The Political Woman in Print analyses the depiction of politically active women in novels by six female authors from the margins of the democratic revolution of 1848 and the first German women's movement. Their literary depictions of society, democracy and women's rights contributed much to the development of modern feminist thought.

Women Making News written by Michelle Elizabeth Tusan and has been published by University of Illinois Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005 with Press and politics categories.

Women Making News tells two stories: first, it examines alternative print-based political cultures that women developed during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and second, it explores how British female subjects themselves forged a wide range of new political identities through the pages of "their press."Starting in the mid-nineteenth century, a rising cohort of female editors and journalists created a new genre of political journal they proclaimed to be both "for and by women," which continued until the 1930s. The development of new specialized periodicals, such as Women's Penny Paper, Votes for Women, Women's Gazette, and Shafts, fostered the proliferation of diverse political agendas aimed at re-imagining women's status in society. At the same time, the institutional infrastructure of the women's press provided new opportunities for women in nontraditional employments.Tusan's approach employs social and cultural historical analysis in the reading of popular printed texts, as well as rare and previously unpublished personal correspondence and business records from archives throughout Britain. Women Making News is the first book-length study to uncover the important relationship between print culture and the gender politics that provided a vehicle for women's mobilization in the political culture of modern Britain.Michelle Tusan is an assistant professor of British history at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.A volume in The History of Communication series, edited by Robert W. McChesney and John C. Nerone

In 1975, Marilyn Waring was elected to the New Zealand Parliament as the MP for Raglan. Aged just twenty-three, she was one of only a few female MPs who served through the turbulent years of Muldoon’s government. For nine years, Waring was at the centre of major political decisions, until her parliamentary career culminated during the debate over nuclear arms. When Waring informed Muldoon that she intended to cross the floor and vote for the opposition bill which would make New Zealand nuclear free, he called a snap election. And the government fell. . . This is an autobiographical account of Waring’s extraordinary years in parliament. She tells the story of her journey from being elected as a new National Party MP in a conservative rural seat to being publicly decried by the Prime Minister for her ‘feminist anti-nuclear stance’ that threatened to bring down his government. Her tale of life in a male-dominated and relentlessly demanding political world is both uniquely of its time and still of pressing relevance today.

Political Women, Vol. 1 by Sutherland Menzies Excerpt INTRODUCTION. In selecting the careers of certain celebrated women who have flung themselves with ardour into the vortex of politics, the author's choice has not been so much an arbitrary one as it might seem, but rather guided by instances in which the adventurous game has not been restricted to the commonplace contentions of the public platform, or the private salon, but played on the grandest scale and on the most conspicuous arena; when Peace and War, crowns and dynasties, have trembled in the balance, and even the fate of a nation has been at stake. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. Women, Politics and the Public Sphere is a socio-historical analysis of the relationship between women, politics and the public sphere. The book focuses intellectually on the legacy of eighteenth century women thinkers, writers and political philosophers in understanding the emergence of women public intellectuals in the US and UK and highlights how women public intellectuals now reflect much more social and cultural diversity. Women public intellectuals in the US examined in the book include: Samantha Power, Anne-Marie Slaughter, Elizabeth Warren, Condoleezza Rice, Susan Rice, Hillary Clinton and Sheryl Sandberg. The implications for the political representation of women in the West and globally will be considered. The book is about the fault-lines established in the eighteenth century for later developments in social and political discourse.

Although feminist women have existed throughout history, the term "New Woman" wasn't officially coined until 1894, when British novelists began to address the concept of the New Woman through discussions of female suffrage, dress reform, women's advances toward more legal rights, birth control, sexual freedom, and women working outside the home. This annotated bibliography includes original novels and articles printed from 1894 to 1944, the era most closely associated with the New Woman. It includes all period novels with a New Woman protagonist and all period articles with the New Woman as primary subject, along with several poems, cartoons, advertisements, and artworks. The bibliography also includes critical literature published worldwide from the 1960s to 2008 that examines the primary material included in the first section. Because the New Woman was the target of many derisive articles, poems, and visual works, these critical response pieces are included.
