This book, based on the word of God, uses poetry as an entertaining medium for ministering. It contains thirty-three poems with accompanying biblical references and relevant commentary in the notes section. The compilation of these poems came about through a revelatory process as the author was immersed in Bible study, prayer, and meditation. The book seeks to impart important Christian values through the medium of poetry that can be used as the basis for a more substantive Bible study, especially among the youth and students. The book can also be used as a resource for Bible study purposes by pastors, youth leaders, and teachers. Finally, poetry enthusiasts may come to appreciate important biblical themes and values as they enjoy and critique the poems. Four poetic formats—sonnets, free verse, limericks, and ballads—are used to communicate significant Christian values. And as the reader is being entertained by the poems, they also become intensely exposed to some useful biblical teachings that are designed to facilitate their own spiritual growth.

This book explores the much debated relation of language and bodily experience (i.e. the 'flesh'), considering in particular how poetry functions as revelatory discourse and thus relates to the formal horizon of theological inquiry. The central thematic focus is around a 'phenomenology of the flesh' as that which connects us with the world, being the site of perception and feeling, joy and suffering, and of life itself in all its vulnerability. The voices represented in this collection reflect interdisciplinary methods of interpretation and broadly ecumenical sensibilities, focusing attention on such matters as the revelatory nature of language in general and poetic language in particular, the function of poetry in society, the question of Incarnation and its relation to language and the poetic arts, the kenosis of the Word, and human embodiment in relation to the word 'enfleshed' in poetry.

Brilliance can come from education or in combination with life experience. With my grandmother, it came from neither. Her brilliance came from gumption. Throughout her life, she chose to explore the world through words. Whether it was the newspaper, a novel, or her daily crossword, she uncovered new meanings, almost religiously, in places, things, people, and ideas. Never far from her dictionary, she was always sharpening her skills, page by page, puzzle by puzzle. Because of her shy nature, it wasnt until later in her life that we came to discover her words of poetry. Although I knew her all my life, it was through her poems and her passion for them that I came to appreciate my mimis artistry. To me, she had always been a woman of few words. To my great misfortune, just when I started to get to know the woman behind the words, did she begin to lose them. Because of her dementia, the pathway to connecting with her became rocky. Obstructed by confusion, fear, and uncertainty, she slowly faded from us. After her death, we found the full records of her poetry, some of which we now lovingly share with the world. We hope you enjoy these few words that continue to help us get to know the poet we called grandmother, mom, and mimi.

David Jewell & Ric Williams agreed on August 23, 2013, to share poems with the last word of a poem becoming the first word of the respondent's next poem. Williams had suggested such a project the previous day based on some poetry exchanges the two poets had made where correspondences were obviously riffs on themes bandied between them.Jewell had this amendment: I like that last word being used in the first line...with an amendment...to say if the last word doesn't create flow right away, to choose three words from within the poem to use wherever in the poem that follows. Fun. Creates echoes and I like having a little structure to leap from. The poems herein are edited only minimally from their original exchanges. There were too many poems to publish in this volume, so this is but a flavor. There will be breaks in the last word/first word flow as this allows the reader a glimpse into the changing moods & interests of the poets.

Not a new commentary, but a study in poetic word-order, with illustrations from the odes and epodes of Horace, intended to be used side by side with any edition of the poet. The author is a Hughes Professor of Classics in the University of Adelaide. -BPL News Bulletin - Vol. 1 [1922] * * * * * From the Introductory. THIS book is not a new commentary on part of Horace. After the work done by Gow, Page, and Wickham (to mention English commentators only) the gleanings are scarcely worth publication except in fugitive articles. What has been written hereafter is, as the title intimates, a study in poetic order with illustrations from the Odes, C. S., and Epodes of Horace. Unless the order seemed to suggest that accepted versions might be reconsidered, I have, with very rare exceptions, forborne to comment at length. Thus this book is intended to be used side by side with any edition of our poet; it is neither a réchauffé of previous editions nor, I hope, a collection of notes spoilt in the borrowing. Those who hold that almost any order may pass in poetry will read my notes with impatience or something worse. I ask them to suspend judgment and to await the cumulative effect of the evidence. The rules of the game are simple enough. I make no apologies for repeating some of them. They were first clearly stated by Professor J. P. Postgate. Attention to them, or rather to the breach of them, enhances in a surprising measure the effectiveness of Latin as a vehicle for the expression of ideas. Here are the five most important rules of normal order: (1) Adjectives, except those of number and quantity, immediately follow the noun, or, to use a brief terminology, are postpositive; (2) Genitives are postpositive; (3) Demonstrative pronouns are prepositive; (4) Adverbs immediately precede the verb i.e. are prepositive; (5) 'Subject...object...verb' is the normal order. As everyone knows, departure from these normal positions gives interest to the word abnormally placed. It may be asked why the Romance languages do not show survivals of this system. They do show survivals, but not many. One must remember that the introduction of Christianity caused neglect of the classical models at a very early date. During the Dark Ages such niceties as word-order were forgotten. But, as I have said, there are a few survivals. In Spanish, for instance, an adjective may precede the noun for emphasis; thus 'a magnificent day!' is 'un magnifico dia!' Then there is what may be called the emphasis of emotion. This can be seen in Spanish, French, and Italian. Contrast the cold classification of un escritor pobre (i.e. poor, not rich) with un pobre escritor (i.e. wretched, unfortunate, miserable). Parallels in French and Italian will be found quoted at §§ 34 and 36 of my Prolegomena and elsewhere in the notes. Those who know the Romance languages better than I do will, I doubt not, supply many more examples.

The Measured Word written by Kurt Brown and has been published by University of Georgia Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001 with Literary Criticism categories.

Though the interests of science and art frequently seem to inhabit opposite poles, The Measured Word assembles a brilliant anthology of twelve essays that illumine the historic--and newly emerging--relationships between the poetic and scientific imaginations. Assembling the writings of leading contemporary poets, essayists, and thinkers, Kurt Brown highlights ways in which poets use scientific discoveries and mathematical ideas to their artistic advantage--and offers insight on the recently apparent integration of technology and other discoveries into the postmodernist poetry. Here are meditations on the similarities and differences between the poetic and scientific imagination; on the poetic use of fractals; on hypertext; on the changing shape of poetry in the scientific age. Commentary by Czech poet and immunologist Miroslav Holub, Paul Lake, Alison Hawthorne Deming, Alice Fulton, Forrest Gander, and Stephanie Strickland, among others, presents a diverse selection of opinions. These viewpoints are complemented by many careful, innovative readings of individual poems informed by the sciences. The writings in this collection not only celebrate the advent of a new age of discovery but also identify the need for a revision of the western thinking that separates the mind and the heart--replacing division with the reciprocity of mutual communication.
