Excerpt from The Pioneer Fringe Six years ago, encouraged by David White, at that time the Home Secretary of the National Academy of Sciences and an officer Of the National Research Council, I presented a plan of research in pioneer settlement to the latter organization. After two years' consideration by a special committee, and by the Division of Geology and Geography, the National Research Council approved the plan and recommended it to the Social Science Research Council. The latter organization, after similar consideration for two years, gave its approval and provided generously for the support of the first project. This made it possible for the members of the Advisory Committee of the American Geographical Society to prepare a detailed plan of research in the Canadian field, a plan that has since been vigorously prosecuted by Canadian scholars through the Canadian Pioneer Problems Committee, with results that Will be published in the near future. At the same time the Council Of the American Geographical Society generously set up a separate fund for the support of related work on a more limited scale in several other regions. The Social Science Research Council and the American Geo graphical Society have also contributed to a joint fund for the publication of a series of papers entitled Pioneer Settlement by thirty authors who are specialists in the field and familiar with the regions With which they deal. The Pioneer Fringe is intended as an introduction to this companion volume and to the various publications that the plan will call into being and deals with the ideas that moved the three supporting organizations to give their approval. In Disciplinary Conquest Ricardo D. Salvatore rewrites the origin story of Latin American studies by tracing the discipline's roots back to the first half of the twentieth century. Salvatore focuses on the work of five representative U.S. scholars of South America—historian Clarence Haring, geographer Isaiah Bowman, political scientist Leo Rowe, sociologist Edward Ross, and archaeologist Hiram Bingham—to show how Latin American studies was allied with U.S. business and foreign policy interests. Diplomats, policy makers, business investors, and the American public used the knowledge these and other scholars gathered to build an informal empire that fostered the growth of U.S. economic, technological, and cultural hegemony throughout the hemisphere. The microhistory of the wine industry in colonial Moquegua, Peru, during the colonial period stretches from the sixteenth through nineteenth centuries, yielding a wealth of information about a broad range of fields, including early modern industry and labor, viniculture practices, the cultural symbolism of alcohol consumption, and the social history of an indigenous population. Uniting these perspectives, Vintage Moquegua draws on a trove of field research from more than 130 wineries in the Moquegua Valley. As Prudence Rice walked the remnants of wine haciendas and interviewed Peruvians about preservation, she saw that numerous colonial structures were being razed for development, making her documentary work all the more crucial. Lying far from imperial centers in pre-Hispanic and colonial times, the area was a nearly forgotten administrative periphery on an agricultural frontier. Spain was unable to supply the Peruvian viceroyalty with sufficient wine for religious and secular purposes, leading colonists to import and plant grapevines. The viniculture that flourished produced millions of liters, most of it distilled into pisco brandy. Summarizing archaeological data and interpreting it through a variety of frameworks, Rice has created a three-hundred-year story that speaks to a lost world and its inhabitants.
