The policy of the United States and, by extension, that of many oil importing countries, toward OPEC countries is in large part a function of an estimate of the factors that condition oil decisions in exporting countries. In this title, originally published in 1978, Ted Moran examines how immune OPEC can expect to be to the struggles over market shares that traditionally have beset attempts to organize natural resource cartels. Moran’s research leads him to argue that skyrocketing commitments to growth and social betterment leave little slack in national budgets and thus preclude output reductions for any extended period, or at least act as a substantial deterrent, unless such reductions come in support of an effort to raise real oil prices substantially. For any student interested in international policy making, economic development, or environmental studies, this title offers fascinating insights into the oil industry.

Oil Politics written by Francisco R. Parra and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with Petroleum industry and trade categories.

"Many international conflicts in the world today revolve around the control of oil - despite the protestations of politicians to the contrary. The unfettered availability of oil at an affordable price is basic to the stability, security and prosperity of all states - not just those in the West. Thus fundamental to any understanding of the politics of the contemporary world is an understanding of the politics and most recent history of petroleum. Francisco Parra sets out the political and economic events which, since the 1950s, have shaped the international petroleum industry and world affairs: the relationships central to continuing conflicts since 1950 between Middle Eastern governments, the big seven major oil companies and the governments of their home countries - the US and Britain; the struggle over oil prices; domination by the international companies; levels of competition and above all the control over oil resources. Parra concludes that more and far greater conflicts loom in the future, all driven by the dependence of the industrial world on the Middle East for oil, OPEC's volatile control over price, uncertainties in Russia and Central Asia and the growing hostility between "Islam and the West"."--Bloomsbury Publishing.

Though the history of hikes in petroleum prices began in 1973 when the military government of Gen. Yakubu Gowon increased the price of petrol to 9 kobo per litre from the equivalent of 8.8 kobo that had prevailed before then, the politics and economics of removal of subsidies on premium petroleum products entered into the national lexicon in 1986 when the military administration of General Ibrahim Babangida announced that due to the devaluation of the Naira, the domestic price of fuel had become unsustainable cheap and was becoming a burden on the national purse. Ever since, most regimes in the country have toyed with the idea of removing the subsidies, with organised labour and the civil society usually vehemently opposed to the idea. In late 2011 the Jonathan administration announced plans to completely remove the subsidies but gave no timeline amid threats by organised labour, students and civil society groups to stoutly resist the move. On January 1 2012, the regime announced the removal of the subsidies and subsequently reiterated that its decision on the issue was irreversible. It however announced some measures, including the provision of buses, to help cushion the impact of the move. This volume takes a critical look at the politics and economics of the pro- and anti-subsidisation lobbies. It also examines the likely economic and social impacts of the move and its implications for the poor, the overall economy and the country's democratic project. _____________________________ Jideofor Adibe has been a Guest research fellow in a number of institutions across the world including the Centre for Development Research, Copenhagen, Denmark; the Nordic Institute for African Studies, Uppsala, Sweden, the Centre for Developing Area Studies, McGill University, Montreal, Canada and the Institute for Commonwealth Studies, University of London, UK. Both the performance and the potential of Libyan Oil warranted the need for this research into the energy policies of the current regime. The author surveys the historical and geological determinants of oil development. The impact of the central government and the Libyan National Oil Company on current exploration and development is studied closely providing insight into why some foreign companies have stayed in Libya and why some others have joined them. Pricing policies and efforts at furthering downstream integration, in Libya and in Europe, are dealt with in detail. The effect of national development plans on oil policy and the consequences of continued US and UN sanctions are both investigated thoroughly.
