This report begins with an introduction on the ecological significance of an area located at the tip of the Greenwich Peninsula, Prince Edward Island National Park, along with its cultural history and a review of previous field studies of the area's plants. It then reviews materials & methods used in an inventory of vascular plants conducted in that area in summer 1998. The 293 species identified are inventoried for the following habitats found in the study area: sand dunes, forest, old agricultural fields, wetlands, and shorelines. For each habitat, information is provided on habitat characteristics, species diversity and abundance, floral status and origin, and plants not previously recorded in the province. The subsequent sections provide further detail on flora found for the first time in the province or in the study area; note species not found in the 1998 survey that were found in earlier surveys; discuss overall floral status, origin, and diversity; and suggest indicator species for monitoring ecological integrity of the study area. The concluding section makes recommendations for park zoning, protection of rare plants, park interpretation facilities, and further research. Appendices include species lists.

This book provides a modern, synthetic overview of what is known about the structure, functioning and interactions of marine and terrestrial systems at the Prince Edward Islands. Building on more than 50 years of biological, geological, meteorological, and oceanographic research, it demonstrates not only how inextricably linked marine and terrestrial systems at the islands are, but also how global environmental challenges, such as climate change, biological invasions, and over exploitation, are playing out at the regional and local levels in the Southern Ocean.

Dictionary Of Prince Edward Island English written by Terry Kenneth Pratt and has been published by University of Toronto Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996-01-01 with Reference categories.

Strupac, fornenst, trappy, scriss, kippy, snool, flying axehandles, from across - these and hundreds of other fascinating and colourful words and phrases give the English language as it has been spoken in Canada's smallest province a flavour all its own. With the Dictionary of Prince Edward Island English, T.K. Pratt makes a major scholarly contribution to the growing list of regional dictionaries that enable us to discover the rich heritage of the language as spoken throughout North America; at the same time it offers a splendid general introduction to the historical and sociological life of the island. There are approximately 1000 entries of non-standard or dialect words, past and present. The notes deal with usage, pronunciation, alternate forms and spellings, and stylistic and regional labels. Entries include definitions, supportive quotations from P.E.I. sources, editorial notes about various subtleties, and dictionary notes which provide links to some thirty-five other dictionaries. Pratt's introduction defines the criteria for inclusion of words, explains his research methods, and outlines the layout of entries. The end matter includes a bibliography and an important sociolinguistic essay, 'The Dictionary in Profile,' which places the work in the broader context of Prince Edward Island speech. Its range and depth of coverage make this an essential work not only for those concerned with P.E.I. and Maritimes studies, but for all those interested in the regional usage of English.
