In a brilliant recreation of the epoch between the 1770s and the 1820s, Emma Rothschild reinterprets the ideas of the great revolutionary political economists to show us the true landscape of economic and political thought in their day, with important consequences for our own. Her work alters the readings of Adam Smith and Condorcet--and of ideas of Enlightenment--that underlie much contemporary political thought. Economic Sentiments takes up late-eighteenth-century disputes over the political economy of an enlightened, commercial society to show us how the "political" and the "economic" were intricately related to each other and to philosophical reflection. Rothschild examines theories of economic and political sentiments, and the reflection of these theories in the politics of enlightenment. A landmark in the history of economics and of political ideas, her book shows us the origins of laissez-faire economic thought and its relation to political conservatism in an unquiet world. In doing so, it casts a new light on our own times.

Excerpt from Principles of Moral and Political Economy The need of a work on this subject, not written to sustain the interests of a class, is the only reason, if one need be given, for this attempt. All the works examined on the subject treat only of "political economy" or "moral philosophy." We have these ad infinitum - economys of "supply and demand," "debt and credit," but in the main of debt. The above title is chosen for the reason that in all the works examined, the two subjects have been studiously divorced, and for the self-evident fact, that the "political economy" of the old schools is bereft all humane or moral sentiment. In a true sense no "economy" is politic that is not moral, or any moral that is not political. In many instances we have strayed so far from fundamental and just principles, we seem as a nation, to have lost moral perception and the points of the moral compass. We ask all earnest, patriotic right thinking persons to go to the sun dial of the moral and political world and then let us as citizens take our moral and political reckoning. Let us apply to ourselves, the only safe rule of human conduct, in all ages, climes and conditions of life, the rule laid down in the twelve words: "Do unto others as ye would that they should do unto you." To show that this rule is the underlying principle of our social compact and constitution and the only enduring rule of conduct that can preserve society and civilization in a dense population, is the aim in this little work. That rule is the only one that can act as a lubricant and prevent heating, at the centers of population amid the friction of multiplied clashing pressed and compressed interests. The intelligent reader of history must have observed that all types and degrees of civilization in all ages, have only endured, until a certain State of development and density of population was reached: and then the dissolute, immoral and oppressive conduct of one class resting and grinding upon another by the friction of clashing interests caused the whole fabric to ignite and burn, with civil strife and commotion to its own destruction. So it was with Chaldean, Persian, Medo Persian, Greek and Roman civilization. Christian civilization is just now going into the crucible test of dense population - that is the test of a nation's morality. The material question, with modern Christian civilization - at its centers is, not how wide shall its national boundaries be, but how full can it fill them. The era of conquest and acquisition of territory has passed, the era of filling up has come. The history of the nations of antiquity shows, that while they had room to extend their territory, they prospered after a fashion. "This is the first scholarly work to deal solely with the Adam Smith problem, namely the apparent contradiction between Adam Smith's most famous works, "The Theory of Moral Sentiments" and "The Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations". Since the 1840s scholars have puzzled over and attempted to explain the fact that these works offer two fundamentally different and contradictory concepts of human nature. In this radical new approach Do an Gocmen argues that there are, indeed, two different concepts of human nature; in "The Theory of Moral Sentiments", Smith advocates a broad synchronization of human intention and behaviour under a beneficent providence in a system of mutual sympathy, whereas "Wealth of Nations" is a critical account of the human situation of the individual and is an egoistic description of human beings in commercial society. Gocmen argues that Smith does indeed put forward two different and varied ideas, arguing that the ethical position articulated in "The Theory of Moral Sentiments" can be, and was intended by Smith to be, applied as a basis for criticising the commercial society analysed in the "Wealth of Nations". Gocmen argues that this ethical position points to the character of its ideal future replacement, that of Adam Smith's Utopia. Gocmen therefore dismisses as short-sighted and oversimple the common assumption that Adam Smith's Utopia consists merely of 'the invisible hand', the idea that markets would regulate everything if left to their own dynamics. This book challenges the traditional approach to Adam Smith and is the first contribution to the solution of a long-standing debate, making it essential reading for anyone wanting to understand the moral philosophy, political economy and utopian thought of Adam Smith."--Bloomsbury Publishing.

The invisible hand of the market is a metaphor conceived by Adam Smith to describe the self-regulating behavior of the marketplace. The exact phrase is used just three times in Smith's writings, but has come to capture his important claim that individuals' efforts to maximize their own gains in a free market benefits society, even if the ambitious have no benevolent intentions. Smith came up with the two meanings of the phrase from Richard Cantillon who developed both economic applications in his model of the isolated estate. He first introduced the concept in The Theory of Moral Sentiments, written in 1759. In this work, however, the idea of the market is not discussed, and the word "capitalism" is never used. By the time he wrote The Wealth of Nations in 1776, Smith had studied the economic models of the French Physiocrats for many years, and in this work the invisible hand is more directly linked to the concept of the market: specifically that it is competition between buyers and sellers that channels the profit motive of individuals on both sides of the transaction such that improved products are produced and at lower costs. Adam Smith (1723–1790) was a Scottish economist, philosopher and author as well as a moral philosopher, a pioneer of political economy and a key figure during the Scottish Enlightenment era. Smith is best known for two classic works: The Theory of Moral Sentiments (1759) and An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations (1776). The latter, usually abbreviated as The Wealth of Nations, is considered his magnum opus and the first modern work of economics.
