Excerpt from The Place-Names of Cumberland and Westmorland Turning to the Irish annals and Scandinavian sagas, we learn that at the end of the ninth century the Vikings appeared for the first time in the Bristol Channel. They landed first in Glamorganshire, but, being repulsed by the Welsh, crossed over to Ireland, the wealth of whose monasteries was famed far and wide. The numerous Irish kings and chiefs, being ever at war with each other, could offer no effectual resistance to the invaders, and thus began the harrying of Ireland by fleet after fleet from Scandinavia, which lasted over a generation. The later invaders were Norwegians, the finn-gaill, or Fair strangers, ' of the Irish annals. They pushed into the interior and set up kingdoms of their own, and it was not until the decisive battle of Clontarf, in 1014, that the Irish finally regained the mastery in their own land. The coasts of Scotland also suffered from incursions, while the islands were completely taken possession of and settled by Norwegians. For centuries they were counted as Norse colonies, a Norway beyond the seas.' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Place Names in Kent In some parts of England and Wales this study of local place names has been taken up with enthusiasm by teachers and scholars, and in this connexion it should be noted that the names of every lane, house, and field and wood, should be ascertained and recorded, even if no meaning can be found. Names of this kind change, and the old folk who could say why a name was given will not be always with us. Terriers and Tithe Maps, which can be consulted, if not bor rowed, will give more names than ordinary maps. The Victorians and English Dialect tells the story of the Victorians' discovery of English dialect, and of the revaluation of local language that was brought about by the new, historical philology of the nineteenth century. Regional dialects came to be seen not as corrupt or pernicious, but rather as venerable and precious. The book examines the work of the ground-breaking collectors of the 1840s and 1850s, who first alerted their contemporaries to the importance of local dialect - and also to the perils that threatened it with extinction. Tracing the connection between dialect and literature, in the flourishing of dialect poetry and the foregrounding of regional voices in Victorian fiction. It goes on to explain how the antiquity of regional dialects cast light on the national past - the Celts, Anglo-Saxons, and Vikings - and how dialect study was also at the heart of the discovery of local folklore and oral culture: old words, old customs, old beliefs. And it tells the story of the three great monuments of Victorian dialect study that marked the apogee of regional philology: the 80 publications of the English Dialect Society (1873-96), an organization run by a committee of journalists and local historians in Manchester; the nationwide survey of The Existing Phonology of English Dialects (1889), which listened in on local speech in market squares and third-class railway carriages; and the multi-volume English Dialect Dictionary (1898-1905), which collected all the previous labours together, and made an enduring record of Victorian dialect.
