The excuse for this volume is the newly awakened interest in our country's past. It owes its origin to a course of parlor lectures which resulted from the remark of a cultured woman who entered actively into the opportunities of her New York life. I have attended, she declared, parlor classes for the study of the great men, the historical epochs, the music, the art, the literature, and even the drama of nearly every land of Europe, but remain lamentably ignorant of the history of my own country. Write a course of lectures upon the political history of the United States and I promise to form a class of women all as ill-in formed as I am, and equally anxious to learn. It was an appeal that demanded compliance, and the interest aroused by the lectures suggested a fuller treatment of the subject in a more permanent form. Excerpt from The Political History of the Province of New York This outline of the Political History of the Province of New York was originally presented to the Faculty of the School of Political Science, Columbia College. It was written in part fulfillment of the conditions necessary for the attainment of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, and having been favorably received, I am led to issue a few copies of it for two reasons. First: because I have found no connected and condensed statement of the events of constitutional importance during that period. In the smaller histories of the state these facts are generally ignored, and in the more voluminous works and collections of historical documents they are so scattered and wanting in sequence, that much time and labor are necessary to establish their relation and significance. Again: I am convinced that the important influence of the colonial constitution on the political structure of our state has been and is undervalued from want of familiarity. If this is true, then every effort - however slight - that serves to call attention to it is an act of justice to our history that needs no apology. Excerpt from Historical and Political Essays When Mr. Lecky had finished his last work, The Leaders of Public Opinion in Ireland, ' he did not intend to write another long book. His health was broken he had said most of what he wished to say. But he proposed collect ing in a volume a few Essays which he had written at different times. As concentration was to him one of the first conditions of good work, he did not often allow his attention to be diverted from the book he was writing by giving addresses or contributing articles to reviews or magazines, unless he had some special reason for doing so. The number is, therefore, small. E began revising them; and made some additions to Thoughts on istory, ' 'the Empire, ' 'the Memoir of the Fifteenth Earl of Derby, ' Queen Victoria as a Moral Force but he unfortunately did not live to complete the revision of the others. In publishing this volume I have endeavoured to carry out his intentions. Besides the Essays which he had revised, I have included all that seemed to me to possess a permanent value. Even though some of them deal with questions of the day, the philosophic spirit in which they are treated may give them more than a transitory interest, and the forcible arguments that are adduced may still have weight in the future.
