Central India comprising of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh was a playground of Political forces during the early medieval period on account of the rule of powerful dynasties like the Pratiharas, the Rastrakutas, the Paramaras, the Kalachuris, the Candellas, the Kacchapaghatas, the Yajvapalas, the Nagas of Bastar etc. Each of these dynasties played a dominant role in shaping the political history not only the region over which they ruled, but northern, eastern, western and southern India where they often carried on raids and established their supremacy. Their conquests were carried as far as Bengal and Orissa in the east, Gujarat in the west, Kashmir in the north and Karnataka in the south. Also their cultural achievements in the field of Art, Literature, Religion and Society were immense. All these were possible only on account of sound policies the rulers followed and achieved them through the thoughts of ancient Indian political thinkers. What was the nature of the political thought and organization of the ruling dynasties of Central India during the post -Harsa period, till the rise of the Muslim rule in this part of the country is the subject matter of research in this book. No work on the lines suggested hereinunder has been attempted till date. The primary source of the present study is inscriptions of the dyansties who were ruling over different parts of the region. These sources of information have further been supplemented by the contemporary literary works of the court-poets of the rulers concerned, in addition to other contemporary literary sources. Various Smrtis, Niti works and Digests have been suitably employed to supplement the findings. Numismatic sources too have been harnessed to arrive at conclusions. Interpretations provided in Modern works have been utilized wherever necessary.

The Buffalo Century is a keen exploration of satire and its role in society and politics. Written in praise of a buffalo, Vāñcheśvara Dīkṣita’s Mahiṣaśatakam is timeless in its treatment of power, and its subversion. In resurrecting eighteenth-century Tanjore for the modern reader, Kesavan Veluthat lifts the poem beyond its immediate literary context and situates it in a contemporary global political setting. Presenting a modern English translation along with the Sanskrit text, this work provides a fare that is as rich in double entendre as it is in its onomatopoeic metaphors. A literary triumph and the voice of an age, this book will be a key text for students and scholars of history, political science, sociology, literature, especially Sanskrit and comparative, and cultural studies.

Ancient To Medieval written by Noboru Karashima and has been published by Oxford University Press, USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009 with India, South categories.

South India underwent a process of tremendous social change in the period between the twelfth to fourteenth centuries. This was characterized by transformation of landholding and production systems; emergence of new jâtis; development of maritime trade, merchant guilds, and towns; and birth of new religious ideas and beliefs. Mapping this shift from ancient to medieval , this volume offers a new understanding of the emergence of medieval state and social formation in south India. Combining his fifty year experience of studying Tamil inscriptions with a nuanced historical rigour, Noboru Karashima rejects the segmentary state model as a category for understanding the Chola state. He argues that the Chola kings tried to build a centralized state apparatus taking control of the East West trade which in turn triggered widespread social change. The author examines Chinese ceramic shreds recently discovered in south India and also translates the description of the Chola state in Chinese dynastic annals to present a new picture of the south Indian state. The book also reviews debates surrounding land relations, caste, and commerce in south India and surveys the socio-political conditions leading to the establishment of the Vijayanagar rule.

The Making Of Southern Karnataka written by Malini Adiga and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006 with History categories.

Southern Karnataka emerged as a regional entity between the fourth and eleventh centuries AD. Although interest in the nature of early medieval states and their social formations has defined much historical research since the 1970s, studies have, until now, been limited to clarifying only the political-dynastic history of the region. In this path-breaking new study, Malini Adiga reveals the political, social and cultural features that characterised the region. Its distinct identity is explored by examining the processes that created this political and cultural entity: the various social strata, the nature of the socio-political structure, the developments in the field of religion, and the manner in which the early medieval state patronised and utilised the various religious cults and sects to legitimise itself. Based on an extensive analysis of the inscriptions from the region and period under study, this book also drwas on the region's literary sources to explain its characteristic social ethos. Exhaustively researched, carefully analysed and richly descriptive, this book is essential reading for all those interested in early medieval Karnataka.
