Excerpt from Poetical Works of Geoffrey Chaucer, Vol. 4: With Poems Formerly Printed With His or Attributed to Him; Edited, With a Memoir Collecting his barons for the purpose of assaulting the castle, the god discovers amongst them two strangers, false-semblant and constrained-abstinence, who are at first afraid to present themselves, but are at last admitted as liege-men at the re quest of the others, the God of Love desiring false-semblant to narrate his history. From his account of himself, it ap pears that he generally assumes the habit of a triar, and in the description he gives of the subtle arts by which he thrives, the vices usually ascribed to the Mendicants are delineated with great humour and liveliness. This episode being concluded, the God leads his barons to the assault. False-semblant and constrained-abstinence pro ceed to the outer gate, where they encounter male-bouche, whom they persuade, by means of a hypocritical sermon, to kneel down and make his confession. While he is on his knees, constrained-abstinence seizes him by the throat, and forces him to put out his tongue, which false-semblant immediately cuts off with a razor forged on the anvil of coupe-gorge. Thus securing the gate, they enter the castle, and slay the Norman soldiers, who are all lying drunk. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Poetical Works of Geoffrey Chaucer, Vol. 3 of 4: With Poems Formerly Printed With His or Attributed to Him [That this was one of Chaucer's early poems appears to be established by several circumstances; although neither the age at which it was written, nor the place to which it should be assigned in the chronology of his works, can be determined. There is no doubt that it was antecedent to The Canterbury Tales, which, at whatever period they may have been commenced, occupied the close of Chaucer's life. It certainly preceded The Legende of Gode Women, which is represented in the Prologue as having been designed to make amends for the unfavourable picture of the frailties of the sex drawn in the character of Cryseyde. Chaucer himself seems to indicate that it was one of the earliest of his productions, by mentioning it first in the list of those pieces which he tells us he had revoked in his 'retracciouns, ' alluded to in the address to the reader at the end of The Persones Tale, vol. ii. p. 350; and Lydgate, enumerating Chaucer's works, expressly refers Troylus and Cryseyde to his youth. If the conjectures suggested by the internal evidence were of any weight against this testimony, we might be justified in assuming that the poem could hardly have been the production of a very young writer. Excerpt from The Complete Poetical Works of Geoffrey Chaucer: Now First Put Into Modern English Chaucer's entire poetic works have never before been put into modern English. Parts of them, especially of the Canterbury Tales, have been retold in one place or another in both prose and verse, some of the latter by pens so great as Wordsworth's, Pope's, and Dryden's; but hitherto a more nearly adequate idea of a marvelously individual and many-sided poet could be obtained only through his original text. That such is the best way to obtain it the present editors would be the first to urge. But most readers need not be told that it can be so acquired only by dint of somewhat thorough study; even more thorough than the casual reader can realize, for yet more baffling than frankly obsolete words are the countless words and idioms which have subtly changed their meaning. And undoubtedly such study at first may form a mist between the reader and a sympathetic comprehension of the poet. The melody of his verse, too, which the modernizer is so grieved to disturb, can be heard only by the practised ear. It is believed, therefore, that the present volume will be welcome to a good number of cultivated people everywhere. The editors have striven always to paraphrase as little and to be as faithful to the original as they could; certainly never to misrepresent it. They have departed from it only to save their version from one or another of four possible stumbling-blocks: rhyme and excessive rhythm, obscurity, extreme verbosity, and excessive coarseness. Their rare omission of words or short passages for the last reason has not been indicated; in the still fewer cases where a whole episode is incurably gross or voluptuous (yet Chaucer is never merely vicious), its omission is shown by asterisks. Proper names are almost always given in their true or their familiar modern form. A few short lyrics which otherwise would have lost too much have been versified in the original metrical form.
