Master's Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Geography / Earth Science - Economic Geography, grade: B, , course: MANAGEMENT, language: English, abstract: The study analyzed a mathematical model that would help to facilitate the development of the Niger Delta region in a phase by phase approach. The region has been bedeviled with the problem of underdevelopment culminating into youth restiveness, violence and militancy, poverty and environmental degradation despite the abundant oil wealth. The study utilized secondary data. A network model was drawn to practically and mathematically demonstrate the journey from under-development towards development and analyzed by applying the forward recursive equation formulated for study. The problem of under-development in the Niger-Delta is no longer a mean issue because it has transcended from national to international dimension. It is complex and hydra-headedsince it has resulted to youth restiveness and taking of arms against the government. Jobless youths are tired of failed promises to provide job opportunities and enabling environment for private businesses. More so, the activities of oil exploration and exploitation have depleted the ecosystem. Environmental degradation through theactions of oil spills aredestroyingfarm lands and rivers. In such a precarious situation in the Niger- Delta, Mere political pronouncements or jamborees cannot and will not solve this sickness from its roots. This is why a multi- dimensional approach must be applied and the government must develop the Niger-Delta area. It is against this backdrop that, the researcher is working on the possibility of developing adynamic plan for solving the problem of under-development plaguing the Niger-Delta region.

The recent escalation in the violent conflict in the Niger Delta has brought the region to the forefront of international energy and security concerns. This book analyses the causes, dynamics and politics underpinning oil-related violence in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. It focuses on the drivers of the conflict, as well as the ways the crises spawned by the political economy of oil and contradictions within Nigeria's ethnic politics have contributed to the morphing of initially poorly coordinated, largely non-violent protests into a pan-Delta insurgency. Approaching the issue from a number of perspectives, the book offers the most up-to-date and comprehensive analysis available of the varied dimensions of the conflict. Combining empirically-based and analytic chapters, it attempts to explain the causes of the escalation in violence, the various actors, levels and dynamics involved, and the policy challenges faced with regard to conflict management/resolution and the options for peace. It also examines the role of oil as a commodity of global strategic significance, addressing the relationship between oil, energy security and development in the Niger Delta.

The Niger Delta Region has in the past two decades experienced protracted violent conflicts. At the roots of these violent conflicts are the genuine quests of the people for sustainable development that is based on social justice, equity, fairness and environmental protection. Although richly endowed, the region is hopelessly poor. This paradox of poverty in the midst of plenty has been attributed to a myriad of factors ranging from Nigeria's centralized federalism, to ethno-regional domination, corruption, poor governance, and oil-related environmental degradation. Development in the Niger Delta is vital not only to the stability and prosperity of Nigeria, but also to global energy security. This book provides unique insights into the challenges of development and peace building in the Niger Delta, and insights into other resource-rich but poverty-stricken, conflict-prone regions of the world.

This vivid account of the rise of the remarkable slave and palm oil trading states in the Niger delta in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries also analyses the relation of political development to economic change. The author's field studies among the Ijo, Ibibio, and Ibo peoples have made possible an analysis of the essential processes of economic and political transformation which lay behind the oral traditions. There are also detailed and often lively accounts of the European traders. The study concentrates on the two principal Oil Rivers states which nineteenth century writers called New Calabar and Grand Bonny. For purposes of comparison the adjacent states of Brass (Nem?) and Okrika, the Andoni peoples and the Efik state known to Europeans as Old Calabar are also examined. The study ends in 1884, the year that marks the beginning of the Brithsh Protectorate government and with it the end of indigenous systems of government which characterised these Oil River States during the nineteenth century. The monarchies established in the eighteenth century by King Pepple of Bonny and King Armakiri of Kalabari and the political and economic organisations developed under their rule were coming to, or had already come to, an end, with new oligarchies developing in their place.
