water is transient.”

Pilgrims Until We Die written by Ian Reader and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-06-17 with Religion categories.

The Shikoku pilgrimage, a 1400 kilometre, eighty-eight temple circuit around Japan's fourth largest island, takes around forty days by foot, or one week by car. Historically, Buddhist ascetics walked it without ceasing, creating a tradition of unending pilgrimage that continues in the present era, both by pilgrims on foot and by others in cars. Some spend decades walking the pilgrimage, while others drive it repeatedly, completing hundreds of pilgrimage circuits. Most are retired and make the pilgrimage the centre of their post-work lives. Others who work full-time spend their holidays and weekends as pilgrims. Some have only done the pilgrimage a few times but already imagine themselves as unending pilgrims and intend to do it "until we die". They talk happily of being addicted and having Shikokuby?, 'Shikoku illness', portraying this 'illness' and addiction as blessings. Featuring extensive fieldwork and interviews, this study of Japan's most famous Buddhist pilgrimage presents new theoretical perspectives on pilgrimage in general, along with rich ethnographic examples of pilgrimage practices in contemporary Japan. Pilgrims Until We Die counteracts normative portrayals of pilgrimage as a transient activity, defined by a temporary leave of absence from home to visit sacred places outside the parameters of everyday life, showing that many participants view pilgrimage as a way of creating a sense of home and permanence on the road. Examining how obsession, devotion, and a sense of addiction aided by modern developments and economic factors have created a culture of recurrent pilgrimage, Pilgrims Until We Die challenges standard understandings of pilgrimage.
