In this synthesis, findings from four demonstration prfojects in Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Kenya and Egypt are used to provide guidance in the design and implementation of microenterprise assistance projects. The case studies provide considerable insight on how to reach the (pre-) entrepreneurial groups. PISCES experience provides that microenterprise projects have both social and business objectives. Their commitment to the poor implies a specific effort to identify innovative approaches more relevant to the often uneducated, migrants virtually lacking experience with institutions of any kind. New directions for assistance to the sector would include institutionalisation of the capacity to reach the informal sector thereby strengthening the dissemination process and scaling up projects to reach a larger number of clients.
