Fact and fiction meet at the boundaries, the betwixt and between where transformations occur. This is the area of ambiguity where fiction and fact become endowed with meaning, and this is the area—where ambiguity, irony, and metaphor join forces—that Harold Scheub exposes in all its nuanced and evocative complexity in The Poem in the Story. In a career devoted to exploring the art of the African storyteller, Scheub has conducted some of the most interesting and provocative investigations into nonverbal aspects of storytelling, the complex relationship between artist and audience, and, most dramatically, the role played by poetry in storytelling. This book is his most daring effort yet, an unconventional work that searches out what makes a story artistically engaging and emotionally evocative, the metaphorical center that Scheub calls "the poem in the story." Drawing on extensive fieldwork in southern Africa and decades of experience as a researcher and teacher, Scheub develops an original approach—a blend of field notes, diary entries, photographs, and texts of stories and poems—that guides readers into a new way of viewing, even experiencing, meaning in a story. Though this work is largely focused on African storytelling, its universal applications emerge when Scheub brings the work of storytellers as different as Shakespeare and Faulkner into the discussion.

Things seem to be happening very quickly. Some things were secrets. And I knew these secrets would never be appropriate, for any conversation, in any lifetime. However, it was my reality. Was anything good going to come out of this? There was too much to tell, and no one would understand. I didn't even understand-so how could anyone else? It seemed improbable that I would get what was inside, out of me. It wasn't how I was raised to discuss this negativity . . . to "air out one's dirty laundry," it just wasn't accepted. Was it all my fault? These vulgar and unprecedented events that were beginning to destroy me. I decided to block it out, keep it inside and keep moving with my life. Trying, waiting for the day I would get past it and walk through the door of the other side. The other side of all this madness. In the meantime, I had to do something with my emotions, my secrets and my feelings. They were locked up, tighter than tight. I began to write in journals. Entries that were poems and anecdotal stories of what was happening in my life. I had to become my own inspiration. I had to somehow get what was inside...out. A young girl's life filled with devastation, tragedy and self-destruction was all on its way. It was already here! Still maintaining a happy, ambitious life but harboring guilt, anger and resentment. And dealing with the world and its own evolving. This is the story of over ten years of writings, from the ages of 14-26 years. Someone leading themselves out of the dark and into the light. This was my way and this is my story. My story . . . in poetry.

Excerpt from Story-Telling Poems: Selected and Arranged for Story-Telling and Reading Aloud and for the Children's Own Reading There is an inexhaustible source of fine story-telling material to be found in narrative poetry. Fables, myths, legends, tales, roman tic or historical in treatment, are told in rhythmic form, and often in a logical manner that makes it easy to retell the plots. If the story-teller learns her story by read ing over and over again a ballad or other story-telling poem, and retells the same in simple prose paraphrase, she will find that her vocabulary is enriched, and that the rhythm of the original lends a swing and added charm to her prose rendering of the poem. Taha Muhammad Ali writes in a forceful and direct style, with disarming humor and unflinching, at times painful, honesty--the poetry's apparent simplicity and homespun truths concealing the subtle grafting of classical Arabic and colloquial forms of expression. In Israel, in the West Bank and Gaza, and in Europe, audiences have been powerfully moved by Taha Muhammad Ali's poems of political complexity and humanity. Never Mind is the poet's first collection to appear in English. Introduction by Gabriel Levin. --Ibis Editions.
