Now with a new chapter on the Wildcats' legendary comeback in the 2014 Final Four John Calipari, one of the most successful coaches in NCAA history, presents the world of college basketball from the coach's chair, unvarnished and straight from the heart. Players First is Calipari's account of his first six years coaching the University of Kentucky men's team, leading it to a national championship in 2012 and the championship game in 2014, all while dealing with the realities of the "one-and-done" mentality and an NCAA that sometimes seems to put players last. Filled with revelatory stories about what it takes to succeed at the highest level of the college game, Players First is a candid look at the great players and rivalries that have filled Calipari's life with joy and a sense of purpose.

This is a book about learning. Learning can often be forgotten or fringe in the pursuit of other fruits. When these fruits are practice books, formal & standardised education and easy to digest, saccharine infused niceties there is a risk that we overlook one of the fundamental human needs; to develop, change, grow and learn to master crafts. The mastery of crafts such as coaching takes time, earnest commitment and many challenging, chastening experiences that leave us feeling a little less than skilful. However we overcome these challenges, they are likely to be enablers that support our learning and growth towards becoming a better coach than we were yesterday. This book is intended to support that exploration; generate and guide your thinking whilst ensuring the gestation of those seeds of thought. We will encourage and enable a deeper understanding of the people or players in our care and provide some illumination on how to guide our decisions in designing environments that are responsive to both you and your players. There will be no coaching prescriptions, simply because the general nature of a constraints-led approach is at odds with prescription focussed approaches to coaching. A constraints-led approach encourages us to take account of, better understand and integrate what we understand about the player (person), the game of football (task) and the specific conditions on any given day (environment) into every interaction, coaching session, game-day, tournament and any other activity we might engage in within player development. There will, however, be some probing into alternative ways for coaches to eschew the traditional practice book or formal curriculum and scaffold player and coach development towards a unique, bespoke, responsive eco-system that keeps rhythm with the beating heart of our own football club. Taken together, this can support the experiences we are exposed to and build to be unique, individual and reflective of what collectively we have agreed and understand to be important in our world. The characteristics of our context should be coupled to our commitments. The backdrop to the way of thinking expressed in this book has been supported by a generation spent within coaching and development; fortune has favoured the opportunity for me to support in a sustained fashion the development of players who have been top scorers at The World Cup, multiple Premier League winners and coaches who coach and manage across some of Europe's top leagues. However, these perceived successes must be allied to the players within those same development programmes whose opportunity has been curtailed by serious injury and coaches who have fallen foul of some of the vagaries that the industry can perpetuate. As such, no development system is universally successful or unsuccessful and we should be careful, thoughtful and willing to as readily 'research' the graveyard as we do the top table. That mirror may be unpleasant to stare into at times, yet it is an important reflection of our own fallibilities and an important reminder to ensure that whatever outcomes our coaching and development programmes facilitate; supporting them to be as humanly supportive yet challenging as is consciously achievable is a worthy and important goal. The aspiration for this book is that it provides a map of some of the landscape that coaches may wish to explore in developing their own constraints-led approach to development, both for the players in their care and for themselves as a coach. Illuminating this fertile land sufficiently to support discoveries that are purposeful, personal and personable.

The Players Coach written by Tom Moore and has been published by Diversion Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-09-03 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Pro Football Hall of Fame assistant coach Tom Moore recalls his nearly 50-year NFL career, from Chuck Knoll's Pittsburgh Steelers to the Peyton Manning-era Indianapolis Colts through Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, featuring the players he has developed (Manning, Brady, Terry Bradshaw, Lynn Swann, Barry Sanders, and others), his role in the evolution of professional football, and the keys to his player-centric coaching philosophy. Tom Moore is the greatest NFL assistant coach of all-time, though he humbly cites the talent and hard work of his players as the keys to his success. In six decades, he has served as a guru of offensive football to the likes of Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Terry Bradshaw, Franco Harris, Barry Sanders, Marshall Faulk, Edgerrin James, Lynn Swann, John Stallworth, Mike Webster, Randall McDaniel, Cris Carter, Marvin Harrison, and more. In The Players' Coach, the oldest active NFL coach chronicles the most exceptional players-first career in the history of professional football, talks football with his elite protégés and his underdog mentorees alike, and lays out the principles that helped him define the modern gridiron. In an era of "systems," "analytics," and "Xs and Os," Moore maintains a refreshing focus on the "Jimmys and Joes"--constantly refining and augmenting players' individual talents and ability to read defenses, and building play-calling around the unique skills of his players. The Players' Coach digs deep into Moore's one-on-one sessions with all-time NFL greats, untested rookies, and grizzled veterans seeking football knowledge and play-making prowess. The results speak for themselves: 25 postseason appearances, 15 division titles, and 4 Super Bowl victories in an ongoing career that has included the Steelers, Vikings, Lions, Saints, Colts, Jets, Titans, Cardinals, and Buccaneers. With Moore's coaching tips, leadership philosophy, and life lessons woven throughout chapters about coaching Manning, Bradshaw and Swann, Sanders, and a 40-something-year-old Brady, The Players' Coach is a player-development masterclass. It is also an unforgettable, inspirational life-story, from humble beginnings to becoming the quarterback for the University of Iowa, a college coaching career, and then to assistant-coach and offensive-coordinator roles in six different decades. The Players' Coach is destined to be a football classic, a coaching Bible, and must-read on leadership.

This book details a methodology to coach the fundamentals of athletic, player, and team development in all sports using baseball as the backdrop. It describes the process of how to prepare players for life after sport by asking coaches to recognize the benefits, responsibility, and higher calling of mentoring their team members within the game for beyond the game. The book persuasively describes how to get the most out of players by first connecting with, validating, and supporting the person. Next, it demonstrates how and why training the athlete is essential to maximizing the development of the player. Once the foundation of the person and athlete are established, the book describes the process, including dozens of tips and drills, to prepare and develop the players and team to be the best they can be for sport, careers, and life.
