Though we routinely take to the air, for many of us flying remains a mystery. Few of us understand the how and why of jetting from New York to London in six hours. How does a plane stay in the air? Can turbulence bring it down? What is windshear? How good are the security checks? Patrick Smith, an airline pilot and author of Salon.com's popular column, "Ask the Pilot," unravels the secrets and tells you all there is to know about the strange and fascinating world of commercial flight. He offers: A nuts and bolts explanation of how planes fly Insights into safety and security Straight talk about turbulence, air traffic control, windshear, and crashes The history, color, and controversy of the world's airlines The awe and oddity of being a pilot The poetry and drama of airplanes, airports, and traveling abroad In a series of frank, often funny explanations and essays, Smith speaks eloquently to our fears and curiosities, incorporating anecdotes, memoir, and a life's passion for flight. He tackles our toughest concerns, debunks conspiracy theories and myths, and in a rarely heard voice dares to return a dash of romance and glamour to air travel.

A poetic and nuanced exploration of the human experience of flight that reminds us of the full imaginative weight of our most ordinary journeys—and reawakens our capacity to be amazed. The twenty-first century has relegated airplane flight—a once remarkable feat of human ingenuity—to the realm of the mundane. Mark Vanhoenacker, a 747 pilot who left academia and a career in the business world to pursue his childhood dream of flight, asks us to reimagine what we—both as pilots and as passengers—are actually doing when we enter the world between departure and discovery. In a seamless fusion of history, politics, geography, meteorology, ecology, family, and physics, Vanhoenacker vaults across geographical and cultural boundaries; above mountains, oceans, and deserts; through snow, wind, and rain, renewing a simultaneously humbling and almost superhuman activity that affords us unparalleled perspectives on the planet we inhabit and the communities we form.

Aviation Medicine And The Airline Passenger written by Andrew R. C. Cummin and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002-05-31 with Medical categories.

The only book of its kind, this comprehensive reference provides information on the implications of disease to the well being of airline passengers, and how such diseases may affect their fitness to fly. This is completely unlike other aviation medicine texts that concentrate on health conditions as they effect pilot and other crewmembers. Hospital Consultants, General Practitioners and Physicians in Occupational Medicine will frequently be asked questions by patients regarding their fitness to fly, and this book will be an invaluable source of information during consultations. The content includes practical advice on pre-flight assessment and the in-flight management of individual medical disorders, including possible exacerbations of chronic conditions during flight as well as acute emergencies. Background information on the physiology of aviation and the cabin environment is provided at a level appropriate for the non-specialist, and the book includes an important chapter on the medico-legal implications for physicians who are asked to participate in the care of other passengers taken ill during a flight. While airlines have their own guidelines regarding the management of in-flight medical emergencies, this book will also be of considerable interest to those involved in training cabin crew members to deal with these situations.

This is a True Life Story about the human relationships and emotions the author endured whilst spending life in a remote place far away from his family and the missions on which the author embarked upon to fight boredom during that period. The author is an aircraft pilot by profession, but a writer by passion. He has a unique writing style and the ability to narrate a story to give a fully immersive reading experience. The story starts with a small girl who wakes up the author in the morning and ends with the author driving a steam engine passenger train from one railway station to another about 18 kilometers away. In between these two events the author goes through far too many hilarious, adventurous and emotional incidents. Overall a great true life story book in English language worth reading for all age groups.

The flight was doomed. Countless instrument flights are made around the world every day without incident. The state-of-the art aviation equipment and technology make most flights by instruments, that is a flight without visibility outside the aircraft, routine. The Sixth Passenger is an exception. The sudden loss of all communication and navigation capability rendered the light, five-passenger aircraft helpless while flying in dense clouds at an altitude of five thousand feet. As long as the pilot maintained the heading and altitude published on the aeronautical chart he was using, he could keep the aircraft free of obstacles and safely above the mountaintops. Fuel supply was seldom a problem on instrument flights; however, it eventually became a major factor. The plane's three-fuel tanks were all flashing "Empty." Repetitious Mayday calls by the pilot all proved futile as he sought assistance from air traffic control. The pilot could not see or been seen nor could he hear or be heard. He needed a miracle to get down safely. When everything looked hopeless, the sixth passenger appeared.
