From Tolstoy to Lenin, from Diaghilev to Stalin, The Empire Must Die is a tragedy of operatic proportions with a cast of characters that ranges from the exotic to utterly villainous, the glamorous to the depraved. In 1912, Russia experienced a flowering of liberalism and tolerance that placed it at the forefront of the modern world: women were fighting for the right to vote in the elections for the newly empowered parliament, Russian art and culture was the envy of Europe and America, there was a vibrant free press and intellectual life. But a fatal flaw was left uncorrected: Russia's exuberant experimental moment took place atop a rotten foundation. The old imperial order, in place for three hundred years, still held the nation in thrall. Its princes, archdukes, and generals bled the country dry during the First World War and by 1917 the only consensus was that the Empire must die. Mikhail Zygar's dazzling, in-the-moment retelling of the two decades that prefigured the death of the Tsar, his family, and the entire imperial edifice is a captivating drama of what might have been versus what was subsequently seen as inevitable. A monumental piece of political theater that only Russia was capable of enacting, the fall of the Russian Empire changed the course of the twentieth century and eerily anticipated the mood of the twenty-first.

This book provides a juridical, sociopolitical history of the evolution of the 1994 Rwandan genocide. Over one million citizens were massacred in less than 100 days via a highly organized, efficiently executed genocide throughout the tiny country of Rwanda. While genocide is not a unique phenomenon in modern times, a genocide like Rwanda’s is unique. Unlike most genocides, wherein a government plans and executes mass murder of a targeted portion of its population, asking merely that the majority population look the other way, or at most, provide no harbor to the targeted population (ex: Germany), the Rwandan government relied heavily on the civilian population to not only politically support, but actively engage in the acts of genocide committed over the 100 days throughout the spring of 1994. This book seeks to understand why and how the Rwandan genocide occurred. It analyzes the colonial roots of modern Rwandan government and the development of the political “state of exception” created in Rwanda that ultimately allowed the sovereign to dehumanize the minority Tutsi population and execute the most efficient genocide in modern history.

This is the incredible true story of how two small bands of hostile nomads, now known as the Yuquí (you-KEY), were befriended by a group of courageous missionaries who placed their trust fully in God. Day after day, the missionaries put their lives at risk in the western Bolivian Amazon in order to make friends with the jungle dwellers, thus sparing the tribe from annihilation by those who were invading their territory. The task was not easy as one missionary was speared and six others shot with seven-foot-long arrows during the years it took to convince the aggressive Yuquí to settle down. During those years, numerous pioneer settlers lost their lives to Indian arrows, and many Yuquí were gunned down by the settlers and loggers. Without the timely intervention of the missionaries, the tribe would soon have ceased to exist. Three small bands of the jungle dwellers, numbering about ninety people, were preserved but at the cost of great physical and mental hardships to the missionary team. Through it all, the missionaries understood that it was a unique privilege to have a part in what God was doing as He used them to show His love to the Yuquí people.

Step by step, their careful plans begin to wear Driscoll down. And they may even succeed in their plan -- they can trust each other long enough to pull it off... A taut noir crime-thriller by the author of The Star Trap and In a Vanishing Room.

The bestselling author of WW III “Wonderful, one of the great suspense stories of World War II” —Clive Cussler Set during World War II, MacArthur Must Die is a "what-if" thriller in the great tradition of Eye of the Needle and The Eagle Has Landed, centering on a Japanese assassination plot against General Douglas MacArthur. It is 1942 and Japan owns the Pacific. The speed with which the Japanese have captured vast territories in a few months makes the Nazi Blitzkrieg look plodding by comparison. Hundreds of thousands are taken prisoner as Americans in the Philippines and the British in Singapore are forced to surrender, and President Roosevelt orders MacArthur to escape from the Philippines to Australia, from where he can launch a counter-offensive—hence MacArthur's famous promise, "I shall return." But what if the Japanese have no intention of allowing MacArthur to return to the Philippines or anywhere else within their freshly consolidated empire? And War Minister Tojo orders that MacArthur be assassinated: "MacArthur Must Die." The ingenious assassination plot—involving a submarine-launched, bomb-laden Kamikaze aircraft—is created in vivid, hair-raising detail while the action unfolds against a backdrop of dramatic historical events in the Pacific Theater of Operations that will place the reader convincingly close to the most devastating blow imaginable to the allied cause in the Pacific during World War II. “A high-noon shootout in downtown Brisbane, which produces a denouement straight out of Higgin’s The Eagle Has Landed. As a native of his narrative’s Australian setting, Slater is [also] able to offer flashes of local color.” —Kirkus Reviews

Merriam Press World War 2 Memoir. After boot camp at the Marine Corps Air Station, El Centro, Calif., Nutter was assigned to the intelligence section of HQ Squadron, 2nd Marine Air Wing, MAG 43, tasked to join the invasion force of Okinawa. He was issued a typewriter and assigned various report writing duties. Before long his experience, his age and his lighthearted, infectious personality, won him increased freedom and access to the stories unfolding around him. His account of the battles fought to secure Okinawa is often grim, but always with an eye for the determination and spirit that animated these citizen warriors, lifting them to the acts of sacrifice and heroism that fill these pages-the raw stuff of America's victory over Japan. Nutter Completed in 1945, Nutter was unable to find a publisher and died in 1950, and for some 70 years the manuscript sat, a time capsule preserving the stories of the men he got to know. Nothing has been changed.
