With virtually the same personnel that had won both the National League pennant and the World Series the previous season, the 1926 Pittsburgh Pirates were favored by the majority of preseason prognosticators to capture the pennant for the second year in a row. But they finished in third place, four and a half games behind the St. Louis Cardinals. That failure has largely been attributed to the alleged dissension caused by the presence of vice president and assistant to the manager Fred Clarke on the Pirate bench and to the ramifications of an attempt by several players to remove him, known as the "ABC Affair." This book chronicles the '26 Pirates, showing that the blame assigned to Clarke has been mostly misplaced and that the reasons for the Bucs' failure were far more complex.

Nebraska is not usually thought of as a focal point in the history of black baseball, yet the state has seen its share of contributions to the African American baseball experience. This book examines nine of the most significant, including the rise and fall of the Lincoln Giants, Satchel Paige's adventures in the Cornhusker State, a visit from Jackie Robinson, and the maturation of Bob Gibson both on and off the field. Also, recollections are featured from individuals who participated in or witnessed the African American baseball experience in the Omaha area.

REVISED, UPDATED, AND EXPANDED! The Big Bang Theory – CBS's surprise hit sitcom – was recently renewed through 2017 after pulling in 19 million weekly viewers in its most recent season. Any fan who tunes in week to week wasn't surprised. The quirky show does what so few shows manage to do: straddle the fence between cult hit and mega-popular award-winner. Now, in Unraveling the Mysteries of The Big Bang Theory, longtime sf fan and author George Beahm has put together a guide with photographs for all fans of the show – mainstream tv viewers, sf and comics fans, and science enthusiasts alike. Whether you're a Penny or a Sheldon, whether you've just tuned in or been watching all along, this companion book will help you appreciate The Big Bang Theory to the fullest. Unraveling the Mysteries of The Big Bang Theory offers a full, comprehensive look at the series: from an analysis of the awful original pilot (that viewers may never get to see) to a tour of the real Cal Tech (which serves as one of the show's main settings), from a fandom terminology guide to enlightening analyses of the endearingly original main characters, all the show's quirkiest and most appealing elements are put under the microscope. This updated edition includes a focus on the show's female characters in addition to bringing the content up to date through the show's seventh season.

Baseball S Roaring Twenties written by Ronald T. Waldo and has been published by Rowman & Littlefield this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-04-20 with Sports & Recreation categories.

Following the 1919 Black Sox scandal, baseball needed men willing and able to pump life back into the game during tough times. Numerous ballplayers stepped forward and left their mark on the national pastime as it continued to thrive and grow during a decade that became known as the Roaring Twenties, a raucous, happy time period when a free-spirited nature prevailed. In Baseball’s Roaring Twenties: A Decade of Legends, Characters, and Diamond Adventures, Ronald T. Waldo recounts the rollicking escapades surrounding a distinctive collection of players, managers, and umpires that truly personified this era of baseball history. Waldo includes a mix of unique stories and amusing tales surrounding baseball greats like Babe Ruth, Connie Mack, Rabbit Maranville, and Casey Stengel, alongside less famous diamond performers such as Duster Mails, Jay Kirke, Jimmy O’Connell, and Possum Whitted. The fans—who were every bit as important in helping the game grow during the ‘20s—are also given their due with a chapter of their own. From the story of Heinie Mueller unceremoniously pushing his attractive cousin out of sight when he saw manager Branch Rickey approaching to the tale of minor league hurler Augie Prudhomme literally following the sarcastic directive from pilot George Stallings to burn his uniform, Baseball’s Roaring Twenties provides an entertaining perspective of baseball during this singular decade. Amusing and informative, this book will be of interest to baseball fans and historians of all generations.

Big Data Baseball provides a behind-the-scenes look at how the Pittsburgh Pirates used big data strategies to end the longest losing streak in North American pro sports history. New York Times Bestseller After twenty consecutive losing seasons for the Pittsburgh Pirates, team morale was low, the club’s payroll ranked near the bottom of the sport, game attendance was down, and the city was becoming increasingly disenchanted with its team. Big Data Baseball is the story of how the 2013 Pirates, mired in the longest losing streak in North American pro sports history, adopted drastic big-data strategies to end the drought, make the playoffs, and turn around the franchise’s fortunes. Big Data Baseball is Moneyball for a new generation. Award-winning journalist Travis Sawchik takes you behind the scenes to expertly weave together the stories of the key figures who changed the way the Pirates played the game, revealing how a culture of collaboration and creativity flourished as whiz-kid analysts worked alongside graybeard coaches to revolutionize the sport and uncover groundbreaking insights for how to win more games without spending a dime. From pitch framing to on-field shifts, this entertaining and enlightening underdog story closely examines baseball’s burgeoning big data movement and demonstrates how the millions of data points which aren’t immediately visible to players and spectators, are the bit of magic that led the Pirates to finish the 2013 season in second place and brought an end to a twenty-year losing streak.

Once I started writing, it became an addiction for me. And although I've been writing for over 50 years now, this is my very first publication. The feelings and emotions felt for various situations and circumstances unravel throughout this work. Some are very pleasant-canoeing down an early morning river. Some are most unwelcome-children hungering for food and thirsting for love. All life constantly unwinds...unravels. Nothing can stop it or hold it in check. Many events contribute to its final ending. Within these pages are some of my values, expectations, and priorities, a synopsis of what is good and what is evil. It is intended to allow for wonder to inspire, to make you laugh a little, and to encourage care and concern for others. But also, it will sometimes show the darker side of our presence here on earth. Human beings have a great responsibility to tend and care for our planet (Genesis 2:15). Sometimes we do, and sometimes we fail miserably. We are the first fruits of God's creation and have the God-given ability to rule over every other creature. But ability without wisdom and love will inevitably lead to disaster. Just as Jesus was crucified because of envy, greed, hatred, and ignorance, we can also "crucify" the earth God gave us to nourish. So here is a single voice, spanning over 5 decades, that will continue unraveling until it also comes to rest and eventually will only be remembered by God and by the contents of this tiny book.
