Legislators' party switching impacts the stability of party systems and government survival in modern democracies. This dissertation starts by casting a research question: Why do some countries suffer more defectors in elections than others? To address this question, I incorporate institutionalism that emphasizes the influence of institutional factors and rational choice that specifies the strategic interactions between party leaders and legislators to construct an incomplete information game for electoral defection, and then cross-nationally, quantitatively, and empirically test the hypotheses derived from the defection game. Statistical results show that the cost-benefit ratio of legislative membership (e.g. the degree of political corruption) is linearly associated with defection and the degree of candidate-centered elections is nonlinearly associated with defection rates. Based on these findings, I establish a general theory of defection and argue that the absence of bureaucratic independence determines whether defection might frequently occur in modern democracies. Moreover, if patronage systems and electoral procedure are controlled by different political actors, legislators are more likely to defect.

Why do certain militaries brutally suppress popular demonstrations, while others support the path to political liberalization by backing mass social movements? Although social movements and media can help destabilize authoritarian governments, not all social protest is effective or culminates in the toppling of dictatorships. Frequently, the military’s response determines the outcome. In Defect or Defend, Terence Lee uses four case studies from Asia to provide insight into the military’s role during the transitional phase of regime change. Lee compares popular uprisings in the Philippines and Indonesia—both of which successfully engaged military support to bring down authoritarian rule—with protest movements in China and Burma which were violently suppressed by military forces. Lee’s theory of “high personalism” and power-sharing among the armed forces leadership provides a framework for understanding the critical transitory phases of democratization. He uses this theory to review and assess Eastern Europe’s democratization events in 1989, the Colored Revolutions of the early 2000s, and the protests and revolutions unfolding in the Middle East. This book will appeal to students and scholars of comparative politics, Asian studies, security studies, and international relations, as well as defense policymakers.

This Element elucidates ways for researchers to use unobtrusive experimental methods to elicit answers to risky, taboo, and threatening questions in dangerous social environments. The methods discussed in this Element help social scientists to encourage respondents to express their true preferences and to reduce bias, while protecting them, local survey organizations, and researchers. The Element is grounded in an original study of civilian support for the jihadi insurgency in the Russian North Caucasus in Dagestan that assesses theories about wartime attitudes toward militant groups. We argue that sticky identities, security threats, and economic dependence curb the ability of civilians to switch loyalties.
