Excerpt from The Planting and Care of Shade Trees The reader is reminded that none of the papers pretends to be exhaustive of its subject; each deals in the briefest possible way with the things that concern the trees of the State, and aims to tell what to avoid as well as what must be done. The bulletin will serve as a manual to those who are accustomed to working with trees, and will guide those who seek to travel an unknown, though it may be an attractive, path. More detailed information will be found in the books listed on page 123, though for any important work tree owners are advised to seek the assistance of a reputable tree planter, tree doctor, arborist or forester. The Agricultural Experiment Station and the Forest Com mission have lists of such and will furnish them upon request. Finance Both offices are prepared to give advice bv md' mail on any matter relating to trees, and, when necessary, either will have a competent man make an ex amination and report. Any municipal body, as a shade tree commission, or the managers of a public institution, will be aided without charge; individuals will ordinarily be re quired to pay the consultant's expenses, but not his salary. Excerpt from Shade-Trees in Towns and Cities: Their Selection, Planting, and Care as Applied to the Art of Street Decoration; Their Diseases and Remedies; Their Municipal Control and Supervision During the last few years there has been a remarkable growth of interest in the planting of trees for ornament and shade. In an editorial of February 10, 1909, the Savannah News remarked: "The increasing interest in shade-trees in practically all of the cities of the country is worthy of more than a passing notice. This interest seems to be keeping abreast of the sanitary reforms that are being inaugurated. While it isn't stated that there is a connection between tree-planting and hygienic reforms, there is no doubt that shade-trees contribute to the healthfulness of a city... The shade-trees have a restful effect, because making homes more attractive. That which tends to give rest and pleasure must also contribute to healthfulness." The awakening of interest in tree-planting has been followed by the development of the movement for shade-tree departments in towns and cities. The Shade-Tree Commission of East Orange, N. J., organized in the spring of 1904, was the third in the State. There are now thirty-one towns and cities in New Jersey that have such departments. The work of the Shade-Tree Commissions, of Newark and East Orange especially, has proved very successful, and during the last few years there have come to these departments hundreds of requests from different parts of the country for information regarding methods of work and forms of organization. Few people realize that any tree standing beside a sidewalk, or even on a lawn, is out of its element (the forest), and that the strains and dangers to which it is subject must be counteracted in every way possible. The advice given refers particularly to New Jersey; it is applicable to most of the eastern United States. The value of shade trees. Tho it is now well established that a Shade tree has a value beyond that of its wood, or the cost of plant ing a new one, and that neither individuals nor public service agencies can injure one without becoming liable for damages, it is advisable always to avoid such troubles. Street trees and lawn trees. It is needful to distinguish between street trees and lawn trees because only a few deciduous species, and no evergreens, can be maintained on narrow paved ways, whereas a lawn admits a variety of trees and Shrubs, deciduous and evergreen, that is limited only by space and climatic conditions. On streets and lawns close to the sea the available kinds of trees are few, and extreme care in their selection and nurture is required.
